*Jake Watson: The Next Cris Carter? - goodvsevil1275 - 08-11-2019

Jake Watson, a DSFL draft prospect from Toledo, has his goal in mind - to become the modern version of Cris Carter, without the drug and attitude issues.

In an attempt to distance himself from the unceremonious end to his college football career, Jake Watson has decided on a player to model his game after. Cris Carter, a troubled receiver from the Philadelphia Eagles and a bonafide star for the Minnesota Vikings, was known for his touchdown catches and sideline prowess while putting together a Hall of Fame-worthy resume. Young players always come into the league with lofty expectations for themselves, but in Watson's case, maybe that goal is not out of reach. Yes, comparing yourself to a legend such as Carter while spending only a year and college and not yet being drafted might appear to be cocky and arrogant. However, Watson seems to be aware of this and has made his thoughts on the matter vocal. "You know, having confidence in yourself, especially coming into a professional league, is never a bad thing," Watson said yesterday.

"For me as a young receiver, I grew up watching videos of guys like Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson. I'm not 6'5 and I'm not as fast as them and I know that. I don't know if I can match the longevity of Jerry Rice or Larry Fitzgerald. When I watch highlights, some guys stick out to me like Carter or Jordy Nelson, and even some Antonio Brown. Guys who worked on their technique more than their physique. I don't have a world class body or athletic ability, but I can put in hours and hours on the field to work out my route running and moves. And that's where I have the edge on other guys. In football, you'll eventually come up against someone who has the same physical tools as you. That's when my hundreds of hours on the practice field can take over. Using moves, running routes.. that's my thing. And that's what I hope teams will see in me."

It remains to be seen whether Watson will make an impact in the league. There are always some guys that come in and can't meet the standards of the NSFL. But there are always the diamonds in the rough. The ones that come in a little unpolished but flourish when given a chance. Jake Watson sees himself in that group. If you don't, he'll just have to prove you wrong on the field.
