*Its a Sweets life - revuhlution - 02-17-2020

San Diego, CA - Growing up in Jacksonville, FL wasn't particularly easy for Chester Sweets. One of 6 brothers and sisters, his mother and father both worked multiple jobs to provide for the kids. James usually worked as a janitor at a few local schools and businesses and Janice taught preschool during the week and waited tables on the weekends. The Sweets kids stuck together, which once meant multiple siblings were expelled from their local school district for a fight, forcing the family to move.

The 6 kids played sports. Alot. Often two or three of the Sweets kids were on the same team. Once, 5 of the 6 Sweets kids were on the same soccer team (they won the league championship and had a 17-1 record). As much as they worked, however, James and Janice were on the fields and courts with the kids, often co-coaching. "I got used to calling my mom and dad 'Coach' because we were always with our teams," Chester remembers.

Chester grew up playing everything, but focused on football. "Basketball and baseball were fun. We all played. But football was the place where I could be myself. I could hit someone and take their head off? I was in."

Chester was a highly-touted WR and CB coming out of the competitive Jacksonville area in high school. He led his team in touchdowns, interceptions, and tackles his last three years.

When prospective colleges started knocking on his door, most coaches wanted him to play wide receiver for their program. Chester was of a different mind. "At cornerback, you're out there by yourself. One mistake and, boom, the game changes. You always have to be on your toes. But that big risk can always see a big reward!"

Despite the opportunities and background of the many interested Florida programs, Chester found himself drawn to San Diego State. "The weather was like home. But I wanted something different. I ran into a bunch of different stuff out there. The West Coast is a different experience, man. But I'm ready to go wherever wants me. Believe that."

Sweets is looking to catch on with a DSFL team, where he sees himself as a worthwhile project. "I've got work to do. But I've been doing work, too. Wherever I go, they won't be disappointed in my work ethic." He sees his all-around style as fitting in anywhere. "I can do it all; man-to-man, zone, nickel, blitz, run. I find the ball and its mine." Despite the hard work ahead of him, he remains optimistic:

"One thing's for sure. Its a Sweets life."
