Brad Pennington's closest call in life probably came when he was in his college days at Syracuse University. You see, during the winter it gets extremely cold up there as the snow arrives and the weather starts to get pretty bad later in the year. Brad went to a bar with a few friends at some local place near campus before they'd head back to their dorms, but one thing led to another and things got pretty rowdy. The bartender asked Brad and company to leave, and of course they complied. The gang started to head out down the street but a few of the guys from inside the bar decided to escalate things by chasing the group down. Punches and kicks were exchanged, although no one came after Brad. The weather came into play here since this was during a particularly heavy storm and either the hail or one of the guys from the bar could've seriously hurt Brad. No one got seriously hurt despite the cops being called, and the instigators of the fight were arrested.

Howard Miller was nearly shot in a robbery while in college. He was doing a beer run for a fraternity party while at Northern Illinois when a gunman entered the liquor store, demanding cash from the register and as many expensive bottles of spirits as would fit into the backpack he’d brought with him. After making his demands, the gunman scanned the store for customers and waved his gun toward any he saw – including Miller – stating that he’d kill anyone who tried to get in his way.

The staff member working behind the register complied with the demands after some initial hesitation, and Miller took the opportunity while the gunman was stuffing cash into his backpack to edge closer to the register. Just as he was near enough to make a move to grab the assailant, he caught sight of Miller out of the corner of his eye and turned and pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed. The moment of confusion allowed Miller and the staff member to apprehend the man, though Miller knows how close he came to death over what was a petty (though armed) robbery.
