Yeti had a better point differential, and according to NFL rules (and what we were told by the developers) should have made the playoffs.  However, apparently the sim uses Points For as the next tie-breaker after division record so Wraiths got in because they scored more points.

That still means Wraiths would have been the #2 team instead of Hawks.

No, because the Hawks had a better division record so it didn't come down to Points For

I think he means if there were no divisions.

If there were no divisions, division record wouldn't matter, and the Hawks would have completely missed the playoffs because they had the lowest point differential between them, Wraiths, Yeti, and Otters

EDIT: points for I mean, not point differential. No idea how the sim would have handled the Hawks and Yeti having the same PF

within the nfl season, not every opponent plays each other, so division records are a nessecity to ensure the best of each group makes it to the playoffs, and while true that there is still some issues in the NFL, we've now seen back to back seasons where the overall better teams get snubbed because of what would otherwise be resolved in a division-less league.

We have to have divisions in the sim.
