Recently graduated Julio Tirtawidjaja was picked at No. 244 overall by the Tijuana Luchadores at the DSFL Draft held this past Thursday. The third running back drafted by the Luchadores, Tirtawidjaja, will be competing with the likes of fellow rookie Richard Gilbert to be starter Ed Barker's backup ahead of the upcoming DSFL season.
The Gretna High School alumni started his career at Nebraska as a walk-on and scout team player as a freshman before getting playing time as a special teamer and later in the season as running back in his sophomore year. Tirtawidjaja's performance in the postseason helped the Huskers win the Rose Bowl in his sophomore year. His junior season saw Tirtawidjaja rushing for 5,000 yards and 15 touchdowns with 800 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns. Tirtawidjaja followed that up with an amazing senior year performance, rushing for 6,500 yards and receiving for 1,500 yards with 38 total touchdowns. Finished with his supply chain management degree, Tirtawidjaja decided to forego his last year of eligibility and enter the DSFL draft.
Projected to be picked in the top 50, Tirtawidjaja dropped to the late rounds due to his lack of activity and updates ahead of the draft due to him being back in Indonesia dealing with personal matters. The former Husker walk-on was able to arrive back in the United States just in time for the Prospect Bowl and had a decent showing for the New York Poodles.
Tirtawidjaja will most likely be deployed as a change-of-pace back to support returning starter Ed Barker. His ability, in addition to running through tackles and beating linebackers outside, to catch the ball will surely be an asset the Luchadores can use to exploit spaces in the middle and also to serve as an additional receiver.
