*Vander Jones Announces Free Agency Decision - Rise of Smitty - 04-26-2019 Vander Jones hit the market this year after opting out of my contract with the Orange County Otters who drafted him as a late round pick in Season 13. It can be argued that the Otters made a great selection but it can also be argued that they didn't as Jones never made it onto the professional team as he spent three seasons in the DSFL. Jones tied the single season DSFL record in interceptions this past season while leading the league in interceptions, pass deflections, and defensive touchdowns. He had a Defensive Player of the Year caliber season and was certainly the top corner back. The market would figure to be robust for Jones as corner back is a position that is in demand in the NSFL. Robust it was not. Only three teams had contacted Jones as of last night those being the New Orleans Second Line, Philadelphia Liberty, and his own Orange County Otters. These three teams offered drastically different opportunities as the Otters would have to create a spot at safety for him, the Liberty needed a new corner to take over and allow their safeties to play at their natural spots, and Second Line wanting Jones to be the foundation at corner and the guy they build around in the secondary. Each team would be offering the same amount of money so which decision will Jones make? The decision Vander Jones has come to is something out of the box. Vander Jones will be signing with the Philadelphia Liberty. Jones will now become the Liberty best, natural position, corner on the roster. Or will he? No! In fact Vander Jones will be signing with the Liberty and reverting to his old high school position of running back! The Liberty had some hardship on offense at the running back position after rookie Fast Boija didn't quite pan out. Jones had a desire to get back on the offensive side of the ball and he actually presented the idea to the Liberty in which they were fully on board with.
