Analyzing Upcoming S2 Free Agency - jparks98 - 07-06-2017

Now that the 1st season of the NSFL over, and the playoffs are starting soon, the second season will be here before anybody knows it. On the road to our sophomore year as a league, we will have to make a pit stop at everybody’s favorite restaurant, Free Agency. What this free agency class lacks in depth, makes up for with the talent at the top. With names like Josh Garden and Josh Bercovici, teams have the possibility to lockdown franchise players this year. Add in the fact that we have two new franchises, Las Vegas Legion and Philadelphia Liberty, this can make for one entertaining free agency. Here is a complete list of all the upcoming free agents grouped by teams:

YKW Wraiths
Bubba Nuck-RB: 277 Att, 1217 YDs, 4.7 YPC, 6 TDs
Josh Garden-WR: 70 Rec, 1178 YDs, 16.8 AVG, 7 TDs
IN-Wizard Stephen-WR: 5 Rec, 57 YDs, 11.4 AVG
LVL GM-Tyler Varga-DE: 29 TCKL, 12 TFL, 6 SCK
IN-Henry Rivere-FS: N/A
IN-Pablo Sanchez-S: 62 TCKL, 1/1 FF/FR, 1 SACK, 1 PD
IN Ryan Ellis-4 Punts, 147 YDs

ARI Outlaws
IN-Wes Washington-WR: 6Rec, 64 YDs, 10.1 AVG, 1 TD

COL Yeti
IN-Mark Bowden-CB: 30 TCKL, 1 TFL, 2 PD
IN-Granit Lewis-WR: N/A
IN-Rickey Mills-LB: 57 TCKL, 1TFL, 1 INT, 1 TD
IN-Everest Teagarden-DE: 67 TCKL, 8 SCK, 1 FF
IN-Atahualpa Romero-RB: N/A
IN-Barrack Accolyte-LB: N/A

SJS Sabercats
IN-Eric Hansen-CB: N/A
Vick Bowers Jr.-RB: 262 Att, 1003 YDs, 3.8 YPC, 2 TDs
Demetrius Wiley-RB: 112 Att, 458 YDs, 4.1 YPC, 3 TDs

BAL Hawks
Wren Piper-TE: 16 REC, 73 YDs 4.3 AVG, 1 TD

OCO Otters
Josh Bercovici-QB: 50/93 Comp/Att, 581 YDs, 4 TDs, 4 INTs
Brandon Walsh-K: 16/17 FGs, 15/15 XPs, 48 PNTs, 2071 YDs

The most interesting story when free agency starts will be Josh Bercovici. Throughout the preseason and the first couple of weeks of the regular season, there was a question about who will be the starting QB for the Otters. It was a three-way battle between Ethan Hunt, Josh Bercovici, and Mike Boss. The Orange County Otters traded away Ethan Hunt to the Sabercats and it became clear that the Otters were going to stick with Mike Boss as their starting QB. It seemed like Josh might be pushed out of the league as every team had their starting Quarterbacks already. Then the best news Bercovici could possibly hear was announced, there will be two new expansion teams to join the NSFL, the Las Vegas Legion and the Philadelphia Liberty. He must have had a lucky horseshoe shoved up his rear-end because he now has a second chance in the league and a chance to be the franchise quarterback that one of these expansions teams desperately need. I don’t expect the Josh Bercovici sweepstakes only be a two-team bidding war between the Legion and the Liberty though. My dark horse to bid on the services of Josh Bercovici is the Arizona Outlaws. There was a recent news leak that said Vincent Draxel has been showing up to games only and skipping practices. If that is the case then the Outlaws might be looking for someone more dedicated to the game. If anything the Arizona Outlaws should at least be keeping an eye on the Josh Bercovici sweepstakes. There was also recent news that Ethan Hunt wants out of San Jose so look for the Sabercats to throw their name in the Bercovici lottery. I expect it to be a full-blown bidding war between some teams for the right to let Josh Bercovici call them home.

The Yellowknife Wraiths has the possibility to be hit the hardest from free agency. They already lost defensive end superstar Tyler Varga to Las Vegas Legion. This is probably the reason why Bubba Nuck signed a 1 year deal. Already committed to the Wraiths Nuck will wait to resign so the Wraiths can have a little more wiggle room to sign some talent. That will leave one offensive superstar to resign for the Wraiths and his name is Josh Garden. Josh Garden was touted as the top player coming into the season and he proved why this season helping the Wraiths have one of the most dynamic offenses in the league. Resigning Garden should be the Wraiths number one priority. Luckily for the Wraiths, there has been a rumor that Josh Garden is very interested in continuing to play for the Wraiths next season. There will still be competition to sign him though as the Legion and the Liberty are looking to lock down a franchise player this season and they are hoping his name is Josh Garden.

This season Vick Bowers Jr. and Demetrius Wiley had to share the load for the Sabercats and both showed that they are some of the very best running backs in the league. Throughout the season it seemed like the Sabercats trusted Vick Bowers Jr more. Their run game did not prove to be enough for a playoff bracket though as the Sabercats only went 4-10. Both had mutual options this upcoming offseason so it would’ve been interesting to see if they would’ve opted in or leave to get more opportunities to prove themselves. Wiley had more incentive to leave but his shocking retirement gave Vick Bowers Jr more reason to stay. With Wiley gone Bowers will possibly get the chance to carry the Sabercats on his back and prove that he has the skill to be the man on a team. If Vick Bowers Jr. decides to opt out of his contract then the San Jose Sabercats might have to go full on rebuild mode. They will have to turn to the draft to find their workhorse on offense. If Bowers wants to be the face of a franchise then he should stay with the Sabercats. They have yet to gain an identity in San Jose and that is needed to build a contender.

The rest of the free agents will likely be picked up after the season two draft as a lot of them are mostly role players that HAD to be starters. With an influx of great talent in the draft, the same cannot be said for the upcoming season. Since the leftover free agents were mostly inactive then the only reason they will be picked up will be if they are holes to fill because if this season showed us anything it’s that everything and everybody is better than a “bot.”
