OUTLAWS BACKFIELD BATTLE
Writer - Carson Shmyr, Noble

The Arizona Outlaws backfield battle has been one of the most widely discussed topics of the regular season so far, alongside the quarterback quarrel of the Orange County Otters. So far, Reg Mackworthy has run away with the first back position, but his performances in the first two games of the season have been less than stellar for a supposed all star running back. Secondaries Jack Durden and Michael Newman each have a far better yards per carry average the Mackworthy, with each of them posting at least 0.5 yards stronger stats.

Thus far in the season though, these running backs have not been given an equal change to the league's other running backs. Starting backs are typically upwards of thirty carries, where as spread among the three backs on Arizona there is 54 total carries. These smaller numbers mean that so far, there just isn't a large enough sample size to really know what to expect from these three backs for the rest of the season.

Another area of the game you need to look it as the opponents the teams played. So far, the Outlaws have played the San Jose Sabercats and the Colorado Yeti. One of the strongest teams in the league based upon their first two games, the Yeti have a strong line that is nearly impossible to break through for rushers. Comparatively, the Sabercats allow more yards from rushes per game, and have a weaker line for rushing the quarterback. Colorado's rush blocking stand point means warped statistics, and the Outlaws will still have another match up against them later in the season.

As of now, Mackworthy likely has a pretty solid spot on the Outlaws roster. While his performance hasn't been amazing by any regard, he's performing decently for the opportunity he is being given. Durden and Newman are close on his heels, but as of now they just haven't been given the chance to really shine in their positions. The most likely even to happen in the next two weeks of play is that Durden or Newman will be given the starts in order to try and balance out the chances given. With continued development of each player, the fight for the starting back position is quite the close battle.

The Arizona Outlaws have opened the season 1-1, taking a loss to the undefeated Mammoth and winning their opening match against the San Jose Sabercats. Their next two games are against the winless Hawks and the balanced and dominantly defensive Wraiths. With a tough schedule coming up, only time can tell how the success of the Outlaws will contribute to deciding this close backfield battle.
