*Building the Copperheads and the Butchers, Part 2 - nickyvmlp - 06-25-2019

The Austin Copperheads and the Chicago Butchers are two teams that are being constructed in two very different manners. The Copperheads are led by Dick Wizardry, a S12 running back entering his prime, and Easton Cole, an incoming S16 rookie. They’re planning for the future, stockpiling draft picks and acquiring young, active talent. Seven of their top eight players in TPE were drafted in Season 12 or earlier. Meanwhile, the Butchers are taking their shot right now. They’re led by two guys, Kazimir Oles and D’Pez Poopsie, two Season 10ers who are both a year away from regression. All of their top seven TPE earners are from Season 11 or later. I’m fascinated to see where these two teams will go out of the gate, but as the NSFL Draft is now in sight, let’s see how these two teams have improved in free agency.

Austin Copperheads

QB Easton Cole - 182 TPE
RB Dick Wizardry - 875
WR Django Anoa’i - 540
WR Sam Hardwick - 522
WR Rod Tidwell - 354
TE Chase Jensen - 407
TE Michael Rood - 112
OL Edmond Beaver-Dantes - 296
OL Rahm Kota - 103
DE Grayson Kuusela - 470
DE Joseph Henry - 218
DE Khalil Sack - 50
DT Footballer Sackerman - 458 (traded to SJS/OAK)
DT Nick Snider - 124
DT Bruce Waynner - 59
LB Sandip Bakshi - 316
LB A.J. Robertson - 249
CB Spencer Castle - 383
CB Gordon Ramsey Jr. - 213
S Shannon Hobbs - 334
S Jonathan Towers - 196
S Troy Humuhumunukunukuapua'a - 175
K Alfredo Crisco - 221

Austin hasn’t made a ton of big moves as of yet. It seems like they don’t want to blow all of their cap room, and then not have the money necessary to resign those stars in a few years (aka the Indianapolis Colts method) Also, Easton Cole might struggle in his first season or two, so it would make sense for them to bide their time, and collect draft picks and then unleash them on the league when the time is right. And the reason why they have so many picks comes from two big trades. The first one involved sending Footballer Sackerman back to San Jose along with the #12 pick in this year’s draft, and acquiring this year’s #19 pick, S17’s third, and S18’s second. Going back in this year’s draft really doesn’t matter that much for Austin because they have to take Cole in the second, whether that pick is at #12 or #19. I wouldn’t have given up Sackerman myself, since now the D-line is just awful besides Grayson Kuusela and now he’s gonna get all the attention, but maybe those picks will become something really good. They also traded with Chicago, giving the Butchers the second overall pick in the upcoming draft and some cap space, but in the process, picking up Chicago’s first next year and first and second the year after that. They still have the #5 pick from an earlier trade, and there’s enough players in this year’s draft, that whoever would be available at #5 won’t be that much worse than the player they would've got at #2, and even if Chicago explodes in Year 1, they’ll still have two extra top ten picks and an extra top 20 in the next two years. Overall, they now have 14 picks in the first three rounds of the next three drafts.

However, the product they’ll be putting on the field this year probably won’t be that good. The only free agency moves they’ve made have involved extending their own guys, specifically Dick Wizardry and kicker Alfredo Crisco. They have the #5 pick in the draft, and mock drafts are all over the place on these guys. Chad Maulalo and Alberto McGwire are possibilities in this range to fix that terribad D-Line, as is Anthony Rowland. He wasn’t that active during the DSFL season, but he has re-emerged lately, and with the Copperhead secondary ranging from mediocre to bad, any kind of improvement would be a serious boost. I’m also seeing Mako Mendonca going here. Despite being a waiver wire pick up in the D-League this year, he’s fifth in TPE among this draft class, and could really shine as the Wizard’s Apprentice.

Chicago Butchers

QB Rose Jenkins - 499 TPE
RB Ricky Adams - 595 (after regression)
RB Aksel Daniellson - 412
RB Seer Zephyrous - 382 (traded to ARI)
RB Ben Bortboy - 159
WR Kazimir Oles - 1285
WR Roger Batoff - 386
WR Felix Hasslehoff - 338
WR Andre Thorton - 50
TE Declan Harp - 592 (after regression)
TE Timmy Hoss - 191
DE D’Pez Poopsie - 1055
DE Kwame Mbanefo - 848
DE Marc Spector - 520 (traded to ARI)
DE Trevon Simmons - 50
DT Curtis Saul - 453
DT Will Foster - 271
DT Poster Nutbag - 50
LB Gekyume Stokeley - 387
LB Lightsout Lewis - 377
LB Guy Nikko - 349
LB Buddha Lebowski - 50
CB Achilles Hondo - 685
CB Xerxes Ridley - 382
CB Bobson Dugnutt - 345
CB Neon Demon - 50
S Jack Rambo - 272
S Avery Thomas - 69
K Kulture Fulture - 625
K Paul DiMirio III - 50

The worst kept secret in free agency went public not long after free agency opened. Rose Jenkins is now a Butcher, and the rest of the league should be scared. Jenkins has been active for a few seasons now, biding her time in Kansas City. And while she won't be the highest of highly rated quarterbacks, she'll be good enough for now (especially throwing to Kazimir Oles), and better in the future. Chicago also made a couple of trades, including the aforementioned one with Austin that landed them the #2 overall pick and some additional cap space. It cost them their first next year, and their first two picks in S18's draft, but Chicago is making something very clear. They're pushing their chips in, and going for a ring in the next couple of years. And in this humble analyst's opinion, they could get that ring. They also made a trade with the Arizona Outlaws, sending away Seer Zephyrous, Marc Spector, and a second round pick for Ricky Adams and Gekyume Stokeley. This now gives the Butchers three high caliber young linebackers and a very good running back corps with Adams and Aksel Danielsson, although that'll become a need soon. All they gave up in the deal was a third defensive end and a running back who they replaced, as well as another draft pick, but as we've seen, they aren't too worried about that.

This is going to be a team that makes some serious noise right away. They're good nearly everywhere. They have either high TPE players or elite young actives at every position. And they have the first two picks in this draft. They could take just about any of the top end players, and it would be a good fit for them. Sam Torenson could be the heir apparent to Ricky Adams, Blake Faux could let them run a 3-4 in style, Laszlo Fourty-Two would give them a high quality #2 receiver, and Alberto McGwire could fill in for an only decent Will Foster. There're no bad picks in that bunch. The only elite prospect that I think is a bad fit here is Dermot Lavelle Jr. He wants playing time more than anything else, and I don't think Chicago can give him that right away. And don't forget they also have the #11 pick, and could net another active there. Perhaps an O-linemen in Ben Tu'inukuafe, a tight end to succeed Declan Harp in Joshua Palmer, or maybe they can get some help at safety in Chance Matthews. If he does literally any updating, he'd be an improvement at their second safety position.
