Introduction:
This is the first of several scouting reports that I’ll be writing on this upcoming DSFL draft class of DTs. Considering that they are a deciding factor on whether or not your defense would be able to make a stop in either the running or passing game, with their ability to shut down the quarterback with sacks, assisting the DEs, putting pressure on the O-Line, or stopping the run with tackles, along with their placement on the line of scrimmage. Defensive tackles are an important position that every DSFL GM should be looking for on their draft board. This series of reports will be written so that DSFL GMs won’t need to look far to determine which of the DTs in the upcoming draft class will fit their needs best. Now, without further ado, here is my scouting report on the DT out of the University of Notre Dame, Phat Boi.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
As an Interior Rusher, Phat Boi is the smallest type of defensive tackle, despite his name. This means that he’ll have to prioritize on maintaining his speed, as opposed to maintaining his strength and/or either his tackling or his agility, as to make an attempt to sack the quarterback. He has above-average strength, which is not necessary but good for a Defensive Tackle of his archetype, as it won’t increase their speed in getting to the quarterback faster, but it does make beating their blocker a little bit easier. He has above-average agility for a DT, which makes it easier for him to complete complex pass rushing moves, such as the spin. Along with this, he has below-average intelligence, which makes it harder for him to shift his focus from pass-rushing moves in order to assist the run defense. This’ll also make him more prone to flags. His below average tackling also poses a problem, but is understandable due to his high strength. He has very above-average speed for a DT, which fits his interior rusher archetype. He also has average hands for a DT, which means that he’ll be adequate, but only adequate in shedding a blocker’s grip, or escaping holds to make them more prominent. His average endurance means that he’ll be gassed after games, but not to the extent in which he won’t be able to play his position. He does seem to be well-rounded enough to the point where he won’t have to worry about making too much of an attempt to cover his weaknesses.

Pro Comparison:

A good comparison for Phat Boi would have to be the former DT from the Buffalo Bills, Ed Oliver. Both Phat Boi and Oliver are too big to be edge rushers, but still relatively small for DTs, which allows them to have better success rushing at a QB in a straight line. Oliver still relied on his force to reach QBs through the middle, and so does Phat Boi. I’d consider Oliver to be his floor. As for his ceiling, I believe that would have to be Fletcher Cox. Cox is a bit bigger than both Phat Boi and Oliver, but still relatively undersized, but is also very capable at defending against the run and applying pressure, instead of just hunting for sacks, making him a true jack-of-all-trades for his position. I believe that Phat Boi can reach this level at some point in his career, and I think he will. He has a low floor of Ed Oliver, but a median ceiling of Fletcher Cox.

Extras:
- 6’1”, a bit small height-wise for a Defensive Tackle. Might not be a skilled pressure guy right off the bat.
- 300 lbs, which is average for a Defensive Tackle. Should prioritize rushing schemes or being labeled as a blitzer. Phat Boi is not very fat at all, despite his nomme de guerre.
- Faced and conquered adversity as a child, which suggests good character.
- Almost won the Heisman in college. Is over-performing in relation to the careers of the historical runner-ups to the award.
- Right-Handed
- Born in Hawaii, went to college at Notre Dame.
- Great work-ethic.

Conclusion:
If the GM that drafts him with whatever pick they use was looking to get a Phat Boi out of the pick, then they’ll be disappointed, as Phat Boi is actually undersized for his position. Instead, they’ll be getting a Strong Boi, or a Very-Efficient-For-His-Position Boi, or the classic “Safe-Pick Boi”. (funny) I think that his build of DT will succeed in the pros, and will usher in a revolution of size at the DT position led by Phat Boi himself. He’ll generate a higher number of sacks and TFLs as an interior rusher than he would a nose tackle or balanced DT. I think he’ll be the first DT off the board, in part due to his particular build’s tendency to have an early pick perennially. He’s a player with a low floor, but a median ceiling, which means he’ll have some work to do as a pro.
