With the S6 DSFL draft happening tonight, NSFL general managers are for the first time placed in a position where they are seeing the next generation of quarterbacks in front of them. For the past five seasons, perennial all-stars such as Mike Boss of the Orange County Otters, King Bronko of the Arizona Outlaws, Logan Noble of the New Orleans Second Line, Mat Akselsen of the Yellowknife Wraiths and Chris Orosz of the San Jose Sabercats have dominated the top of the quarterback stats lists as part of the original cast of quarterbacks. These five players are the only remaining quarterbacks from the inaugural draft class to hold starting roles on professional teams while in recent years younger players such as Clifford Rove (Philadelphia), and Nicholas Pierno (Colorado) have begun to see increased playtime. With every NSFL team currently boasting a strong starting quarterback, young quarterbacks joining are finding themselves with less and less options as to where they can play out their careers. This issue has been presented multiple times by different users around the boards even in just the short time I've been around. Today I thought I would take a look at how some of the S6 and S7 NSFL draftee quarterbacks can expect to find their careers panning out and how long these top quarterbacks are likely to last in their roles.

We will start by looking over the current top quarterbacks around the league and how they got to where they are today by looking back at their previous stats from other seasons and figure out if they are "in their prime" or if the decline of regression is going to start affecting them soon, opening up roster holes for younger players. Without further ado, onto the Baltimore Hawks.

BAL - Avon Blocksdale (S2) - BAL

The first player we examine is Avon Blocksdale of the Baltimore Hawks. This player didn't start his career as a quarterback but rather was a draftee in S2 as an offensive lineman. The original quarterback of the Baltimore Hawks, Scrub Kyubee, has since moved positions to quarterback while Blocksdale has really run with his new role as the offensive helm man for the Hawks. Blocksdale made the position switch in S4, and had a rough start to his career as a quarterback, setting the Hawks record for most pass interceptions with 19. He would recover in S5, setting the remaining quarterback records with the Baltimore Hawks posting nearly 5000 yards in a single season and throwing 42 touchdowns with a passer rating of 98.5 and a competition percentage of 60.3%. This player's amazing transition to quarterback is one that I find troubling. In my opinion, I don't think it should be so easy for a player to transition from one position to another and find this much success, especially for a positional leap as big as the one form offensive lineman to quarterback.

Blocksdale is surrounded by dynamic wide out options such as Trey Willie and Alexandre Leclair while also possessing some great rushing in Owen Taylor. The Hawks have one of the strongest offensive teams and Blocksdale is a key part of that offensive powerhouse. It is unlikely that a roster spot will open up in Baltimore in the near future considering just how potent Blocksdale was in his first season as an elite quarterback and given his league role as the DSFL commissioner which should keep him active. Moving onto the next team.

COL - Nicholas Pierno (S3) - COL

Nicholas Pierno is the newest quarterback to the NSFL elite scene. Taking over for Logan Noble in S3, Pierno has struggled in his career so far, but being part of a rebuilding Yeti team is likely the reason for that. The Yeti added two incredible receiving options this season's draft between Dwayne Aaron and Grey Slax who will take over for the Yeti's current top two of J.J Reigns and Kendrick Hendrix. As S5 TE draftee Carlito Crush comes into his own and inaugural star running back Boss Tweed continues to be the number running back in the league this team has an offense on the come up but will need to rely on Pierno heavily to become a more dynamic passer. While he has failed to impress so far in his career, I have faith that with more offensive options he should be able to thrive in the new climate.

Pierno's biggest issue so far has been his development in terms of TPE. While he is active around the boards on twitter, his TPE numbers just don't stack up compared to the competition of other top quarterbacks. Should he find a way to boost his numbers he will be more heavily considered to have his role on lock, but with where is sitting right now he might need to watch out for a young up and coming quarterback to overtake him and find their way onto the Yeti roster.

PHI - Clifford Rove (S3) - PHI

Clifford Rove is a player who has had a ton of hype surrounding him in the past few seasons but as the Liberty failed to qualify for the playoffs this season attention is being drawn elsewhere. Rove was a quarterback who had an enormous amount of potential entering his first season with a young and potent Liberty offense made up of receiver options Fox North and Josh Garden but has failed to perform the way critics would have liked to see. Now with the rumour mills talking of an older and more talented player position switching to take over the quarterback role from Rove as he falls into tumultuous inactivity, Rove may be delegated to a backup role in Philadelphia.

In terms of who will be replacing Rove, I have heard mention of a defensive back taking his role, which I assume either means Tyler Oles or Kevin Cushing as they are the two most talented players on this team with around 700-750 TPE each. Should either of these players position switch into quarterback this will leave Philadelphia with no foreseeable roster hole at quarterback for a number of seasons into the future.

YKW - Mat Akselsen (S1) - YKW

I'm not entirely sure what it is about offensive lineman finding their way onto teams as quarterbacks, but Akselsen became a quarterback in S3 for the Wraiths after taking over from Chris Orosz who was either traded or signed to San Jose. Akselsen has had an incredible start to his career as a quarterback, currently the holder of all the passer records but two for the Wraiths. This season Akselsen set new and greater goals for himself, absolutely dominating in all regards with one of the best statistical seasons by a Wraiths quarterback ever. With 5133 yards, 41 TD's and a passer rating of 93.5, Akselsen looks to hold onto his role as a starting quarterback for a long time.

Akselsen's league jobs as simmer and general manager of Yellowknife will keep him completely invested in the league meaning it is very unlikely we will see him drop off for personal reasons or because of lost interest. With his one position switch already made I don't see him leaving the role of quarterback, and with passing options like Bailey Cooke and Franklin Harris Jr. as well as a very talented running back in Eric Kennedy, it is unlikely he ever runs out of options on the field.

ARI - King Bronko (S1) - ARI

Bronko is the spearhead for a very talented Arizona offense that consists of the likes of Reg Mackworthy, C.A Chess, Budda Browning and Charlie Law. The team is jam packed with targets and Bronko is widely regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Bronko took over for Vincent Draxel following S1 and has run with the role. This season has some highs and lows for Bronko, for while he posted new records in multiple statistical areas in positive ways, he also set a new record for passed interceptions. Because this seen across the boards in the NSFL it is leading me to the conclusion that many teams likely have started to favor the passing game over running.

Bronko hit an even 5000 yards this season, and looks to hold onto his starting quarterback role but may be under threat as he isn't nearly on par with the top quarterbacks in TPE. Bronko's numbers aren't that much higher than that of Clifford Rove who is two seasons of production behind this veteran quarterback so if Bronko want's to hold onto his role with the Outlaws he will need to start to putting in more of the extra time after practice. Bronko as a three time GM of the Year is a now a member of the Head Office so his general activity shouldn't be an issue, but is simply more of a concern in terms of his play will be able to keep up in the quickly changing offensive game of the NSFL.

NOLA - Logan Noble (S1) - NOLA

This troubled player started his career in a Colorado Yeti jersey back in S1 and still holds the majority of their passer records due to Pierno's low numbers in passing. His trade to Las Vegas and recent inactivity is a negative mark on the Second Line who are in need of a talented quarterback now more than ever as they look to finally move into playoff territory. Noble is probably the most obvious option for a player who is likely to lose their role as the number one quarterback on a team but should hold onto the role for a season or two yet.

The Second Line have a couple of key receiving options Dustin Evans being the most obvious but Fresh Booter and Antonio Legion contributing secondary stats for the team. With Ardie Savea returning to the scene and Joseph Atkins growing into his role as a secondary target the team is in good hands in terms of offense but it will most likely be a few seasons before they are really able to compete with the best of the defenses across the league.

OCO - Mike Boss (S1) - OCO

This player is the one that seems the most untouchable out of any quarterback on the list. Boss is above and beyond the number one quarterback in this league by far and doesn't show any signs of slowing down any time soon. As the Orange County Otters continue to prove their league wide dominance and look for their third straight championship, Boss comfortably sits in his role as the starting quarterback. His stats have only gotten better and better as he has continue to play. With incredible receivers like Bradley Westfield and Robert Phelps both coming from the S1 draft class, this team is veteran loaded and will stay strong for years to come but once they lose the trio will likely see a major drop.

While I don't really see Orange County needing a quarterback anytime soon, with regression hitting their top players in the near future they will need to start inspecting future options and grooming a quarterback to take over for Boss once his time eventually does run out. Who knows though, maybe Boss will be the Brady of the league stay completely dominant for what seems like the rest of time.

SJS - Chris Orosz (S1) - SJS

This team has had an odd history of quarterbacks, shuffling through a couple before finally landing on their man with Chris Orosz in S4 (?). Orosz started his career with the Yellowknife Wraiths before moving to the complete opposite side of the North Pole to the sunny state of California. Last season Orosz set new records for the Sabercats in both completion percentage (60.6%) and yards (4452) among a few other things. The Sabercats focus heavily on receivers Mayran Jackson and Shane Weston for their offensive firepower but also put a lot of pressure on running backs such as Darren Smallwood and Denzel Diaz.

Orosz is in a similar situation to Bronko where he doesn't seem totally untouchable but is comfortably enough placed into his starting role that unless an upcoming quarterback swoops in he will be able to hold onto it for a quite a few seasons yet. While he has seemingly hit a wall in his progression and doesn't appear to be getting to incredibly better, he should still progress into an elite quarterback and remain San Jose's number one into the late first decade of the NSFL.

With the veterans out of the way we can now look into a few of the young and upcoming players who may look to take roster spots in the near future.

BAL - Austin Roenick (S6) - BAL

Austin Roenick is one of the newest quarterbacks to the NSFL scene, joining the Baltimore Hawks not even a week ago. This young player started his career with the Portland Pythons of the DSFL and will probably not make the jump directly to the pros in his first season but will rather fall back to the minors for another season as a top quarterback with the Pythons. Should this happen he will be surrounded by strong options at receiver and will watch at least one young player join the Pythons roster who he can mentor. Unless he is traded or switches positions Roenick will remain down in the minors for quite a few seasons as Blocksdale continues to grow into his role as the star quarterback in Baltimore.

ARI - Arbin Asipi Jr. (S6) - ARI

Asipi returns to Arizona with his second player and this time as a quarterback. While the Outlaws aren't particularly in need of a new quarterback seeing as Bronko is still decently strong, adding Asipi to the mix and grooming him to take over for Bronko in a few seasons is a good plan. Similar to Roenick, Asipi will likely return to the minors next season to play for the Luchadores next season, leaving only one DSFL team (the Marshals) without a quarterback with the recent announcement of S3 prospect Mark Strike returning to the starting role Kansas City.

Other than these two players, we have a few strong quarterback prospects in the upcoming DSFL draft who are looking to make their mark in the league and hopefully find their way quickly onto NSFL rosters in the future.

Sam Penner (S7)

Penner (meeeee) might be the player with the most hype surrounding him heading into the DSFL draft tonight. Looking to stay multiple seasons in the DSFL, Penner is likely to not be disappointing as the NSFL has essentially no roster holes heading into the next few years. Penner could find himself mentoring a number of new players and is highly interested in finding his way onto the roster of the only DSFL team currently missing a starting quarterback of the San Antonio Marshals. Holding two first round picks, there is a high chance, but with other strong quarterbacks available who knows.

Bubba Beau-Boucher (S7)

Currently the main competition for Sam Penner in the upcoming draft is Beau-Boucher who was his rival in the senior bowl last week, pitting Pacific vs. Atlantic. Boucher has slightly more time in the league and has earned a small amount of more training points than has competition but may fall behind in the long run. Both players are gunning for a starting role in the DSFL this season, but competition is stiff and it's anyone's to win.

Ryan Applehort (S7)

Applehort has come out of no where and is likely to be a huge competitor against the more experienced Penner and Boucher. This player has a history of success and is the most likely to take over for Nicholas Pierno in Colorado where he is tied to by his role on the team but in the end could make his way onto any roster. Look for him to have the shortest DSFL tenure of any quarterback in this class.

Cole McCoy (S7)

McCoy is the biggest wildcard in the class at this point, being a fairly active player. Not much has been of him yet, but he has the potential to be a very talented player on any DSFL team and will be right up there in terms of competition with the above listed quarterbacks in what will be a very tough contest for the very limited starting roles in the DSFL.

Great article! I'm sure you'll deservedly be picked high, and if you need to spend a few seasons in the DSFL before getting your shot in the NSFL, that just means you'll get to set all the records! Wink

I joined right before the draft so I didn't play a season of DSFL ball like Rove did which is a big part of why my TPE is low. 'Preciate the love, though, def on the come up! #ComebackSZN

Which is why there will never be another QB drafted again. When your QB is done, you can just switch another player to their position.

None of the DSFL quarterbacks will ever play quarterback in the NSFL, though.
