*What a Wonder(lic)ful World - KoltClassic - 03-26-2020

There was some discussion on discord earlier today about the scouting combines and Wonderlic tests, so I decided to look at the numbers a bit closer. This will be pretty brief, but I think the data is interesting nonetheless. I’m going to try to avoid duplicating any information directly available on the Wiki like top scores. If you’d like to learn more about the scouting combine data overall, go here. You can also view individual seasons at pages like this.

As of the S21 scouting combine there have been 1142 Wonderlic tests taken. Here are the averages by position:

Some random stats:

- By position, running backs have the lowest Wonderlic scores on average and quarterbacks have the highest.
- 41% of all RBs ( 49 / 120 ) score a 3 on the Wonderlic.
- The lowest non-RB Wonderlic score is 12. This is a 101-way tie that is mostly filled with WRs and defensive lineman.
- The highest Wonderlic by an RB was Seth Wallace in the season 8 combine with a score of 30.
- The highest non-QB Wonderlic was 43 by A.C. Hackett, a LB in the season 1 combine.

Quarterbacks start with the highest average intelligence by archetype with 3 of their 4 archetypes starting with 65 intelligence ( mobile QBs start with 60 ).

Running backs start with the lowest average intelligence. Power backs and speed back start with 30 intelligence, all-purpose backs with 35, receiving backs with 40, and blocking backs start with 45.

I don’t have the exact numbers on hand, but judging by the archetype names I’m assuming that options like “blocking back” are less sought after and therefore have been less likely to be chosen.

Per the “what each attribute does” topic , intelligence is not listed as a high priority for most positions besides quarterback and is therefore not focused on by most positions prior to their rookie season in the NSFL.

I definitely didn’t write this to rake in those media bucks, but I’d be happy to run numbers and add to these stats if people are curious about any other queries.
