*Sofa Breaks Fever and Gets Off Bench - NamelessNate - 03-19-2020

As we have followed for a lot of the season, Tom Sofa is now officially a COVID-36 survivor. After a long battle with the virus which removed the young star from weeks 1 and 2 of the DSFL season, Sofa has finally tested 'Negative,' was cleared by team doctors and allowed to resume football activity. Upon his return to the team locker room he was met with many cheers and high fives, the team seemingly forgetting all about the viral outbreak and instead cheering with their short time friend. Now it was thought that after the sickness made Sofa lose nearly 10 pounds that he would need a period of adjustment for him to get his football legs under him. The coaches were prepared to let him sit for 8 more weeks as the freshly recovered QB rehabbed and learned the playbook, however this is not what happened.

We all remember that the cause of this whole outbreak was a Minnesota family brought it to Myrtle Beach in the pre-season, and it has widely been suspected that it was intentional that they got Tom Sofa sick. It is no coincidence that the first game after becoming healthy would be against the Minnesota Grey Ducks, except this time in their house. In pre-game warm-ups Tom showed determination and grit that you would expect from a college senior playing his rival on the road. All of his passes were crisp, his drop backs quick and his check downs correct. He was a man on a mission of revenge. The coaches saw this and decided to manifest this energy into something positive for the team, but they weren't sure how. They used it as motivation for the starter, Chris Ramos, to play at his peak, bluffing that they may sit him a few drives if he were not up to par. Little did they know that Ramos would indeed not be up to par.

The first two quarters were rough on Myrtle Beach. The artificial crowd noises (gatherings of 100 or more people still banned in Minnesota, only essential team personnel and broadcasters were allowed entry) got into the heads of the players and it is suspected that the speakers actually exceeded the recommended 120 dB on opposing team plays, however you and I both know that a team with the caliber of Minnesota would not stoop down to the level of cheating. Minnesota has only the cleanest of noses (except the ones that infected Tom of course!) and it is all just hearsay anyway. No matter the noise, the Buccaneers had a rough first half and ended up down 13-3 after a FG to end the half. In the locker room a decision was made, to get Tom off of the Couch and let him take snaps on the field.

The second half started with Minnesota receiving the ball, taking a 5 minute drive for yet another field goal, bringing the score to 16-3. Myrtle beach responded the only way they knew how, giving Mr. 271 his first snaps. His first play as a professional football player was a 7 yard toss to the right on a cross route! All was great except the hands on the receiver who dropped the ball. Thinking he was shaken up the coaching staff pulled him off of the field and gave him a slap on the shoulder pad and sent him back out, while that was all happening Ramos threw an incomplete pass that really should have been an interception. Now it being 3rd and 10 the Buccaneers called the only play they knew would guarantee the a first down. Tom Sofa snapped the ball, dropped back 3 steps and handed it off to Frost for a 10 yard run. Feeling a little rush after his first big league first down Sofa quick snapped the next play, forgot what routes his receivers were running, saw nobody open and took a 6 yard sack. He was pulled again and then Myrtle Beach ended up punting.

A quick lecture was had for both QBs on the sideline as the coaches really couldn't tell who was ready to play out there, but the lecture was cut short as the Grey Ducks threw an interception and a quick decision as made to put Ramos back in, thinking that perhaps after his period of illness Sofa was not ready or adjusted to the pace of a DSFL game. Ramos found himself driving to close out the 3rd quarter, but had an awkward fall on a pass in the red zone, giving Sofa another chance to shine and that he did. The very next play Sofa took advantage of the opportunity and threw a 1 yard touchdown pass to Despacito Jr! The whole team took the field to celebrate as the corona kid Mr. 271 made his first professional score and boy what an impressive one it was! Unfortunately it would be the last score the Buccaneers made that game but it was a statement score, the player that got handed out to the last team like a penalty, the player selectively given the coronavirus, the player that no one had faith in was able to show up. Even though he finished 6/8 for 58 yards he was still the most impressive quarterback in the game and he earned his spot in the league and on the field.

Even though they had lost that day, the Buccaneers were able to celebrate with the rookie QB and even lead chants of "2-7-1, 2-7-1" and "Corona Corona Corona." It was truly breathtaking to see the incredible amount of support in the locker room for him. However a new week was now ahead of them and the team now had to prepare a playbook and style for a 2 QB system. Practice throughout the week was hard for both QBs as now they have an all new chemistry to build not only off of the receivers, but each other as well. When one started to under preform the other would know to go in and pick up where the other left off. At the end of the week they were ready to take on the London kitty kats Royals and fully expected the W they were about to recieve.

Unfortunately for both of them they were unable to send any major waves throughout the first half as it was completely the Frost and Apollo show ft. Ramos and Sofa. This did not discourage either quarterback because they knew that they would come into the game run-first in order to take advantage of a rather porous defense that belonged to the Royals. At half time the score read 14-7 in favor of our favorite team and all was thought to be well until the first drive of the second half. The Royals scored on a quick 3 minute drive and pressure started to build on the buccaneer offense. Before the ensuing kickoff Sofa went to the returner Alyx Sabor, patted him on the shoulder and reassured him that "he had this."

Now you see a true team player is not only able to produce results as a direct product of his play, but his presence as well. All it took for Sabor to be emboldened was a reassuring pat from the true king of this field, Tom Sofa. The kick landed just outside of the endzone on the 4 yard line forcing Sabor to return it. Thinking about the confidence the corona kid had instilled in him he found a small gap on the right side, squeezed through it and fired up the sideline for a 96 yard touchdown return! This would put the kitty kats Royals completely out of the game as they would not score for the remainder of it. The score would end up 14-27 with team captain Dax Frost scoring 2 touchdowns. Sofa would yet again be the best quarterback featured in the game as even though he only connected on 5 out of his 9 pass attempts, he would amass 82 yards and end with a passer rating of 86.3.

Another quality of a true team player is when to know to be humble, because even though his cannon was the best to fire that day, he knew all credit belonged to his running backs and his linemen. This time he was the one to lead chants that belonged to his teammates and was even seen taking his O-Line out to a private buffet after the game.

The comeback story of the 271st pick just keeps getting richer and richer as each week he makes marked improvements towards becoming the best QB in the league. His incredible comeback story is only enhanced by his battle with COVID-36 and his recovery from the deadly disease. Only time will tell what will happen to the young corona kid, but all signs are pointing in a "positive" direction.

DISCLAIMER: Sofa has 100% indeed been tested negative for the Coronavirus. The rumors of him spreading it to the league are completely false and anyone perpetuating them a liar. As he is now recovered from it he is immune to it and no longer able to be a carrier of the disease. If anyone else in the league catches it, blame the dirty birds of Minnesota and their completely revolting fan base.
