Sit down interview

7) The New Orleans Second Line are the team to beat next season. They will be winning the Ultimus, no doubt. The Second Line will see Bona’beri Jones come up to the NSFL. Jones tore up the DSFL thanks to his incredible speed. He was the fastest guy in the league and would outpace the secondary almost each and every time. People around the league may not be on the up and up about Second Line happenings since they were sluggish in the past season. However, management is solid and carrying out a plan for the Second Line. Draft picks, signings, moves; all these will occur over the next few seasons, perhaps this off-season, and contribute to the Second Line heading back to the playoffs. There are a lot of rumblings around the league about what to do with certain holes in the Second Line lineup. Management will fill these spots with competitive offers. This will make them fight for a playoff spot and bump one of the past-seasons playoff team out. Next, the Second Line are going to show up in the post-season. Young rookie Bona’beri Jones will go deep and help the Second Line pull out some clutch victories.

11) Sit-down with a star
Written: Interview a player from a team that is not your own that is in the playoffs. You must ask them four questions and at least three must relate to the league in some way. YOU MUST POST THE QUESTIONS AND THEIR ANSWERS FOR CREDIT.

Interview with Pythons legend Bona'beri Jones @toivo

1. You won a championship with the Pythons this season, broke the single season TD record, and are the front runner to win the DSFL Wide Receiver of the year. How hard have you been partying this weekend?
The horses in the back! Been celebrating hard after the championship. I’ve been in constant talks with New Orleans, they’re exited about what I did this season, so that’s great. Looking forward to the future seasons.

2. After sitting two years in the DSFL after being drafted by the Second Line, do you think its safe to say that this season proved you're ready for the big time?
Absolutely. I was in talks with New Orleans all off-season. They allowed me to go back to Portland to accomplish what I wanted, a DSFL championship. I appreciate that a lot, and I have a lot to prove for New Orleans.

3. Despite being a force to be reckoned with in the regular season, it seemed like you fell a bit silent in the playoffs, is there any reason for this?
You want your best games to happen when it counts, but sometimes life doesn’t happen that way. Nonetheless, I’m grateful for winning the championship. I’m hype, boi.

4. Any proof to the rumors that Ben and Jerrys is making a new flavor of ice cream called Bona'Berry Blast?
Let’s just say it's delicious.

16) Robbed
Written: Write about why your team was robbed from making the Playoffs, how did the sim screw you and why were you more deserving:

Alright, so let me get into this especially considering that I am the co-gm of the Palm Beach Solar Bears. There are a number of reasons as to why the Solar Bears didn’t make the playoffs. Some of those reasons were our own doing from the management end of things, some of the reasons were completely out of our control. For instance, being placed in a division with San Antonio and Tijuana was a damn travesty. I know and understand that’s how the divisions were already set up, but holy shit did Norfolk end up in the easier division despite Portland’s success in the playoffs. Tough to get into the playoffs when you’re up against two powerhouses within the division. The second thing that screwed us in terms of making the playoffs was that our game plan was not set properly within the sim for the first week leading to us passing the ball more than we had planned for which led to interceptions which led to us losing games that we were otherwise competitive in. Really, those are the things that I can think of that were out of our control, outside of that we should have done a better job on our end and putting ourselves in a better spot to be competitive right away.

15) Unsung Hero
Written: Who was the unsung hero of the playoffs, convince us.

It’s not too often that kickers get a lot of love in this sport. You really only talk about them when the play like miserable pieces of shit, but that ends today because my unsung hero of the ultimini playoffs is Dasistwirklichseinnachname from the Portland Pythons. In terms of punting, he didn’t really do anything special. He was outclassed in terms of average yards per punt, but that’s obviously not why I decided to go with him. I decided that he was the unsung hero of the playoffs due to his performance in the conference championships. Dasistwirklichseinnachname was directly responsible for ten of the Pythons sixteen points in that game and he kicked what would turn out to be the game winning field goal that would ultimately send the Pythons to championship game where they would prevail as the champions. He was no slouch in the championship round either as he went two for two in field goals and knocked through all four of his extra points. He was a pivotal member of the squad for the Pythons and I don’t think they make it by the Seawolves without his performance. Could I have picked a running back, wide receiver, or even defender to fill this position? Yeah, but kicker is where it was at this season.

14) Going to Disneyland!
Written: Who was the Ultimus or Ultimini MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland, or describe how they celebrated.

Despite the fact that he threw three interceptions in the championship game, it’s tough to not say that Franklin Armstrong didn’t put the team on his back and carry the Portland Pythons to the ultimini championship. Even with the three aforementioned interceptions, throwing for almost two hundred and fifty yards and three touchdowns is definitely enough to win you MVP. So what is Armstrong going to do now? What MVPs always do in this situation and get their ass on down to Disneyworld. There are so many things to do at Disneyworld it was tough for Armstrong to decide what to do. Obviously he had to get some famous food on main street in the magic kingdom including corndogs and some ice cream. Then he decided to ride space mountain at least 20 times in a row. Each time the ride came to a start the ride operator would start ushering him off the ride where he would announce “excuse me, but do you know who the fuck I am” and the pull the safety bar right back on down. Mickey mouse came out and said, “that’s fucking Franklin Armstrong and he does whatever the fuck he wants”. Seems like it was a pretty good trip for the rookie QB.

13) That Magic Moment
Writen: Pick one moment from a playoff game and describe what made it so amazing to watch.

There are only a few moments that truly define a playoff game and in the conference championship between the San Antonio Marshals and the Tijuana Luchadores, there was one moment that put the nail in the coffin and solidified the end to an upset of the ages. There was still a lot of time left to play at this point in the game, but you know that there was just no coming back from a moment like this. So the score was twenty to fourteen with the Luchadores surprisingly in the lead, but you could tell that the Marshals were hungry and pushing as the second half of the game charged on. The Marshals had just scored a touchdown and the Luchadores were pinned deep in their own territory after the ensuing kickoff. But what happened at that moment changed the entire momentum of the game. Havran handed the ball off to Forrest Gump and Gump ran… boy did he run. He broke tackles, he juked to the left, juked to the right… there may have even been a little baby stiff arm in there somewhere, but ultimately that man carried the ball ninety six yards into the endzone to give the Luchadores a two score lead that they would keep and upset the heavy favorites in the San Antonio Marshals. If that isn’t magic, I don’t know what is.

1) Playoff Predictions, Reviews:
Written: Give a short write up of one or multiple playoff matches. If completed before the airing of the sims have predictions, after if it is a review the game.
Graphic: Make a graphic displaying the match ups in the playoffs. If completed before sim, predict scores and show stats, if after, give a summary of game showing stats and top performers.

This years playoff results are an anomaly like that of which has never been seen before in the NSFL. Every home team in the playoffs lost. The championship game excluded. Home teams are usually heavily favored in the playoffs. So much so that it has only happened a few times. But congrats to the Philadelphia Liberty and San Jose Sabercats in accomplishing that feat. The Orange County Otters and the Baltimore Hawks showed you up in the regular season but you put up the points when it matter the most. That allowed you a spot in the Ultimus Championship game. The Liberty really showed off their offensive power in the first game and the Hawks tried as much as they could to keep up. They just were unable to do so. The Liberty won that high scoring game 31 to 28. The next game was the Sabercats vs the Otters. The Otters have been dominant in the NSFL since the beginning. But this year the Sabercats decided that they were going to be the top dogs. The Otters trailed by one score at the end of the game and there was just no way that was going to happen against the stout Sabercats defense.

3) All about the QBs
Written: Write 200 words on one of the QB matchups in this year's playoffs. What are you most excited to see (Or excited to have seen), who will play better (Or who played better), etc.
Graphic: Create a graphic on a QB matchup, (Pictures with side-by-side statistics).

In the Ultimus game there were two younger QB’s in Adriana Falconi who plays for the Philadelphia Liberty and Joliet Christ who plays for the San Jose Sabercats. On paper the stats didn’t look great or prolific by either QB. They looked… good enough. However when you look at Sabercats QB Joliet Christ you will see that they didn’t punt one time! That to means that Christ was able to manage the game perfectly aside from the 1 interception he threw. When the offense walked onto the field they made the most of every opportunity by scoring at least 3. On the Liberty side they were able to put up some big yardage plays but eventually the drives would stall and they would have to give the ball back to the Sabercats. So unless they were able to put up numbers like they did in the playoff game against the Hawks, they were destined to lose. No one can really blame the QB in Philadelphia though as the running game was anemic at best. Fast Boija ran 10 and was only able to gain 29 yards. The Sabercats basically made sure he couldn’t run and dared Falconi to throw and new the mistakes would happen and eventually break down the offense. They were right.

5) Spotlight on Youth - Only task that is specifically for the NSFL and not DSFL
Written: Write 200 words on one of the players in this year's Ultimus Week that are Season 12 or newer and spotlight on how they can affect this year's Ultimus. (Or have affected)
Graphics: Create a graphic of a Season 12 or newer player with a statistical breakdown on their season.

This years spotlight is on Fast Boija of the Philadelphia Liberty. He was an incredible running back for the San Antonio Marshal’s in the DSFL before being drafted by the Liberty. The Liberty was looking for a fresh, talented back after the team had become sour with league leading rusher Marquise Brown. Brown was looking for that ultimus trophy and probably some money as well and sought another team. That team was the Baltimore Hawks, who ultimately fell to the Liberty in the playoffs. Brown was the player they needed in the Ultimus, not Boija. But Boija is young and very very talented. There will be a time that he will overtake Brown as the best rusher in the NSFL but this year was not that year. Boija ranked 7th in rushing overall compiling less than half of Brown’s numbers. Boija will definitely turn into an amazing player if all the records he shattered in the DSFL translates to a career in the NSFL. He currently holds the most yards in a season in the DSFL and I dont think that will change hands anytime soon. It is just going to be a learning curve in the NSFL for Boija as everyone is so much fast and stronger. Time to hit up the weight room and maybe add some more muscle mass.

7) Next year
Written: If your team has been eliminated, why will next year, or the year after that, be the year that your team is going to win the Ultimus or Ultimini.
Graphics: Create a statistical summary of what improvements your team has made from the previous year or why your team was better than their record.

So the Yeti were eliminated from playoff contention pretty early in the season due to numerous departures of key players in key positions. They started off too slowly and the management decided it was time to start over. Howard Miller announced his retirement and was traded from the team to the Baltimore Hawks. He went from Primary receiver to maybe 3rd or 4th string. Not the ideal place to go but he was hopeful for a championship run which ultimately was taken away in the first round of the playoffs. Also announcing his retirement was the QB of the Mycycle McCormick. McCormick stayed and finished out the season and will also play next season in hope of helping the Yeti through their tough transition period but the team will now have to find his replacement sooner than later. So this is more of the year after that or the year after type of write up. The Yeti will have to make huge key additions in the locker room if they want to stay competitive with the other team in the division who are always making moves to get better as well. Looking like seasons 18 or 19 at this point. But if the can create some sort of consistency and not a revolving door at positions of great importance, they will be all set for years to come.

(S14) Ultimus Week! - MaxGnarland - 04-28-2019

Next year: The Palm Beach Solar Bears, or whatever the team will be after the re branding, will win the Ultimini. The team is run by extremely competent GMs who inspire their players to stay active and pick well. They will most likely have multiple send downs next year who will be ahead of the curve compared to everyone else. All the other teams besides Norfolk will most likely stay around the same strength as they will have many players playing on their NSFL teams due to their high TPE levels. Norfolk will get stronger compared to this last year because they will have another draft to fill out their roster that was spare due to only having one draft to build a whole team as well as keeping send downs. The Solar Bears' quarterback will also be significantly better this next year having another season under his belt to earn TPE. Since the offense was the weakness of the Solar Bears this last season and the quarterback position having such a high TPE requirement to be efficient. The defense will most likely retain some of its talent as this draft class has a surplus of defensive talent that NSFL teams may not need on day 1.

Robbed: The Palm Beach Solar Bears were robbed this year of making the playoffs. Our quarterback Apollo Lange is a running quarterback. The simmer, no offense to him, didn't realize this and didn't check the "running quarterback" box in the sim that makes it so that the quarterback is more likely to run. Because of this the Solar Bears had multiple games early on where they threw upwards of 3 interceptions, sometimes even 5! Apollo Lange's attributes are much more suited for running than high volume passing and because the sim did not allow him to run as much as he should have he was forced into a role that he was not meant for. Many of these high interception games were still close because of the defense. Had Lange been able to run more the offense would have been much more efficient and would not have turned the ball over nearly as much. It would not be a stretch to say that Palm Beach would have won most of those games adding 3 or 4 wins for them. It also has a bigger impact on team moral. Had the Solar Bears won those games, we may have had less inactives. Having less would have improved the team overall and put them in a better spot to contend and even make the playoffs in their first year as a human team.

PLAYOFF REVIEWS

Orange County, CA-- The Orange County Otters came up short this season in their bid for repeating as Ultimus Champions. Despite the fact that they had an impressive 11-3 regular season, the Otters were unable to put down the eventual champion San Jose Saber Cats, losing by a score of 24-17. The Otters offense was unable to get in any type of rhythm, as San Jose’s defense proved to be way too much for them to handle. The Otters passing offense mustered a pathetic 245 yards on 0 touchdowns and 2 costly interceptions. The Orange County faithful was hoping for a performance closer to the Mike Boss era, but unfortunately, Showbiz looked more like Boss in his Season One days. Nonetheless, the Otters powerful running game kept things close, but special teams was the difference maker. San Jose had 3 field goals and a safety against Showbiz, and if they were to come up short in a couple of those situations, the Otters would’ve been able to come out on top. San Jose had 8 sacks compared to the Otters 3, and they set the tone for the match-up and bullied the Otters into submission. A horrible display by the Otters, as they were essentially steam-rolled on their way to a defeat.

ALL ABOUT THE QBS

San Jose, CA-- It was magical to see Christ outperform Showbiz in their NSFC Title Game matchup. While Christ did not do anything that really jumped off of the screen as a huge impact for his team, he also did not do anything that cost the Saber Cats, either. He played a smart game and was able to utilize a lot of his weapons and make sure that his team would come out victorious and have their trip to the Ultimus cemented. Christ only had a QB Rating of 63, but it was enough to out-do Showbiz who had a horrible rating of 57.4. Christ came up empty in the touchdown category, but that’s okay, so did Showbiz so that is a wash. Showbiz had more yards, more yards per attempt, and also had double the amount of interceptions thrown than Christ. Chris was also a contributor on the ground for his team, using his legs to extend plays. Showbiz, as we saw, is what I call a gargoyle QB—a statute that was once effective but now is probably destroyed, and destroyed he was. Christ had 43 rushing yards, and broke out for a long of 21 making the Otters respect his wide range of skill.

NEXT YEAR

Orange County, CA-- Next year will hopefully be better for the Otters, and there is optimism that they can return to what it means to be an Otter and win themselves an Ultimus. It will be difficult as expansion looms, but there should be no excuses for a franchise like Orange County. They had a tremendous regular season, but the defense of San Jose was too much in the playoffs. Hopefully next year Orange County has a better game plan to take care of a tough defense by actually using their offensive strengths by perhaps throwing the ball successfully. Perhaps the offense could include young superstar tight end Johnny Blaze in next season’s playoffs, since he was a complete afterthought this year versus San Jose, and the Otters ended up paying the ultimate price and falling short of the Ultimus appearance they longed for. Next year, with this knowledge, the Otters will use Blaze in an increased role in the offense and actually play the matchups to their advantage to be successful from beginning to end next season. If they fail to do this, you could expect more of the same disappointment in Orange County. No Otters fans want to think of a future of failure, but with the way things are going, it is a serious possibility if the ship is not set right.

UNSUNG HERO
Orange County, CA—The unsung hero of this postseason is undoubtedly the offensive coaching staff of the Orange County Otters. These guys did the entire league a favor when they arrived in the conference championship game with what could possibly be one of the worst game plans of all time, and thus allowing the Saber Cats to get the victory and eventually become the Ultimus Champions. The heroic acts of the offensive coaching staff of the Otters is expected to be recognized next season at a San Jose Saber Cats Championship banquet, as their Season 14 Championship victory would not have been possible without their help. San Jose fans are hoping for more of the same this season, but the Otters offensive coaches have gone silent on the subject and have claimed that it is purely a coincidence that they will all be together in San Jose on the evening of the banquet. Rumors also are flying that the Otters coaches got bouquets of fruits and flowers from Baltimore, Colorado, and Yellowknife as they attributed the Saber Cats victory to their horrible decision making. Another story of New Orleans sending a care package to the Otters coaching staff was a complete misunderstanding, as the package caused the Otters coaching staff to evacuate their building and drew the attention of law enforcement. To the surprise of nobody, the coaches returned to find their offices ransacked and all of their items stolen; cementing their legacy of negligence.

Alright so the 9-5 teams both ended up playing eachother in the Ultimus, how many of you fools could've guessed this? Absolutely definetly not me that's for sure. Anyway the San Jose SaberCats finally did it, they defeated the Philadelphia Liberty 36-24 in a feast of explosive offense. Both teams absolutely struggled in the first quarter only able to put up 6 points between them. But the second period is where it exploded, with both teams putting up two touchdowns a piece except the foolish SaberCats cocked up their extra point attempt and went in at the break down by just a single point. The third quarter

The scoring slowed down for the Liberty, securing just a single touchdown in the fourth quarter while San Jose added that and a field goal to make it an easy run in for them down the stretch to secure their first ever Ultimus title in franchise history. Not the easiest way to do it but they clutched it down the line thanks to Christ going 232 yards, 18/28 with 2 touchdowns along with Orosz rushing 74 from 13 carries and another touchdown. In the end they finally did it, and gee whiz what a way to do it.

7) Next year
Written: If your team has been eliminated, why will next year, or the year after that, be the year that your team is going to win the Ultimus or Ultimini.

While I'm not on any DSFL team, well technically I am still on the Kansas City Coyotes until the S15 DSFL Draft rolls around and I find myself uprooted, in a new state on a new DSFL team. It's gonna be pretty tough to speak about why that team will win next season because I don't know what team that is.

Instead I'm gonna speak about a team I do know well, that is of course the Yellowknife Wraiths who I spent my entire career with during my Lavelle Sr. run. I believe that from my insider knowledge of the roster and the war room that Yellowknife are making a big push to win it all in S15, they're making money moves alright. If not for S15, then for sure S16. Yellowknife historically has drafted guys who fit into the existing LR culture, of course that's never a static but rather always dynamic and consistently in transition. Matching the users to the LR opposed to just players to TPE is how you win championships in the NSFL. I should know, after all I won atleast uhh 1 whole championship in my 13 seasons with Yellowknife in the NSFL. Hey! My advice still counts... right?

9) Rivalries
Written: Write about another team and why they are overrated and why you want them to lose.
Graphic: Show a statistical representation of why said team is overrated.

Why did I want the San Jose SaberCats to lose? Well I don't actually but I've gotta fill my 200 word quotas. San Jose SaberLols have given us a feast of meme-able moments, like that time they finally made the playoffs for the first time in their awful history, pretty sure they had like 11 or 12 wins, best regular season record. But then they choked in the playoffs and went back to full meme.

I think San Jose finally got their shit together last season and there were all sorts of boasts and claims that it was there year, only to choke yet another playoff series away. But I can't really say that I wanted them to lose, really I wanted Orange County to lose so that San Jose could finally get over their boogeyman which was the playoffs and by extension the Ultimus. Now that they've got it now in their grasp, one would hope San Jose would be able to keep the momentum going and challenge for the championship for the next 2-3 seasons.

Orange County are overrated and I wanted them to lose because spec is a very mean guy and all his wins are by pure luck, he is a bum.

15) Unsung Hero
Written: Who was the unsung hero of the playoffs, convince us.
Graphic: Show is player and their statistical reasoning for being the unsung hero.

Now you may say to yourself, how on earth could Christ be the unsung hero of the playoffs when he was literally on the Ultimus winning team playing at the most popular position in the league, in the sport for the matter. While he was also a candidate for the regular season MVP award and the offensive player of the year title, well I'll explain to you exactly how.

I spent the majority of this season doing real life stuff and trying to get my degree and I didn't have a player in the league and I never really foresaw the SaberCats really ever winning anything. You can imagine my suprise when they somehow make the playoffs, beat OCO and then rise to the Ultimus and actually win the big one for the first time in fourteen incredibly poor seasons of existing.

Warren was the unsung hero not because of his stats, but because of the pressure of the entire franchise he had on his back. He performed and got them there god damn chip he did. He went out there and thrived and really one could call him the greg jennings of the San Jose SaberCats. If you get that reference, then that's all really what I need to say.

(S14) Ultimus Week! - karl - 04-29-2019

1) For my playoff review I will be looking at the semi-final matchups between the San Jose Sabercats and the Orange County Otters and the Philadelphia Liberty and the Baltimore Hawks. In both cases a 9-5 underdog managed to play spoiler to an 11-3 favorite and move on to the Ultimus finals. In the first game, the Hawks got out to an early 7-0 lead on a touchdown from Errol Maddox. The Liberty would reduce that lead on a 25 yard field goal to end the quarter and then gain a lead of their own early in the 2nd quarter with a touchdown of their own. The Hawks would quickly erase that lead though scoring a late touchdown to end the half. Adding to 14-10 lead, the Hawks would score yet another touchdown early in the second half to go up 21-10. With the game nearly out of the reach the Liberty would mount an impressive comeback racking up two touchdowns and two field goals in the final 17 minutes of play. The final field goal came with just 19 seconds left on the clock, breaking the 28 point tie as the Liberty would go on to win 31-28 in an absolute thriller. The other game was equally hyped, but didn't prove to be quite as exciting as the first one. After the Otters put up the first score on a 5 yard touch down run the Sabercats took over the game in a serious way rattling off 24 straight points. The Otters would net a late field goal and touchdown to keep the score respectable, but after the Sabercats touchdown late in the third quarter it was pretty much over for the reigning champions.

3) The 9-5 Philadelphia Liberty battle against the 9-5 San Jose Sabercats in a winner take all Ultimus finals. At the quarterback position we have Adriana Falconi vs. Joliet Christ. From a regular season perspective it's difficult to pick a decisive winner between the two of them. While Falconi did manage to rack up 4106 yards, 668 more than Christ, as well as 28 touchdowns, 1 more than Christ, his passer rating is marginally worse than his opponents which sits at 87.9 compared to Christ's 94.6, the second highest in the league. In round 1 I'd give the edge to Falconi who managed to out duel Gambino and the high flying Baltimore Hawks. Honestly though it's pretty much all out the window once the clock starts in the finals. Falconi finished the game with 22/36 throws, 1 TD, 1 interception and a passer rating of 83.8. The winner and champion quarterback Christ finished with 18/28 throws, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception and a passer rating of 99.1. A good chunk of San Jose's damage was done on the ground as 212 of the 444 yards were rushing. Nevertheless Christ performed well when asked upon racking up 232 passing yards compared to Falconi's superior 286. Keep in mind he did so with much fewer attempts, finishing with 8.3 yards per pass compared to Falconi's 7.9. Seeing as both slipped up and managed to record 1 interception the stat is relatively a wash.

7) Finishing with a league worst 2-12 record, the Arizona Outlaws are a far cry away from being a contender for the Ultimus in the immediate future, but the building blocks are there as new management appears to be guiding this team in a positive direction. With a strong emphasis on defense, the Outlaws possess several promising young players eager to make their mark on the league. Griffin and Vans finished 2nd and 4th respectively in total tackles, while the latter also finished 9th in total sacks. Mughes also finished 2nd league wide in interceptions. These three are all young and should be nice pieces to build around for future seasons which is where this team truly shines. With a wealth of draft picks in the next couple drafts this team has fully embraced the rebuild and has put in the time needed to execute it correctly. The most notable contribution comes straight from the top naturally as general manager Victoria Danvers continues to put in countless hours in the war room, meticulously scouting every potential prospect. Her dedication to this rebuild has ignited the team as they'll look to repay her for her hard work on the field in future seasons to come.
