Yeti looking to get back on track after preseason - PigSnout - 06-11-2017

According to the league predictions thread, many viewed the Yeti as a top team coming into the year. However, they did not have the look of a top team during the preseason. The Yeti began the preseason against the Hawks, who many analysts viewed as one of the weaker teams entering the season. However, the Hawks proved the analysts out as they routed the Yeti 25-3. The biggest surprise was in the quarterback duel where Scrub Kyubee posted a 105.8 passer rating with a 3-0 TD-INT ratio while Logan Noble had a 48.9 passer rating with a 0-2 TD-INT ratio. This came as a surprise as many preseason predictions had Noble rated as the top quarterback entering the season while Kyubee was more under the radar.

The Yeti managed to rebound in their next match against the Arizona Outlaws as they won 17-13. The Yeti’s defense came up with big plays as they were able to get 2 interceptions against Vincent Draxel, one of the league’s top quarterbacks and the preseason passing yard leader, along with 8 sacks. Logan Noble also looked closer to his hype as he improved his passer rating to 99.8 and threw both of the Yeti’s touchdowns with only one interception.

The Yeti hoped to continue their momentum as they faced the Wraiths and held them to only 17 points, but the offense faltered and was unable to score a touchdown as it only mustered 9 points against the Wraiths’ defense. The defense made plays as it once again snagged two interceptions, including one by Mike McNoodle who now had gotten an interception two weeks in a row, however they did not record any sacks against the Wraiths’ stout offensive line. It was another rough outing for Logan Noble who threw an interception without any touchdowns and had a passer rating of 58.0.

The Yeti hoped to get back on track and finish the preseason at .500 by overcoming the Sabercats. They held the Sabercats to just 15 points but were only able to respond with 13 points of their own. They especially struggled against Sabercats linebacker Alexander Selich who caught two interceptions, which stifled the Yeti’s offensive momentum. Logan Noble threw a touchdown but his performance was darkened by the two interceptions and he finished with a passer rating of 60.0.

Despite the hype and expectations, the Yeti finished the preaseason at 1-3 with their only win coming against the winless Outlaws. However, it was not all doom and gloom for the Yeti. After allowing 25 points and a passer rating of 105.8 against the Hawks in the first game, the defense tightened up and allowed an average of 15 points and an average passer rating of 68.333. If the defense continues to play this well, the offense will not need to be a powerhouse in order to win games. Despite struggles in the passing game, the running game looked impressive and had a high average yards per carry. However, the Yeti did not score any rushing touchdowns so the running game has room to improve in the redzone. Overall, the Yeti only had 3 touchdowns compared to 7 field goals, so converting more redzone opportunities will be crucial going forward. However, if the Yeti can score more touchdowns rather than field goals and the defense continues to excel, they should be able to return to their expectations as a top team. However, the top variable in the Yeti’s success going forward is Logan Noble. In the Yeti’s only win, Noble had a passer rating of 99.8 while he had an average passer rating of 55.633 when the Yeti lost. The Yeti are a tough team to beat when Noble plays at a high level, but they struggle to succeed when he struggles. However, the Yeti are not very worried about Noble’s performance. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and his stats should average out to reflect his skill over the course of a longer season. The Yeti will likely change up their strategies for the regular season and many of their players have been working hard and have large amounts of TPE coming in before the regular season. Despite their struggles in the preseason, the Yeti still have the pieces that led to their hype entering the season and still have the potential to be a playoff team once the actual season starts.
