*Ultimus Factoids - Raven - 03-01-2020

With 20 seasons behind us we have had our fair share of ultimus play. With all that play comes enough very fun factoids. For those unaware the Ultimus is the creme the la creme of trophies. The top of the top. The award that one team wins after a long NSFL season, going through the playoffs and winning it all.

To start things off let us have a look at the past winners of this prestine award. So for those unaware the ASFC has been the dominant conference when it comes to winning the Ultimus. Out of the 20 Ultimus awarded so far, 16 of them have gone to a team from the ASFC. The first winner out of the ASFC was the Arizona Outlaws who won the award in Season 1. The last winner out of the ASFC are the Austin Copperheads which won it this was season which ofcourse was season 20.

On the opposite side of that spectrum is the NSFC, who as a collective have won a total of 4 ultimus awards. The first winner out of the NSFC was the Phildadelphia who won it in Season 7. The last winner out of the NSFC are the Baltimore Hawks who won it back in season 15.

So let's have a look at which teams have all won an Ultimus per conference.

ASFC (16 wins)

- Orange County Otters (8 wins/50%)
- Arizona Outlaws (4 wins/25%)
- New Orleans Second Line (2 wins/12.5%)
- San Jose Sabercats (1 win/6.25%)
- Austin Copperheads (1 win/6.25%)

The dominant force within the ASFC is the Orange County Otters who have been a consistant playoff contender, having never missed out on reaching the playoffs. With 20 playoff apperences they have won a cup in 40% of those apperences.

The outlaws are a differnt story. They had a very dominant start in the NSFC, winning the cup in 3 back to back years. Then fell off until they won another cup in S16.

New Orleans had a dominant streak between S9 - S12. Making it into the finals 4 season in a row and winning 2 cups in that frame.

The Sabercats had a stint in S15 and S16 in whicht they made the final back to back. Winning a cup in one of those finals.

The newest team in the ASFC are the Austin Copperheads who have climbed up and won a cup within their first 5 seasons in the league. This was also their only apperences in a final so far.

NSFC (4 wins)

- Baltimore Hawks (2 wins/50%)
- Philadelphia Liberty (1 win/25%)
- Yellowknife Wraiths (1 win/25%)

The Hawks are the opposite of the Otters in a way. They have won 2 cup which are the most cup wins by a NSFC team, however they have also visited 8 finals. Rocking a .250 win percentage in fianls.

Philadelphia Liberty are the first team to win a Ultimus on the road and that's where that ends. They have made the finals on 4 differnt occasions in two differnt stints S6-S7 and S14 & S16.

Yellowknife feels the same pain as the Hawks with 1 win in 6 final apperances. 3 of those apperances have been in the last 3 seasons and they have been unlucky not to win one in those 3 apperances.

Now that was a bit of a very wordy and not very facty, but still things I thought were interesting to share.

So let's move on to more fun factoid stuff.

- The Philadephia Liberty are the only team in the NSFL to have won a cup on the road and never a cup at home. Which they did in their S7 campaign versus the Otters.

- Talking about winning cups on the road and the Otters. The Orange County Otters are the only other to besides the Liberty to have won a cup on the road. Which they did in 3 back to back seasons (S17/S18/S19).

- In the history of the Ultimus there has only been 1 blowout victory. Which was in the S15 final between the Baltimore Hawks and the San Jose Saberscats in a 49-0 win for the Hawks.

- S11 has the only ultimus final that has gone to Overtime. The New Orleans Second Line beat the Baltimore Hawks 36-42 after a heavy back and forward. With both teams making 3 offensive moves.

- The Orange County Otters, the New Orleans Second Line and the Baltimore Hawks are the only teams to make a final in 4 back to back years. The Otters did it between (S4-S7), the Second Line between (S8-S11) and the Hawks between (S9-S12).

- This means that the finals between S9-S11 were between the Baltimore Hawks and the New Orleans Second Line. Making these the only two teams to have played in 3 back to back finals against each other. NOLA would win 2 cups (S9 & S11) and the Hawks would win 1 cup (S10).

- There have been a fair share of pick 6's in Ultimus finals. 5 finals saw a team record a pick 6. (S1, S3, S12, S14, S16).

- A pick 6 was the first ever points scored in an Ultimus. In S1 the Arizona Outlaws beat the Colorado Yeti 29-6 after Ryan Flock intercepted QB Logan Noble in the 5th minute of the game for a 24 yard interception and with that the first ever points scored in the ultimus.

- S3 was the only season with a final with multiple pick 6's. Baltimore QB Kyubee was intercepted 5 times on the day with 2 of those picks returned for 6 points.

- There are currently 2 teams with a 100% win rate in the Ultimus. The first is the Arizona Outlaws with final apperances and cup wins in S1, S2, S3 and S16. The other is the Austin Copperheads who have only appeared in one final and won a cup in it. (S20).

- The only team to have never made a finals apperances are the Chicago Butchers.

- The Orange County Otters and the Arizona Outlaws are the only two teams to win back to back finals. Arizona did it in S1/S2/S3. Orange County in S4/S5/S6, S12/S13 and S17/S18/S19.

- There have been 3 blocked punts recorded in Ultimus history. The first blocked punt was in S02 by Arizona Outlaw Player A.Davis. This feat wouldn't be repeated until S15 when Baltimore Hawks player Declan Harp blocked a punt and the last instance of a blocked punt was in S16 when Philadelphia player D.Bohne pulled it off.

- The only punt return for a touchdown in history was by Vladymir Fyodorovich of the New Orleans Second Line who returned a punt for 50 yards in S11.

- Only one player has scored a kicker return touchdown. That player is Josh Garden and did so in back to back years (S6 & S7)

- There has only been one player who ended an Ultimus game with a negative reception yards. In S4 Bubba Nuck had one reception for -1 yards.

- The biggest punter showdown in Ultimus history came in sesaon 03 when Turk Turkleton and Cristiano Ronaldo collectively punted 25 times for 1146 yards. Both punted inside the 20 twice and Turk had a long of 65 and Cristiano had a long of 66 yards. Turk would end up having 11 punts for 499 yards and Ronaldo 14 for 647 yards. To this day these two preformances are the 1st and 2nd in ultimus punts and yards.
