*The top 12 active rookie DE's/where they may fall - cho1325 - 03-31-2020

With the upcoming draft I wanted to take a look at all the active rookie defensive end talents as out of the majority of the position groups this draft class has very few with a whopping 12. The typical defensive end is a tall, strong player with the ability to hold his own against an offensive tackle and the speed and quickness to get to the quarterback or chase down a running back. Honestly speaking all the teams could use great defensive ends especially the expansion teams but here are my best guesses for the top 6 DE’s as after that I feel like they are bargain picks. So without further ado I present to you the top 10. (All recorded stats are recent as of 3/30/20)

1. Troen Egghands (201 TPE Myrtle Beach) at 6’3” and 272 lbs Troen Egghands leads the defensive end position with a whopping 201 TPE. So far Egghands has recorded 28 tackles 15 which were tackle for loss and 4 sacks. He has a strong, well defined and muscular frame and is an amazing physical specimen with a long wingspan, thick calves, a muscular build and cat like quickness. An explosive and fluid athlete in pursuit, showing the range to generate speed long distance. Has a sudden burst off the edge to slip past a slow offensive tackle. Strong run defender who plays with leverage. Shows good explosion and wrap up technique to stop the ball carrier’s progress and is a physical striker who makes his presence felt upon arrival. Willing to do the little extras to get better and has no problem taking plays from the chalkboard to the playing field. I see Egghands falling to the new expansion teams either Honolulu Hahalua or the Sarasota Sailfish.

2. Sandro Ryeu (185 TPE London) at 6’2” and 279 lbs Sandro Ryeu is the 2nd highest TPE DE on the board. Ryeu has recorded 60 tackles 12 of which were tackle for loss, 1 sack and 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Ryeu is a great athlete that has prototypical size and very good instincts for the linebacker position. He is at his best as a pass rusher in a 3-4 defense, as he is explosive and strong with an arsenal of pass rushing moves. He may lack the size to consistently anchor against the run, but he flashes the ability to disengage from blockers and is an underrated run stopper. Has prototypical size and can flat out run. Explosive first step and closing burst makes him a terror as an edge rusher. Reads quickly, fills fast and delivers violent shots in the running game. Sound tackler that breaks down the ball carrier in the open field and consistently wraps. Hard working kid that shows a relentless motor. Colorado Yeti’s could use Ryeu’s talent and speed if they can grab him early. I can also see the expansion team that didn’t get Egghands to nab Ryeu also.

3. Patrik Money (175 TPE Kansas City) at 6’4” and 290 lbs Money is the third ranked DE. Money has recorded 21 tackles 6 which were tackle for loss and 6 sacks. Money is an ideal fit as a strong side 4-3 defensive end but some may like him more as a 3-4 end. A hard-working, intelligent, relentless player. Uses his hands extremely well to get off blocks both rushing the passer and against the run. Doesn't possess great initial quickness but closes hard and fast on the quarterback and has enough straight lined speed to pursue from the backside. Good height, fast hands and great anticipation allow him to bat down a ton of passes. Has a good combination of size and speed. Takes direct routes to the quarterback, uses his hands well to get unblocked and shows a closing burst. Knocks down a lot of passes. Great hand usage against the run as well, keeps blockers off away from his frame and locates the ball carrier. If the two new expansion teams have selected the top DE’s so far then look for Philadelphia or Colorado to draft Money.

4. Slinky Claxton (168 TPE Portland) at 6’4” and 296 lbs Claxton is the fourth ranked DE. Claxton has recorded 31 tackles 3 which were tackle for loss. He is one of the higher-probability, game ready prospects in this class. He's an ideal fit as a 3-4 defensive end but could also serve as a strong side DE in a four-man front. Really a good fit for any team that stresses gap integrity. Has good strength at the point of attack, plays with sound positioning, locates the ball carrier, gets off blocks and uses his good quickness and agility against the run. Not a big time pass rushing talent by any means, but still has some good power moves. At his best against the run. Keeps blockers off his body, has the diagnosing skills to find the football and can get off blocks and make plays. Shows impressive stamina for a big DE staying on the field for third down and playing all four quarters. At this point in the draft DE’s are scarce and so I can see the expansion teams picking up their second DE pairing here.

5. James Cho (164 TPE Dallas) at 6’5” and 280 lbs Cho is the 5th ranked DE. Cho has recorded 28 tackles 11 which were tackle for loss 2 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. High motor defensive end prospect possessing NSFL play strength on a well-muscled, compact frame. Cho uses forward lean, smart hands and impressive upper body power to pry open edges against the run and pass. He can defeat single blocks and fits as an end in both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with the ability to reduce inside as a rusher. His lack of fluidity in space could prevent him from becoming an elite rusher, but he understands how to play and should become an early starter and future Pro Bowler. Expansion team pairing if not look for Baltimore to draft Cho.

6. Simeon Works (136 TPE London) at 6’5” and 275 lbs Works is the 6th ranked DE. Works has recorded 23 tackles 8 which were tackle for loss and 2 sacks. Highly athletic. Fluid, flexible and rangy. Terrific balance and body control. Has quick, coordinated hands and feet to slingshot off blocks. Has natural pass rush ability shows burst, bend and closing speed to hunt down quarterbacks. Dips inside suddenly. Explosive tackler. A loose, explosive, long limbed athlete, Works consistently pressurizes the edge and harasses quarterbacks. Look for San Jose to draft Works in the later rounds.

7. Mario VonPebbles (120 TPE Minnesota) at 6’6” and 265 lbs VonPebbles is the 7th ranked DE. VonPebbles has recorded 18 tackles 6 which were tackle for loss and 4 sacks. A solid performer at either defensive end spot, VonPebbles has a combination of pass rushing length and run stopping strength on the edge. Tall with a strong upper body and long arms. Can play on the strong or weak side because of his length and strength. Long arms allow him to reach ball carriers coming through the hole. Can spin to get off of blocks and change direction. Disrupts a quarterback's vision with long arms and can bat down balls. Seldom leaves the field. Flashes play making ability and can produce athletic feats in a category with few others before him. Versatile lines up everywhere along the line and can win with strength, power, quickness and speed.

8. Ismael Sanchez (113 TPE Kansas City) at 6’6” and 300 lbs Sanchez ranks 8th. Sanchez has recorded 5 tackles 3 which were tackle for loss. Sanchez has a great frame to add additional bulk and strength which should improve him as a run defender. He shows natural quickness and anticipation as an edge rusher and has an expanded package to counter effectively. Exhibits impressive speed and quickness off the ball as a pass rusher and good long range in run pursuit. Sanchez is a disruptive player with good range to run down plays from the backside but lacks the strength at the point of attack to stop the run. He will need to improve his hand use, pad level, strength and technique in this phase of the game at the next level but should fit in well in a 4-3 defensive scheme.

9. Jimmy Frackerson (110 TPE Myrtle Beach) at 6’5” and 289 lbs Frackerson is the 9th ranked DE. Frackerson has recorded 13 tackles. Combination of size, length, and foot speed is nearly unparalleled. Delivers solid first contact that jolts opponent back. Continues to press and locate ball carriers in the backfield. Consistently sheds at the line of scrimmage, envelopes his target with a strong grasp and outstanding closing burst. Has admitted to a lack of stamina. Fatigue is noticeable after a few plays of rushing the passer. In those circumstances, does not chase the play down from the backside, instead staying at the line of scrimmage to knock down the pass.

10. Buster Brownce (88 TPE Norfolk) at 6’3” and 300 lbs Brownce is the 10th overall DE. Brownce has recorded 1 tackle, 1 sack, and a forced fumble with a fumble recovery. Brownce has good size and speed. Explodes off the line and plays with sound leverage to get under offensive tackles. Persistent pass rusher with great closing burst that has a knack for making strip sacks. Reads quickly and has a strong lower half which makes him stout against the run. Very productive. Lacks the elite burst and speed to consistently get around the edge. Does not show an adequate repertoire of pass rushing counter moves. Struggles at times to make plays in space.

11. Beef Buckets (67 TPE Dallas) at 6’4” and 277 lbs is the 11th overall DE. Buckets has recorded 8 tackles 5 which were tackle for loss and 1 sack. A 4-3 base end who won't wow teams with his frame or athleticism but who will pique their interest with his rugged play demeanor and surprising rush acumen. Buckets is stout at the point of attack and will offer some value as a power rusher, he really flashed an ability to translate his power into an above average rush. Buckets toughness, size and strength are traits seen typically from players who develop into quality starting ends.

12. Anthony Brewer (62 TPE (Mrytle Beach) at 6’5” and 298 lbs is the final DE in this report. Brewer has not yet recorded any stat line in the DSFL. Brewers is based on projection over what he shows today. He has obvious upside that is waiting to be unlocked and unleashed, but he must get stronger and play with better technique and toughness. Brewer doesn't have the sand in his pants to hold up at the point of attack as an interior defender and will likely be targeted as a base end in 4-3 or 3-4 schemes with a likely role of reducing inside on passing downs. Brewer may need a team with a patient approach and willing mentor to guide him along his early stages. It will take time, but he should become an impact starter in the league.
