*DSFL Week One Recap - benstackinpaper - 03-14-2020

The first game of the S21 DSFL Season featured the Portland Pythons visiting the Norfolk Seawolves. This game got out of hand early as the two-headed monster at running back of Flash Panda and Tequila Sunrise combined for 43 carriers and 201 yards as the moved the ball effortlessly against the Pythons defense, but the pair did not score any touchdowns. The Seawolves used two quarterbacks to throw three touchdowns in the win; two of them caught by tight end Reynaud Haugland, his only two receptions in the game. Portland had a chance to seize some momentum before the half with the ball on the Norfolk side of the field but could not get into scoring position and took a 28-3 deficit into the locker room. The one bright spot for the Pythons was defensive end Logan Noble Jr who had 8 tackles (5 for loss) and a sack but ultimately his team would lose 31-9. Defensively for Norfolk safety Matt "Son of Havoc" Cross lived up to his name getting a sack and pick six in this blowout.

In our 2nd game we saw another one-sided affair. The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers only needed 91 passing yards to easily beat the Kansas City Coyotes in a game that was not as close as the 24-9 final. Running back Dax Frost for the Buccaneers rushed 25 times for 6.6 yards per carry (164 yards) and his backfield teammate J.B. Apollo who was drafted 136th overall this year added a clean 100 yards on 20 carriers with a touchdown. The Coyotes were in great position to take hold of this game early when safety Cosmo Cramer picked off Chris Ramos and returned it into MB territory. The Buccaneers defense would hold KC to a field goal and the Coyotes would punt or turn the ball over six straight possessions as Myrtle Beach moved the ball effortlessly down the field. Sean O'Donohue had 10 tackles and a sack to lead the KC defense in the loss.

The 3rd matchup of the week was defensive battle which saw the Minnesota Grey Ducks defeat the Tijuana Luchadores 19-16. Minnesota got the win despite their quarterbacks combining to complete 9/23 passes (39%). The kickers for each team combined to account for 23 points with Cashrinski blödenheimer of the Grey Ducks getting the game winner as time expired (13 points to Luchadores kicker Jacob Small’s 10 points). Defensively linebacker Lawrence Bass was all over the field for the Ducks with 15 tackles, Buck Thornton had 7 tackles with 2 sacks while corner back Bo Jangles had 3 passes defended. For Tijuana, linebacker Devaunte Sackpieder did what he could with an interception, sack, pass defended and 4 tackles, but the Luchador defense allowed one too many scores in this one. Penalties were the story of the game for Tijuana as 7 of them for 65 yards kept them from capitalizing on a plus two turnover differential.

The final game of the week pitted the two expansion franchises against one another although only the London Royals actually showed up in the 34-7 win over the Dallas Birddogs. Workhorse back Acura Skyline carried the ball 37 times for 143 yards rushing. The 25th overall pick in this draft added 22-yard kick return on special teams. Skyline did not need much help on offense but tight end Donatello Arrabiata and running back Jacoby Batista added touchdowns in the blow out. Quinn Hughes got the scoring started with a 22 yd interception return touchdown for the first points in franchise history. Hughes picked 41st in the draft had a monster game adding two sacks, a safety and a pass defended to his pick six. Linebacker Derred de Ville chipped in 8 tackles, 3 sacks and a pass defended to help lead the defense. For Dallas running back White Goodman would score the lone points for the Birddogs early in the third quarter but the would be their lone offensive highlight as Dallas could only manage 3 yards per carry during the contest.

Offensive player of the week award goes to Dax Frost of Myrtle Beach for his 164 yards rushing on 25 carries against Kansas City. Defensive player of the week award goes to Quinn Hughes of the London Royals for his 2 sacks, safety, interception and touchdown against Dallas.
