*Torenson Dazzles in Debut at RB - adam2552 - 05-29-2019

Sam Torenson explodes onto DSFL scene with historic night. Sam Torenson was drafted 6th overall by the Portland Pythons in this year’s DSFL Draft. Until this week, many Portland fans were questioning the pick as Sam’s production on the field was not living up to his pre-draft hype.

Sam Torenson was a first round pick after-all, and the fickle Portland fans will not live with just 19 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and no sacks from what was supposed to be a key piece of their defensive line this season. Drafted 6th overall as a defensive tackle, expectation for Torenson were high. The Portland front office invested a lot in the player and expected immediate dividends. Despite his lack of on the field success, Torenson was always working hard in the locker room and in the gym. His teammates said he was usually the first guy in the practice facility in the morning and always the last guy to leave. That hard work shows, as currently he tops all season 16 prospects in TPE. It is that hard work ethic that Torenson brings to the table that caused Portland to re-evaluate what Torenson could be for the Pythons.

The Portland GMs and Torenson had a long behind-closed-doors meeting prior this past week. During the meeting, we don’t know what was said, but Torenson come out of the meeting with a new position. The front office knowing how hard of a worker he is, felt that he could make a fairly natural transition from defensive tackle to running back. Torenson spent the week working with the first team offense, learning the playbook, and a whole new position from scratch.

In his double-header debut, he did not disappoint. Torenson carried the Pythons to two wins. He compiled 192 yards on the ground, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He caught four passes for another 21 yards. And he even scored the first two, of what will be many, many more touchdowns. With his 5.6 yards per carry, Torenson already ranks third among all running backs with at least 30 carries. Due to other running backs having an eight game head start on Torenson, I’m sure you’re wondering how he stacks up against other running backs over the course of the season. If you expound his stats over 10 games he would have:

960 Rushing Yards - 6th Overall, 1st among S16 RBs
105 Receiving Yards - 4th Overall, 1st among S16 RBs
10 Rushing TDs - 2nd Overall, 1st among S16 RBs

If Torenson can keep grinding and developing in the locker room, there is no doubt that he will be one of the top picks come the Season 16 Draft. As he continues to learn the position, his performance on the field should improve. He will get faster and stronger, and he will learn how to read his blocks better and hit the holes harder. After Portland’s two wins in the the double-header, they are now in control of their own destiny for a playoff spot. Torenson will be essential to Portland’s chances at making the playoffs and beyond.

The biggest question is, after this amazing debut, will the stat recorders finally spell his name correctly in the index? It is T-O-R-E-N-S-O-N, I’m sure his opponents won’t get it wrong as they watch him scamper into the end zone every night.
