*Pre-Draft Writeup: Andrew Nova - schauer - 01-13-2020

When the DSFL draft begins, Andrew Nova will be doing what he normally does in his free time. For him, its spending long days out by the lake near the home he grew up in fishing for the usual blue gill, sunfish, bass, and every so often Catfish. It’s been a hobby of his growing up and a way to spend Saturdays with his father in the hot and humid summer days of Northeast Ohio.

Football wasn’t always a priority for Nova. Growing up, he played it with friends but never had he played the game at any organizational level, instead sticking to track and playing baseball. It took the prodding of a coach to finally get him to try his hand at the sport before he gave it a shot in his Junior year.

Right out of the gate Nova shined as his exceptional speed caught defenders off guard with quickness not seen often in high school games. It didn’t take long for Nova’s playing time to increase as the coaches quickly saw that Nova’s speed and ability to read the field made him almost a natural for the game. Nova finished his Junior year all but guaranteed the starting spot at running back for his senior season. Despite this, Nova still took time in the summer to fish like he’s always done as a child, albeit less than usual. One thing that has stuck to Nova in his rise up from amateur to professional ranks is his work ethic, as even with the starting spot being guaranteed, the amount of work he put in didn’t waver.

Over the course of his senior season Nova, combined with the rest of the now talented roster of Midpark went 10-1. Even though success was bountiful, the work ethic didn’t begin to cease.
Once the season ended, Nova had expected some college scouts to offer him scholarships, but given his lack of playing time, he wasn’t offered one from any school. He eventually decided to go to Akron for business but planned to walk on for their football program.

It took a grueling amount of effort, but Nova won out a spot on the roster, even going as far as being redshirted his freshman year. From that point on, Nova started to become a household name at Akron, getting only faster in the process. Eventually came the “Supernova” game against the Toledo Rockets in which Andrew took three straight running plays to the house for touchdowns, getting 164 yards of rushing in on three plays.

All good stories have some negative moments, and perhaps the worst moment couldn’t have come at more inopportune time than in the MAC Championship game his senior year against the Eastern Michigan Eagles in which Nova only ran for 92 yards and had a game ending fumble after gaining 24 yards on a screen pass. Nova was quoted as saying it was “the one true regret of my football career”

Despite a bittersweet collegiate ending for Nova, brighter days are ahead for him in the DSFL. With fishing pole in one hand, and the cell phone ready to be answered in the other, Nova will be doing what he normally does and when the time comes, just like a true blue collar worker, he’ll be ready to get right back to work.
