Deepest position: Cornerback
This one is pretty obvious. Even with 18 active members in the S22 Cornerback class, they still boast the third highest TPE average by position. There are nine corners boasting 180 TPE or higher, and the next five are all at 135+.
Shallowest position: Defensive End
Outside of the typically skimpy position groups (OL, TE, K/P), Defensive End is glaringly low in talent, especially compared to the other defensive positions. The twelve active ends entering the draft rank 8th in average TPE, barely edging out the eight offensive linemen. The top-5 defensive ends only average 178.6 TPE, which is eighth-best, and only higher than TE, OL, and K/P.
Takeaways:
The understatement of the season is that this is a stacked draft class. But this class is STACKED. Just the ACTIVE players make up 11 full rounds. There is already almost an entire round of 200 TPE players (11 at the moment) and there will likely be two full rounds of 200 TPE players by the time the draft rolls around. Top-tier cornerbacks could be available until the late rounds, there are four to six valuable QB’s (depending on future activity), and potential Hall-of-Famers at each position group.
Strategy will be extremely important in such an immense class. Will teams take the top earners and fit them in or trade them for capital? Will teams prioritize their needs? Maybe trade down? Teams have the opportunity to turn into a contender in a single draft, or saddle themselves with dead-weight for seasons to come.
