*A look at the S21 NSFL First Round - RotticusScott - 03-01-2020

Well folks, we’re at about 30 hours since the National Simulation Football League draft. Everyone is settling into their locker rooms, excitement is alive in every single team chat, and the GM’s are finishing up all of their contract negotiations. What better time than now to do a little grading of the team’s first round picks!

Round 1, Pick 1. Orange County Otters OCO
Prince Vegeta, Safety, Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
Grade: A

I mean, is it possible to really grade this? Vegeta has been by far the most active player in the S21 draft class, and is a name recognized by most (if he kept it as Jeffrey LaVert, it might be all). Jeffrey came into the draft boasting the highest TPE count (259) in the class, and really was a no brainer at first overall. Normally I’d give this pick an A+, but it’s such a slam dunk pick I really can’t.

Round 1 Pick 2. San Jose Sabercats SJS
Otis Allen, Defensive Tackle, Portland Pythons
Grade: B

1,061 words
Another good pick here, although I feel the Pythons might have been able to get Otis at 4th. This is not to say Otis isn’t deserving of the slot he was picked in, though. He’s racked up 230 TPE, which makes him the highest earning DT in the DSFL. This could be a move to make San Jose’s defensive line truly dominant, as they already boast outstanding gap pluggers out front.

Round 1 Pick 3. Philadelphia Liberty PHI
Juniped Catfish, Running Back, Norfolk Seawolves
Grade: B

Now, many have been calling this pick a reach. I tend to agree that drafting Juni at 3rd overall is a bit of a reach, but only because there were higher TPE options around at the time. Juni went into draft day with 179 TPE, nothing to sneeze at, and put up a monstrous season for the Seawolves. After losing some players to injury during the season, Juni shouldered the load and put up 1,000+ yards and 9 touchdowns. Drafting Juni as a person will end up being a great move for the Liberty. Juni is one of my closest friends in this league, and the spirit he brings to Philly will one hundred percent be worth the high draft pick.

Round 1 Pick 4, San Jose Sabercats SJS
HEhateme Picksix, Cornerback, Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
Grade: A

Another knockout pick here in the first round, and the 2nd Myrtle Beach player off the board. San Jose is in dire need of defensive backs, and they got a great one here. Picksix was the highest TPE corner in the draft sporting 211 TPE on draft day, and was a part of the historic Buccaneer no fly zone. Picksix can be boisterous, but being a cornerback that should be nothing new in the NSFL.

Round 1 Pick 5, Baltimore Hawks. BAL
Chris Kross, Wide Reciever, Kansas City Koyotes
Grade: A

Another great pick here in the first! Baltimore had a need at wide receiver going into the next few seasons, and Kross totally fills that hole. His stats in the DSFL weren’t stellar, but as we all know the sim can be a fickle partner. He did put up a monster 226 TPE, making him among the top earners in the season 21 class. All in all, another no brainer pick here.

Round 1 Pick 6, Chicago Butchers CHI
Otis Firestorm-Fjord, Tight End,
Grade:A

Round one did not see too many reaches, and that continues with Firestorm-Fjord going sixth to the Butchers. Fjord was the top earning tight end for season 21, amassing 226 TPE. Chicago has a lot of needs, as they’re currently in a rebuilding phase, and Fjord will fit that need at tight end. Another no brainer, another slam dunk.

Round 1 Pick 7, Colorado Yeti COL
Immanuel Blackstone, Defensive End, Tijuana Luchadores
Grade:A
?Here we have what may be the pick of the first round, if not the draft. Blackstone somehow slid to 7th overall while boasting 241 TPE! This has him tied with running back Dax Frost, and safety Matt Murphy. He will look to bring Colorado its first ultimus win, being the newest addition to a studded defense.

Round 1 Pick 8, New Orleans Second Line NOLA
Dorfus Jimbo Jr., Defensive End, Norfolk Seawolves
Grade:C

This pick is a bit more confusing. Dorfus Jimbo came into the draft as the 5th ranked defensive end at 146 TPE. It’s not that bad of a pick, but if we’re looking at pure TPE numbers its quite the insane reach. Jimbo does have some friends on New Orleans, and is quite active around the league, so this could just be a people pick instead of a TPE pick. Also, Jimbo is the current general manager of the Norfolk Seawolves, so he will always have a steady flow of cash coming in for his workouts and equipment purchases. Again, not a bad pick, Just more talent to have at this point in the draft is all.

Round 1 Pick 9, Yellowknife Wraiths YKW
Doug Quaid, Linebacker, Kansas City Coyotes
Grade: A

Another great pick in the first round here. Quaid is the top earning linebacker with 210 TPE, and will look to build an even stronger linebacking corps in Yellowknife. There wasn’t necessarily a huge need at linebacker for the Wraiths, but Quaid could be taking a spot somewhere else in the defense, or learning the big league speed of the game from the Yellowknife veterans.

Round 1 Pick 10 Austin Copperheads AUS
Riles McTackle, Defensive End, Kansas City Coyotes
Grade: B

This pick is another “reach” if we’re talking TPE, but a great pick in terms of person. Riles is active in a ton of different places, and should become a great gap plugger for the ultimus winning Copperheads. Also, the Copperheads drafted Holden Summers later on in the draft, who is a known golf buddy of Riles. This pick will look to create an even stronger culture in Austin, and keep them competing for seasons to come.

In summation, this was a great 1st round. Some surprises and confusing picks, but also all the big knockout players went where they were expected to. Although next draft’s class is going to be even more stacked than this one, you can look at season 21’s draft class to compete in the league for years to come.
