Ranking NSFL Team Defences prior to S18 start

Couple of assumptions before we being: every team is using 4 man secondary, 3 linebackers, 2 DE & 2 DT. If there isn't enough players for each position I try to move around other pieces so it's likely not exactly what GMs will plan out, but should give decent enough picture. I'm still no football expert, but certainly more advanced than over a year ago when I was yet to watch actual game and, to my dismay, dabbled with sim a bit. These are just TPE based rankings, so take it with grain of salt. There are other big breakpoints that characterize good defenses like having two 2 max speed cornerbacks (that get no stats).

PHI 10. Philadelphia Liberty
Personnel:
Safeties: S11 Lennox Garnett & S15 Richard D’Attoria V
Cornerbacks: S15 Emondov Emoji & S17 Julian McMorris
Linebackers: S14 Gekyume Stokeley & S15 Rock Hardshaft & S12 Derek Bohne
Defensive Ends: S12 Ikaika Kalilimoku & S11 Steven Moore
Defenstive Tackles: S16 Alberto McGwire
Punter/Kicker: S12 Roderick Castleberry
Ranks:
Safeties: 1768 TPE (2 Conference / 2 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 1103 TPE (3 Conference / 5 Overall)
Secondary: 2871 TPE (2 Conference / 2 Overall)
Linebackers: 930 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 523 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 146 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Defensive Line: 669 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 95 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Overall: 4565 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Last year: They were the worst last year in terms of point prevention and both rush and pass defense struggled immensely.
Strength: Their secondary is actually more than competitive and I was a bit surprised by last year results. Though just great coverage can only do as much without any real pass rush threats.
Biggest need: D-line is literally empty and for most part inactive, linebackers are in dire need of reinforcements too, I wouldn't be surprised if they bottomed out one year more and tried recoup some value of their great secondary vets in favor of rest positions.
How to attack? Either exploit linebackers and weak D-line with rushing or use up time that should be available for quarterback to let plays develop and use coverage mistakes that inevitably happen.

CHI 9. Chicago Butchers
Personnel:
Safeties: S15 Jack Rambo & S18 Mike Hockhertz
Cornerbacks: S15 Xerxes Ridley & S10 Achilles Hondo
Linebackers: S15 Guy Nikko & S13 Spencer Castle & S11 Jonathan Rice
Defensive Ends: S10 D’Pez Poopsie & S14 Joseph Henry
Defensive Tackles: S11 Curtis Saul & S11 Will Foster
Punter/Kicker: S11 Kulture Fulture
Ranks:
Safeties: 606 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 998 TPE (4 Conference / 7 Overall)
Secondary: 1604 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Linebackers: 1142 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 881 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 580 TPE (3 Conference / 8 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1461 TPE (2 Conference / 6 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 545 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Overall: 4752 TPE (4 Conference / 9 Overall)
Last year: Butchers last year actually got into postseason more so on backs of their defense than offensive endeavors. They were second in points & yards allowed with best rush defense overall. However this defense is aging and some crucial pieces like Blake Faux are no longer on the team.
Strength: Their D-line is quite decent so they should be able to effectively pass rush in effort to help dreadful secondary. They also have front-runner for punter of the year, that should have more than plenty of opportunities to showcase his skill.
Biggest need: Team is aging a lot, and it's clear that it lacked a healthy dose of prospects given their expansion status, you can decide to either bottom out form the get go, because it's incredibly rare to avoid that completely as a new team. Only safety position seems to be rather young, but they still could use reinforcements there.
How to attack? It's probably one of easiest team to plan against, since everything should work decently, and as long as your offensive line keeps up the semi-decent QB with good receivers should shred the secondary for huge plays.

COL 8. Colorado Yeti
Personnel:
Safeties: S12 Logan Lejune & S13 Knute Knurtsson
Cornerbacks: S15 Quentin Sinclair & S18 Louisiana Purchase
Linebackers: S15 Mo Berry & S15 Tony Gabagool & S18 Pete Parker
Defensive Ends: S18 Steco Ocewilder & S12 Joey Sachs
Defenstive Tackles: S17 Bubba Thumper & S18 Trae Bacon
Punter/Kicker: S14 Stephen Harris Jr
Ranks:
Safeties: 1258 TPE (4 Conference / 7 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 812 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Secondary: 2070 TPE (4 Conference / 7 Overall)
Linebackers: 1606 TPE (2 Conference / 4 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 373 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 612 TPE (2 Conference / 7 Overall)
Defensive Line: 985 TPE (4 Conference / 9 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 131 TPE (4 Conference / 7 Overall)
Overall: 4792 TPE (3 Conference / 8 Overall)
Last year: Yeti defense was bad last year and might be slightly worse this year, they especially had trouble stopping opponents rush.
Strength: Their linebackers personnel is promising and young, which should serve them well in coming years, overall it's one of the youngest teams so as long as they keep up with development should start improving steadily.
Biggest need: Safeties while not being the most glaring hole are approaching regression and not being stars will quickly get eaten up and might be unusable past S20.
How to attack? Same as with Butchers you can pick your strategy and it should be more depending on the offense than stopping ability of Yeti defense. Also 3rd straight ASFC team on the list.

SJS 7. San Jose Sabercats
Personnel:
Safeties: S12 Trey Staley & S12 Jorel Tuck
Cornerbacks: S17 Tyron Brackenridge & S16 Anthony Rowland
Linebackers: S09 Kolby Deringer & S15 JoJo Burr-Kirven & S18 Joseph Wozniak
Defensive Ends: S12 Ja’brill Tuck & S11 Danny Methane
Defenstive Tackles: S12 Freezer Riposte & S18 Oswald Grimnir
Punter/Kicker: S17 Kicky Bobby
Ranks:
Safeties: 1573 TPE (1 Conference / 4 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 589 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Secondary: 2162 TPE (3 Conference / 6 Overall)
Linebackers: 961 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 446 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 1287 TPE (2 Conference / 2 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1733 TPE (3 Conference / 4 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 128 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Overall: 4984 TPE (5 Conference / 7 Overall)
Last year: S17 was already a twilight for the team that had it's most successful run in franchise history, but the defense still was able to keep them in games.
Strength: Freezer Riposte is among prime pass rushing threats so better have your Centers & Guards ready. Veteran safeties are offset by inexperienced corners.
Biggest need: Youth influx - while team doesn't look very old younger pieces aren't top notch and best players enter regression which will hurt already this year.
How to attack? Exploit cornerbacks during man-to-man coverage, when they can't rely on their safeties providing help, similarly whenever you get past D-line you should shred linebackers for big gains during rush plays.

NOLA 6. New Orleans Second Line
Personnel:
Safeties: S08 William H. Harrison & S12 Jeff Jefferson IV
Cornerbacks: S15 Deon Taylor & S17 Jordan Andrews
Linebackers: S15 Johnny Slothface & S15 Quenton Bode & S18 Thudd Kassel
Defensive Ends: S10 Lo Rax & S17 Ronald “The Watt” Watkins
Defenstive Tackles: S17 Brayden Ennis & S18 Bjørn Ironside
Punter/Kicker: S13 Alex Frost
Ranks:
Safeties: 586 TPE (5 Conference / 10 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 1100 TPE (3 Conference / 6 Overall)
Secondary: 1686 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Linebackers: 1673 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 820 TPE (3 Conference / 5 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 693 TPE (5 Conference / 6 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1513 TPE (4 Conference / 5 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 141 TPE (3 Conference / 6 Overall)
Overall: 5013 TPE (4 Conference / 6 Overall)
Last year: Wasn't good. Rush stooping wasn't awful, but coverage was terrible and defense was leaking ton of points.
Strength: Rather balanced rooster which is really young outside of secondary and Lo Rax.
Biggest need: Safeties are just plain old & bad at this point of their careers and already regressing, so they are also biggest need & being big liability on the field. As mentioned safeties needs to be quickly replaced, one more D-linemen wouldn't hurt either since Lo Rax is slowly approaching end of the career.
How to attack? For now advanced receivers & quarterbacks should be able to exploit secondary and teams are likely to focus that, as linebackers are rapidly improving and already among league bests.

BAL 5. Baltimore Hawks
Personnel:
Safeties: S15 Fatih Terim & S15 Walt Green
Cornerbacks: S10 Xandra Troyski & S12 Arbin Asipi III
Linebackers: S15 Marquees Acho & S08 Ben Horne & S18 Juan Marston
Defensive Ends: S13 Benson Harris & S11 Jaylin Hobbs
Defenstive Tackles: S10 Steven Oats & S18 Fabricio Baldari
Punter/Kicker: S16 ForThe Brand
Ranks:
Safeties: 1576 TPE (3 Conference / 3 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 1252 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Secondary: 2828 TPE (3 Conference / 3 Overall)
Linebackers: 1165 TPE (3 Conference / 7 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 650 TPE (3 Conference / 6 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 406 TPE (4 Conference / 9 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1056 TPE (3 Conference / 8 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 285 TPE (2 Conference / 4 Overall)
Overall: 5334 TPE (2 Conference / 5 Overall)
Last year: They were middle of the pack and should stay there according to my predictions. Might have been a pit unlucky point wise as they limited opponents to least amount of yards, especially they were apt at limiting opponents passing.
Strength: Their secondary remains among the best, both safeties and cornerbacks remaining in Top 3, though while the former keep improving the latter start regressing a lot.
Biggest need: D-line is rather old and not impressive at all, linebackers core will need to replace Horne soon too.
How to attack? First team I'd recommend using rush plays and utilizing RB more than air raid offence on the list. It's not automatic suicide to attack their secondary, but power playbook might be effective and safe here.

AUS 4. Austin Copperheads
Personnel:
Safeties: S15 Chase Jensen & S17 Takeda Okura
Cornerbacks: S16 Dermot Lavelle Jr. & S18 Xavien Adams
Linebackers: S14 Sandip "Sandy" Bakshi & S16 Blake Faux & S17 Honda Edmond
Defensive Ends: S12 Grayson Kuusela & S18 Net Gaines
Defenstive Tackles: S12 Dick Wizardry & S18 John-Caleb Bradberton
Punter/Kicker: S14 Alfredo "Thighmaster" Crisco
Ranks:
Safeties: 1049 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 882 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Secondary: 1931 TPE (4 Conference / 8 Overall)
Linebackers: 1387 TPE (4 Conference / 6 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 823 TPE (2 Conference / 4 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 1331 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Defensive Line: 2154 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 319 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Overall: 5791 TPE (3 Conference / 4 Overall)
Last year: Good rush defense wasn't enough to propel them to upper echelons, but they should be able to make leap this year.
Strength: D-line was dominant last year and should be even better this year. However this year they should focus more on pass rushing to force opponents hand before they exploit coverage deficiencies.
Biggest need: Their secondary needs time to develop, same with linebackers actually. They could use more depth there, but maybe trying to find replacements ahead of time for some D-line man entering regression.
How to attack? Aforementioned they are great rush defense, so it might been a good idea to focus on pass plays. Good WRs should still be able to outplay 1 v 1 young secondary, more will depend on how much time QB will have to make smart decisions.

ARI 3. Arizona Outlaws
Personnel:
Safeties: S15 Lamont McKinnie & S09 Bucky Barnes
Cornerbacks: S15 Lucas Knight & S12 Beau Montgomery
Linebackers: S12 Raymond Vans & S14 Leighton Lee & S12 Hike Mughes
Defensive Ends: S11 Marc Spector & S16 Chad Maulolo
Defenstive Tackles: S15 Ricardo Morris & S17 Shane Masters
Punter/Kicker: S11 Spencer Lawes
Ranks:
Safeties: 1360 TPE (3 Conference / 6 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 1359 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Secondary: 2719 TPE (1 Conference / 4 Overall)
Linebackers: 2007 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 633 TPE (4 Conference / 7 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 801 TPE (4 Conference / 4 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1434 TPE (5 Conference / 7 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 110 TPE (5 Conference / 9 Overall)
Overall: 6270 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Last year: Last year Top 3 should remain intact and that also mean Outlaws should retain that status. They were both adapt at stopping rush and pass.
Strength: 2nd best duo of corners should shut-down most receiving corps, while the linebackers provides great safety net for rush plays.
Biggest need: Bucky Barnes is on his last legs, similarly Spector so youth infusion is much needed there. Dominant linebackers might need some replacements too soon.
How to attack? D-line isn't nearly as good as rest of the defense, but I wouldn't count on mistakes in the secondary, same with trying to rush down the field.

OCO 2. Orange County Otters
Personnel:
Safeties: S11 Dan Schneider & S16 Jaylen Storm
Cornerbacks: S15 AJ Lattimer & S09 Gus T.T. Showbiz
Linebackers: S15 Lanzer Grievous & S13 David Ginsberg & S18 Korrin Abernathy
Defensive Ends: S11 Kwame Abayomi Mbanefo & S12 Tommy Salami
Defenstive Tackles: S12 Thorian Skarsgard
Punter/Kicker: S15 Alex Dasistwirklichseinnachname
Ranks:
Safeties: 1438 TPE (2 Conference / 5 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 1197 TPE (2 Conference / 4 Overall)
Secondary: 2635 TPE (2 Conference / 5 Overall)
Linebackers: 1537 TPE (3 Conference / 5 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 903 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 1089 TPE (3 Conference / 3 Overall)
Defensive Line: 1992 TPE (2 Conference / 3 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 354 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Overall: 6518 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Last year: Either they were lucky, since while being below average in allowed rush & pass yards they still only surrendered 21.4 (4th best in the league) amount of points or theirs personnel just worked great in the red zone.
Strength: No big holes, everything is at least average and especially up front they are dangerous.
Biggest need: As it stands now they simply need more players, especially in the D-line, unless they'll play with some unusual scheme. Gus Showbiz will need to be replaced quickly too.
How to attack? Two good receivers should be the key to exploit old Showbiz legs before secondary will be able to double up.

YKW 1. Yellowknife Wraiths
Personnel:
Safeties: S10 Danny Grithead & S15 Lightsout Lewis
Cornerbacks: S13 Johnny Snuggles & S12 Axel Hornbacher
Linebackers: S11 Alex Selich & S18 Maurice Virtanen & S15 Logan Uchiha
Defensive Ends: S15 Nero Alexander & S12 Luke Smyles
Defenstive Tackles: S15 Ryan Leaf Jr & S12 Thomas Clark
Punter/Kicker: S12 Neo Donaldson
Ranks:
Safeties: 1825 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Cornerbacks: 2012 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Secondary: 3837 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Linebackers: 2161 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Defensive Ends: 1288 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Defensive Tackles: 785 TPE (1 Conference / 5 Overall)
Defensive Line: 2073 TPE (1 Conference / 2 Overall)
Punter/Kicker: 257 TPE (3 Conference / 5 Overall)
Overall: 8328 TPE (1 Conference / 1 Overall)
Last year: Similarly to Otters, but even better. Best point prevention, but just 6th in rush yards against and 4th in pass defense.
Strength: The difference between Top (Wraiths) and 2nd best (Otters) is almost as big as between Otters and the probably the worst defense of Liberty. They have best secondary by far, best linebackers and defensive ends, only defensive tackles don't rank as fantastic, but they are average at worst too.
Biggest need: Most of the players are in their prime and most of people already know how fickle those are in NSFL. Only one player is younger than S15, but it's nitpicking at this point and we should witness generational results in S18.
How to attack? Just give up.

Data sheet - TPE tracker was huge help in making this article so shutout to @Eco once again for that. It was quite interesting article to make, getting to know league better, because last time I dived in depth into TPE rankings of teams was S10 depth chart series. I maybe will do Team Offence series too if time allows.

Good stuff man. Would Baltimore's rank change if you included Scorp who switched to S to fill in at LB? Just occurred so not registered inthe tracker yet.

Very much deserved, it's impresive rooster you put up together.

Not sure if that would be enough to catch Austin, but thanks for noticing, I think other teams (certainly NOLA) also have some position switches that are not visible yet.
