*Playoff analysis - JuOSu - 12-19-2019

I don't think this has really been highlighted before and it's not easy to find statistics on this on one page anywhere so I decided to just quickly check every team's playoff statistics a bit in terms of making the playoffs etc.

Based on total playoff appearances it looks as follows:

Orange County Otters 18
Baltimore Hawks 12
Yellowknife Wraiths 10
Arizona Outlaws 9
Philadelphia Liberty 9
San Jose Sabercats 7
Colorado Yeti 6
New Orleans Second Line 4
Chicago Butchers 2
Austin Copperheads 1

Every team has indeed made the playoffs now, though with very varied numbers. The Otters, impressively, have never missed the playoffs, a feat that I actually had not realized they had actually done. Incredible! I don't see this being talked about enough, or maybe I am just blind.

In terms of percentual appearances, Butchers are also doing really well, similar to Hawks, with 2 appearances in 3 seasons, though they are likely to miss again this year.

Obviously the Otters have the longest streak with 18 seasons in a row but who has the second longest playoff streak? It is actually the San Jose Sabercats with 6 seasons in a row!

Longest streaks:

Orange County Otters 18
San Jose Sabercats 6
Baltimore Hawks 5
Yellowknife Wraiths 5
Arizona Outlaws 5
Philadelphia Liberty 5
New Orleans Second Line 4
Colorado Yeti 3
Chicago Butchers 2
Austin Copperheads 1

Current streaks:

These are the current streaks that are at risk:

Orange County Otters 18
Yellowknife Wraiths 3
Arizona Outlaws 3
Baltimore Hawks 2
Colorado Yeti 1
Austin Copperheads 1

Obviously the Otters one stands out, no other team has a really long streak going, though obviously everyone wants to keep it going. It looks like Otters, Wraiths and Hawks ought to be able to keep their streak going. Arizona is currently also on a playoff spot, same for the Yeti though they are tied there. The Copperheads are unlikely to make it.

Longest droughts:

I also thought it would be interesting to look at longest droughts, not just longest streaks.

Arizona Outlaws 8
Yellowknife Wraiths 7
Colorado Yeti 7
New Orleans Second Line 7
San Jose Sabercats 5
Philadelphia Liberty 4
Baltimore Hawks 2
Austin Copperheads 2
Chicago Butchers 1
Orange County Otters 0

The Arizona Outlaws had the longest drought of any team in terms of reaching the playoffs. They had an 8 season streak where they failed to miss the playoffs.

Current drought:

New Orleans Second Line 7
Philadelphia Liberty 2
San Jose Sabercats 1
Chicago Butchers 1

The New Orleans Second Line is currently on the longest streak of their franchise history but good news! They locked in a playoff spot this season with the win last night and are therefore breaking the streak before they are breaking Arizona's longest streak. It will be interesting to see if we can build a nice little streak as well and start to become a bigger threat again!

Championships:

Well, while I was at it, I also decided to look at Championships.

Orange County Otters 7
Arizona Outlaws 4
Baltimore Hawks 2
New Orleans Second Line 2
Yellowknife Wraiths 1
Philadelphia Liberty 1
San Jose Sabercats 1

The Otters show their dominance once more by having the most titles. Three teams have yet to win a title, the Yeti and the two expansion teams from the recent expansion. I think everyone knows the three-peats so I don't need to do longest championship streak, so I will do percentage instead.

Percentage of titles won divided by playoff appearances:

Basically an effectiveness rating, how often have you won the titles compared to how often you had a shot in the playoffs:

New Orleans Second Line 50.00 %
Arizona Outlaws 44.44 %
Orange County Otters 38.88 %
Yellowknife Wraiths 20.00 %
Baltimore Hawks 16.67 %
San Jose Sabercats 14.28 %
Philadelphia Liberty 11.11 %

The New Orleans Second Line have been the most effective team, winning two titles in just four appearances. We will see how this season affects this rating! Arizona and Orange County has also been very effective.

Longest championship droughts:

Colorado Yeti 18
San Jose Sabercats 13
Arizona Outlaws 12
Philadelphia Liberty 11
Yellowknife Wraiths 10
Baltimore Hawks 9
New Orleans Second Line 7
Orange County Otters 5
Chicago Butchers 3
Austin Copperheads 3

The longest championship drought goes to the Colorado Yeti who have yet to win a title in the entire history of the league. The rest of the teams all have somewhat similar droughts with slight differences.

Current championship droughts:

Colorado Yeti 18
Philadelphia Liberty 11
Yellowknife Wraiths 10
New Orleans Second Line 7
San Jose Sabercats 4
Baltimore Hawks 3
Chicago Butchers 3
Austin Copperheads 3
Arizona Outlaws 2
Orange County Otters 0

The Yeti are obviously also on the longest current drought. The Liberty and Wraiths are behind that, then the Second Line. Can one of these teams end their drought this year?

Back when I was still in the war room in OCO we called it the "Be there" strategy. Doesn't matter if you're the best team, doesn't matter if you have HFA, just get in the playoffs and give your team a chance.
