*A TPE Look into the S21 DSFL Draft - FurFurFurson - 03-31-2020 As a Grey Duck, this has been a very disappointing season. There has been a lot of discussion in the locker room about what has gone wrong. Then, while I was researching my Positional TPE article, I noticed that Minnesota does not have many players at the top of their position group. After the draft, the feeling in the Minnesota LR was that we had a very good draft, but the numbers were not reflecting that. So I decided to do a little more digging into the S21 DSFL Draft. Here are my findings: There are 124 draftees in the S22 class that are currently active (as of 3/28 when I researched my Positional TPE article). Here is a team-by-team breakdown of the currently active S22 draftees (note: this does not include waiver pickups, only players drafted in the S21 DSFL Draft): Dallas Birddogs: 18 1. R25 - James Carson, 69 TPE 244. R31 - Julio Tirtawidjaja, 137 TPE 260. R33 - Nat Wright, 90 TPE Dallas has the most active class, with 18 active draftees. Kansas City has the fewest active members at 12. Both teams are in good position for the playoffs. Let’s take a quick look at the draftees who went inactive. Inactive Draftees: 147 Dallas: 25 London: 20 Kansas City: 18 Myrtle Beach: 18 Norfolk: 18 Tijuana: 17 Portland: 16 Minnesota: 15 Active Percentage: 124/271 - 45.8% Portland: 16/32 - 50% Tijuana: 17/34 - 50% Myrtle Beach: 17/35 - 48.6% Minnesota: 14/29 - 48.3% London: 16/36 - 44.4% Norfolk: 14/32 - 43.8% Dallas: 18/43 - 41.9% Kansas City: 12/30 - 40% Dallas has the most amount of inactive players, along with the most active players. The Birddogs definitely went for quantity in this draft and it paid off. Kansas City has the lowest percentage of active draftees, but that hasn’t phased the Coyotes. No team eclipsed 50% for draft class activity, but in such a large class, it’s impressive that Portland and Tijuana retained 50% activity. Both teams are poised to make the playoffs. Quality and Quantity? Obviously quality is more important than quantity, so let’s look at who drafted the highest quality of players. Average Active Draftee TPE: 145.6 Dallas: 165.94 Kansas City: 156.33 London: 149.69 Myrtle Beach: 147.65 Portland: 144.13 Norfolk: 138.29 Tijuana: 133.94 Minnesota: 126.29 This is where Minnesota’s struggles are glaringly obvious. At only 126.3 TPE per active draftee, the Grey Ducks are a full 7 TPE per player behind the next closest team, Tijuana. Dallas had an extremely good draft, blowing everyone out of the water, including Kansas City, who should be very happy with getting 156.3 TPE per active player. Draft Trends While I was at it, I decided to look at some trends in the draft. This is the average TPE per round, only taking into account players considered active. Obviously the later rounds get thrown off by smaller sample size, but I thought I would include all the rounds because I found it interesting. Average TPE per round (active players): Round 1: 205.5 Round 2: 194.75 Round 3: 177.38 Round 4: 173.5 Round 5: 191.14 Round 6: 162 Round 7: 161.71 Round 8: 165 Round 9: 118.29 Round 10: 139.5 Round 11: 109.38 Round 12: 119.86 Round 13: 113.25 Round 14: 109.67 Round 15: 113.75 Round 16: 116.5 Round 17: 93.75 Round 18: 90 Round 19: 139 Round 20: 137 Round 21: 81.5 Round 22: n/a Round 23: 190 Round 24: n/a Round 25: 69 Round 26: 74.5 Round 27: n/a Round 28: 81 Round 29: n/a Round 30: n/a Round 31: 137 Round 32: n/a Round 33: 76 Round 34: 161 Round 5 really stands out here, although the first inactive player of the class was drafted in this round. The seven remaining players, led by Jeffrey Phillips and Brandon Booker, boast a 191 TPE average, almost as high as Round 2. Dead Rounds (no active players): 22, 24, 27, 29, 30, 32 Highest TPE Pick per Round: Round 1: KC - Phat Boi - 236 TPE Round 2: DAL - White Goodman - 221 TPE Round 3: DAL - Stanislaw Koniecpolski - 229 TPE Round 4: LON - Acura Skyline - 199 TPE Round 5: DAL - Jeffrey Phillips - 228 TPE Round 6: DAL - William Lim - 197 TPE Round 7: KC - Michael Witheblock - 191 TPE Round 8: DAL - Kichwa Jones - 196 TPE Round 9: KC - Fawn Dillmiballs - 171 TPE Round 10: KC - Matthew McDairmid - 176 TPE Round 11: KC - Patrik Money - 175 TPE Round 12: TIJ - Richard Gilbert - 172 TPE Round 13: TIJ - LiterallyJust A. The Birddogs drafted the top TPE earning player in 8 of the 34 rounds (23.5%!!!). Portland and Norfolk did not draft the top TPE earner in any round. While in many cases, picking the lowest TPE earner in any round is in no way a burden to the team, in other cases it is, due to a player staying active with a low TPE and requiring playing time due to DSFL rules. (This section is in no way meant to throw shade at anyone). Lowest TPE Pick per Round (active players): Round 1: TIJ - Ben Slothlisberger - 184 TPE Round 2: POR - Alexander Hamilton II - 143 TPE Round 3: KC - Kevin Fakon - 117 TPE Round 4: TIJ - Ozamataz Buckshank - 109 TPE Round 5: MIN - William Alexander - 166 TPE Round 6: TIJ - Devaunte Sackpieder - 97 TPE Round 7: MIN - Mario VonPebbles - 120 TPE Round 8: KC - Ismael Sanchez - 113 TPE Round 9: MIN - Ricky Boomhauer - 59 TPE Round 10: POR - Pseudo QB - 59 TPE Round 11: MB - Jorcher Minor - 60 TPE Round 12: LON - Blake Alexander - 74 TPE Round 13: MIN - Sim Snowbow - 85 TPE Round 14: LON - Ed Ball - 85 TPE Round 15: MIN - Samuel L. The Grey Ducks drafted the lowest TPE earning player (who is still active) in six rounds, twice the rate of Tijuana, Kansas City, and Myrtle Beach. While some of this may be attributable to Minnesota holding the last pick in many rounds, just as much blame can be placed on bad luck. London, while not having the best draft, shows their solidity here, taking the lowest earner in only round 12. Pick Value I need to preface this next section by saying I am not a statistician. I finagled a way to determine the value of each player proportional to where in the draft the player was picked. The formula is rudimentary, but I believe the results match what people would consider “late-round steals” and “busts”. Highest Value Picks: TIJ - Round 23, Pick 180 - Jim Waters - 190 TPE Siddhus was met with a lot of skepticism coming into this draft. However, he was true to his word, and took off on his TPE, earning 190 to date. Landing a max-earner in the 23rd round is a dream come true. DAL - Round 19, Pick 147 - Colt Mendoza - 180 TPE The first of three Birddogs in this section, Mendoza was a diamond in the rough late rounds. Round 19 was actually a very solid round, with three 100+ TPE players, but Mendoza is head and shoulders above the rest. MB - Round 34, Pick 271 - Tom Sofa - 161 TPE The last pick of the draft, Sofa is the highest earner after Round 23. One of five QB’s drafted in the last round, Myrtle Beach found the only active one. DAL - Round 20, Pick 155 - Big Edd - 169 TPE Dallas picked up a character in Round 20 with Big Edd. Not only a good TPE earner, Edd has an edgy sense of humor and is a good personality in the league. DAL - Round 5, Pick 33 - Jeffrey Phillips - 228 TPE Phillips is the third highest earner in the S22 class, and Dallas was able to nab him in the 5th, probably due to him being a tight end. This has not stopped Phillips from being a regular contributor for the Birddogs, and is one of many pieces leading their charge to the playoffs. Lowest Value Picks: MIN - Round 9, Pick 72 - Ricky Boomhauer - 59 TPE This pick is really hurting the Grey Ducks. At only 59 TPE and staying active, Boomhauer is on the field against some top wide receivers and it shows. KC - Round 3, Pick 21 - Kevin Fakon - 117 TPE Fakon is having a good season for the Coyotes, but is noticeably the lowest earner in the top three rounds. TIJ - Round 4, Pick 29 - Ozamataz Buckshank - 109 TPE Buckshank has tallied two picks this season, but the Luchadores were probably hoping for a higher earning player here in Round 4. POR - Round 10, Pick 75 - Pseudo QB - 59 TPE This is one of the lowest value picks by the numbers, but with Pseudo being a kicker, this isn’t hurting Portland terribly. However, Kansas City took McDairmid two picks later, the top earning S22 kicker by far. TIJ - Round 6, Pick 45 - Devaunte Sackpieder - 97 TPE Sackpieder is having a surprisingly good season despite only attaining 97 TPE, logging 11 tackles for loss and an INT. I guess the sim likes him? Biggest Bust: Sean O’Donohue - KC. Round 5, Pick 37. O’Donohue is the highest drafted player to go inactive. Disappointing for Kansas City, but it doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on the team. Conclusion: It definitely looks like Minnesota had a poor draft. However, blame cannot really put on the GM’s in such a crapshoot of a draft in the later rounds. The Grey Ducks’ top picks are all solid earners, but a mixture of inactivity and low-earning active players cost them dearly. Bad luck? On the other hand, Dallas absolutely murdered this draft and it’s allowing the Birddogs to make a run at the playoffs in their expansion season. Mad props to the GM’s for scouting such a large class. Also, their strategy of going for a large quantity of picks really paid off and allowed them to make several of the best picks of the draft. This was a fun article to write and I hope you find the data as informative and enjoyable as I do. *A TPE Look into the S21 DSFL Draft - Thor - 03-31-2020 Round 5 best round *A TPE Look into the S21 DSFL Draft - Memento Mori - 03-31-2020 (03-31-2020, 10:13 AM)Feeler Wrote:Round 5 best round *A TPE Look into the S21 DSFL Draft - Big Edd - 03-31-2020 round 20 best 20 *A TPE Look into the S21 DSFL Draft - furiousPanda - 03-31-2020 Good stuff @FurFurFurson! |
