Week 5 Highlights:

Grey Ducks 31 over Coyotes 6 - Minnesota needed a win in a big way this week and they went out and got it with a convincing win over the Coyotes. They started off a little slow after an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, but then they found their groove in the fourth quarter and never looked back. Offensively Darrel Williams was the workhorse for Minnesota as he gobbled up yards all game and it paid off with a four yard touchdown with 13:55 left in the fourth. This caused the dam to break and the ducks ended up scoring 21 in the final quarter alone, burying the Coyotes once and for all. Hal Fassingit was an imposing force on the defensive side as he racked up nine tackles on his side of the field, allowing only a net gain of one yard. Nine attempts to run at him and he let them move three feet. That was a dominant performance if I’ve ever seen one.

Pythons 37 over Seawolves 10 - Portland absolutely imposed their will on the Seawolves. When you’re running as well as the Pythons did in this one, why do anything else? 257 yards and four touchdowns on the ground showed just how dominant of a showing this was. Their rushing attack couldn’t be stopped as they put up 24 points in the second half alone. Darnell Johnson got involved in the passing game as well in this one with three of his catches converting huge first downs in long yardage situations on drives that resulted in points. On the other side for Portland, it was the story of two interceptions and Randall Jimmerson. Jimmerson’s four tackles in this game resulted in net negative yardage for the Seawolves and all four resulted in punts by the other squad. He imposed his will on the defensive line and showed why offenses should think twice before running to his side of the line.

Buccaneers 34 over Luchadores 17 - The stakes in this game were as high as they can get. With Myrtle Beach and Tijuana neck and neck, this game not only decided first place in their conference but also first place in the entire DSFL. What should have been a tightly contested game was blown wide open by a first quarter interception return for a touchdown by the dream himself, Kacey Dream. Tijuana never quite looked settled after that and with Brock Phoenix throwing a 10 yard touchdown to close the first quarter, the 17-0 Myrtle Beach lead simply became insurmountable for Tijuana. They did try to fight back a bit as Colonel Tushfinger and Jed Podolak combined for monster games, racking up 246 yards and a touchdown between them. Kyle Idlewyld also put his best foot forward in an attempt to slow down Myrtle Beach and all four of his negative plays resulted in punts for the Buccaneers squad. Unfortunately despite their efforts, the Buccaneers put together a solid team defensive showing as they forced three fumbles and held the Luchadores to converting only 4 of their 14 third down attempts. It was that effort that ensured Tijuana couldn’t crawl back into this one, leaving Myrtle Beach on top for now.

Week 6 Highlights

Buccaneers 17 over Coyotes 14 - After their huge win against the Luchadores, it almost looked like the Buccaneers had decided to sleep on the Coyotes as they just barely pulled out a close one in the last minutes of the fourth quarter. Despite Myrtle Beach racking up 428 yards of offense to Kansas City’s 187, it was Vince Hammerson who kept the Buccaneers in this one. An impressive 40 yard field goal in the first quarter and a 42 yard score off of a short punt caused by a Warren Stephens sack in the second kept the Buccaneers in this one long enough for them to finally close out a drive in the fourth quarter. Myrtle Beach got the ball back with 8:39 on the clock and it initially looked like they were going to stall out. Then Rayne Gordon broke open for a massive 27 yard catch that put the Buccaneers on the Coyotes side of the field. Then using a healthy dose of Teddy Smith, they were able to run the clock down to 2:27 before Ricardo Rose scored their first and only touchdown of the game. Momentarily it looked like too much time was left as Kansas City began to drive, but with 40 seconds left Bobby Boucher burst through the line on fourth down to take down the Kansas City runner in the backfield. This closed out a game that was far too close for comfort for Myrtle Beach.

Luchadores 21 over Seawolves 3 - The Luchadores went on the road in this one and put it away early. In a first quarter that saw Barnabas Cole end three separate Seawolves drives, there wasn’t much going on offense. Then on their first drive in the second half, the Luchadores found their groove as they ran on eight consecutive plays in which Colonel Tushfinger and Jed Podolak averaged 6.25 yards per touch. It was capped off with a 7 yard trot by Tushfinger into an open end zone. Add in an interception return for a touchdown towards the end of the second followed by a half ending drive crushed by back to back sacks from Mason Blaylock and Inspectah Deck and Tijuana was able to coast for the rest of this one. The Seawolves did their best to remain scrappy and keep the game reasonable as they held Tijuana scoreless in the third quarter, but a fourth quarter touchdown reception by Tijuana’s Randy Vuxta put this one out of reach permanently.

Grey Ducks 28 over Pythons 26 - This game quickly became game of the week as Minnesota and Portland battled it out for first place in the NFC. For a brief moment in the first quarter it was all Pythons. They set up Venus Powers for two field goals and four yard strike from Jay Cue to Tiny Tim at the end of the first quarter made it look like the Pythons were going to put this one away handedly up 13-0. With their first drive in the second quarter though, Minnesota showed some fight as Darrel Williams ran for a first down three plays in a row on a drive that was capped by a four yard Zack Vega to Tash Thompson touchdown. Another solid drive and a 101 yard kick return later and suddenly the Ducks were up 21-16 in a game that once looked out of hand. The Ducks had all the momentum and they looked like they were going to close out strong, but then an incredible 40 yard interception return from Desmond Scarlett put Portland back ahead. Despite heroic efforts by linebacker duo Willie B. Hardagain and Galf Wilf that mostly shut down the Minnesota rushing attack in the second half, they couldn’t stop a final drive orchestrated by Vega in the third quarter to put Minnesota ahead for the final time. The Minnesota secondary buckled down and forced 8 incompletions in the fourth quarter alone, keeping Portland from taking the lead again. It was an incredible back and forth game with both teams putting their best foot forward, but someone had to come out the victor!
