*S22 DSFL Draft Retrospective - SwankyPants31 - 04-09-2020

Note: I had to cut this post into 4 parts due to the emoticon limit on forum posts.

Now that the season is over and updates are done, I wanted to do sort of a retrospective look at how the S22 draft class went. I’ve been curious myself as to how I’ve stacked up against other running backs in my class that were drafted before and after me. I thought others might be interested in their respective positions as well, so I decided to just take the plunge and look at every position. I’ve broken it out by position for your viewing pleasure. I think everyone should be on this list, but if I missed you just yell at me in the replies and I’ll look back through and fix it. I also want to apologize for any mis-spellings or if I have you on the wrong team. There are 271 of us, and there are bound to be a couple mistakes in here.

In order to make this a little more fun for myself, I’ve also added a little analysis to each position. I’ll be breaking it down into “The Good” and “The Bad”. I’ve also done some overall analysis of the entire class at the end of these lists. One thing I want to note is that this is strictly based on TPE and draft position. Unfortunately I’m some kind of casual and don’t know every person in my draft class. So if I say taking you was a reach, it was because your TPE was lower than others taken at your position after you, and has no bearing on your personality or what you contribute to the locker room. That being said, let’s get started.

QB
1. Monterey Jack, DAL - 229
2. Colby Jack, LON - 245
4. Ben Slothlisberger, TIJ - 203
54. Luke Skywalker, NOR - 193
104. Sim SnowBow, MIN - 102
117. Dude Doggo, KCC - 50
118. Suleiman Ramza, NOR - 164
180. Jim Waters, TIJ - 207
259. Evan Riley, POR - 50
267. Colin Vance, POR - 50
268. Cavalier Craighorn, TIJ - 50
269. Swift Willy, KCC - 50
270. Allen Spooner, NOR - 50
271. Tom Sofa, BBB - 181

The Good

TIJ BBB

I’m going to give the nod for the QB position to Tijuana and Myrtle Beach. While obviously London and Dallas have the top two QBs in the class, what sets Tijuana and MB apart for me is that they were able to add value much later in the draft. Jim Waters taken over halfway through the draft at 180 is a steal, especially considering he ended up with the 3rd highest TPE among quarterbacks, behind only the Jack brothers mentioned earlier. Myrtle Beach got similar, if not even greater value out of Mr. Irrelevant himself, Tom Sofa. These picks gave the Luchadores two starting caliber QBs for the DSFL, and while QB wasn’t necessarily a position of immediate need for Myrtle Beach, they’ll have a developed Tom Sofa ready to step in.

The Bad

KCC

I’m going to be honest here, I don’t really get the Dude Doggo pick. At 117 they could have had a top earner in Jim Waters, or a respectable earner in either Sofa or Ramza, but instead went with a blank slate who wouldn’t post a single update for the entire season. Maybe they talked with him beforehand and were convinced he was a late bloomer, or maybe Doggo has some dirty pictures of the GMs lying around, but this was far and away the biggest miss at this position.

RB
16. White Goodman, DAL - 246
21. Kevin Fakon, KCC - 117
25. Acura Skyline, LON - 219
31. Tatsu Nakamura, POR - 212
58. Kichwa Jones, DAL - 219
64. Jamar Lackson, MIN - 192
96. Richard Gilbert, TIJ - 193
121. Jacoby Batista, LON - 126
136. J.B. Apollo, BBB - 126
139. Zed Keppler, POR - 98
154. Aaron Feels, DAL - 112
167. Streetlamp LeMoose, BBB - 57
169. Winston Bragg, LON - 50
181. Da Owl, KCC - 57
195. Troy Pressing, POR - 50
198. Sulu Candles, NOR - 50
228. Vince Waterhouse, TIJ - 50
241. Patrick Holding, DAL - 50
244. Julio Tirtawidjaja, TIJ - 185
258. Anthony De Luca, LON - 57

The Good

DAL TIJ

I know what you’re thinking. Even though I’ve put my Lucha as “good” for both of the first two positions, I don’t think I’m being a homer here. I’m able to justify why we drafted well at these positions, and you’ll see me later criticizing some of our other picks. To start things off though, The Dallas Birddogs clearly come out on top here. While they were required to spend their second round pick on GM running back White Goodman, I don’t think that’s a decision they regret or a reach. Goodman turned out to be one of the few blue chip players coming out of the season, with one of the highest levels of TPE earned out of not only the running backs, but of all positions. For the Luchadores, I’m putting them here again due to the late round value they found. While myself at 96 is about the right spot in retrospect, the acquisition of Julio Tirtawidjaja all the way at pick 244 should be in contention for the biggest steal of the draft. At this point in all likelihood, the GMs were probably just drafting based on who had the funniest names. Julio took that extremely late pick and turned it into a legitimate 185 TPE, putting him in the lower range of the top running backs.

The Bad

KCC

Promise I don’t have anything against Kansas City. I can’t see how they don’t regret this pick though. That’s not to second guess their pick at the time, from what I remember Kevin Fakon was one of the more highly touted RB prospects and garnered interest from a lot of teams. Unfortunately for the Coyotes though, he doesn’t seem to have stayed as active as they would have liked given how highly he was drafted.

WR
13. Eddie Jeeta, KCC - 195
30. Kevin Koh, NOR - 154
36. Thomas Passmann, TIJ - 200
40. William Alexander, MIN - 188
46. William Lim, DAL - 216
50. Susan Cash Jr., LON - 194
53. Michael Witheblock, KCC - 214
68. Friedrich Vequain, TIJ - 104
79. Garfield Despacito Jr., BBB - 161
81. Mike Lee, DAL - 160
89. Blake Alexander, LON - 74
101. Tan Johnson, KCC - 119
115. Cal Cutta, POR - 57
127. Leeroy Jenkins, BBB - 176
134. Ronan Briscoe, NOR - 69
171. DeSean Hill, DAL - 50
173. Curious George, KCC - 50
176. Henry Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, LON - 50
188. Logan Marshall, TIJ - 50
192. Donovan Smith, MIN - 50
204. Terrell Brister, Jr., TIJ - 50
208. Daymond Brooks, MIN - 103
209. Scott Scott, DAL - 50
210. Steve Alvarado, LON - 50
215. Bobby Black, BBB - 50
217. Tyler Curtis, LON - 50
231. Bryant Moreland, BBB - 50
238. Nathan Bigelow, NOR - 50

The Good

KCC

After the last two positions where I felt Kansas City did poorly, I think they nailed it more than any other team for this position. WR turned out to be a bit of a shallow position in this draft, and while there are a few diamonds in the rough, there aren’t really any WRs that blew it away in the TPE department. The reason I believe the Coyotes set themselves apart from everyone else at WR is that they were able to draft two of the top five TPE receivers of the year in Eddie Jeeta and Michael Witheblock. While the Bird Dogs came close, and the Buccaneers drafted a decent pair of receivers as well, no other team grabbed as high earning a tandem as the Coyotes.

The Bad

NOR

It was hard picking a team to knock for their drafting of receivers. I ended up deciding to go with Norfolk because they spent the second highest draft pick out of all teams on a receiver, who earned at minimum 34 less TPE than the next 5 receivers taken. I don’t think Koh is a bad pick by any means, at 154 TPE he is a decent earner, but the value just isn’t there. The other team I considered putting here was Portland, as they only drafted one receiver who ended up at 57 TPE. Since they spent a late pick and clearly weren’t targeting WR this draft though, I decided not to hold it against them.

TE
27. Daniel George, POR - 182
33. Jeffrey Phillips, DAL - 247
39. Heath Evans, BBB - 212
76. Max McClure, TIJ - 65
91. Nick Marksman, POR - 90
103. Montgomery Mantooth, BBB - 66
107. Von Hayes, POR - 111
124. Rondo Jones, TIJ - 83
130. Douglas MacArthur, LON - 72
133. Tristian Hex, DAL - 65
146. Donatello Arrabiata, LON - 154
161. Zee Rechs, DAL - 95
179. Henry Sigurdsson, DAL
197. Titus Lincoln, KCC - 57
199. Ike Oscar, BBB - 50
206. Brent Blackmon, NOR - 50
224. Shawn Ansari, MIN - 81
227. Craig Royal, POR - 50
243. John Doe, POR - 57
246. Cameron Tova, NOR - 50
249. Seth Goepferich, LON - 50
254. Colin Miller, NOR - 50
266. Regan Meynell, DAL - 50

The Good

DAL

No contest here, Jeffrey Phillips turned out to be another one of those blue chip players that has some of the highest TPE in the class. There’s not really much else to say here, TE was one of the most shallow positions in this draft. Honorable mentions go out to Portland and Myrtle Beach, who also made some good decisions when it came to drafting tight ends.

The Bad

Everyone who didn’t pick one of the first three tight ends

Hard to evaluate here, there was a pretty steep dropoff after Evans as far as earners. Only exception was the Royals’ Donatello Arrabiata, who put up a respectable 154 TPE for the season. Anyone needing a tight end that didn’t take one of the first three is probably kicking themselves right now.

99. Julius Augustus, POR - 50
112. Gabe Nickson, MIN - 50
123. Toshihide Matsumoto, POR - 50
193. James Carson, TIJ - 69

The Good

POR

I’m giving this one to the Pythons on almost the same basis that I gave receivers to the Coyotes. While The Luchadores and Buccaneers were also able to snag one good offensive lineman each, the Pythons grabbed three of them.

The Bad

Everyone that I didn’t mention in “The Good”

I’m going to again more or less repeat what I said in the tight end section. Offensive Line was an extremely shallow position, and there just wasn’t even guys that everyone could get one. I suppose you could call the Pythons’ Fernando Cruz a bust given he was taken just three picks after Calvin Golladay, but at that point in the draft you probably just had your fingers crossed while drafting at this position.

251. Paul Novotny, POR - 50
257. Lee Jordan, DAL - 50

The Good

KCC DAL

How could I not give the best defensive tackle draft to the team that drafted the king himself, Phat Boi. The current TPE leader of all S22 rookies, Phat Boi was about as sure of a thing as you can expect to get in this league. On top of that though, the Coyotes were able to get some decent value out of Nuniq Annastesia at pick 109. While 159 TPE doesn’t put him as a leader at his position, it’s a respectable amount earned. It doesn’t beat the value Dallas got out of Big Edd at number 155 though. Earning 190 TPE over the season Big Edd proved to be a big steal at a fairly shallow position. On top of that, Dallas was able to grab another top earning DT at pick 26 with Deshun Jones.

The Bad

LON

The Royals royally botched it here (I’ve been waiting to use that one). They spent two of their top 100 picks on DT only for one to not break 100 TPE and the other to only just break it at 106 TPE. At this position instead, Hank Steel, Nuniq Annastesia, and Big Edd were all available and would have been better value than what they ended up getting.

239. Justice Wolfe, BBB - 52
245. DeShawn Jones, KCC - 57
263. Anthony Brewer, BBB - 62

The Good

LON

London made up for a not so stellar DT draft with a much better DE draft. They were able to grab the third highest DE at pick 34 in Sandro Ryeu, then later got decent value out of Simeon Works with 147 TPE at pick 114. Honorable mentions go to the Coyotes for also getting good value out of Patrik Money at 85 and Ismael Sanchez at 61.

The Bad

MIN

The Minnesota Grey Ducks spent 4 picks out the first 110 picks on the DE position and failed to hit on a single one of them. Of those 4, Mario VonPebbles earned the most at 134 which is still a bit on the low end. The other three defensive ends taken by the Grey Ducks did not even break the 100 TPE mark. They took a shotgun approach to drafting this position, and only barely grazed their target.

The Good

DAL

Dallas had a great draft when it came to linebackers, and should be celebrating. Obviously what stands out immediately is the Stanislaw Kniecpolski pick at 22, which turned out to be the highest earning linebacker and another blue chip player in the class. On top of that though, the Bird Dogs got another earner that broke the 200 mark on the season all the way at pick 74 in Haha Mango-Panda.

The Bad

KCC TIJ

Before my teammate George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher tears my arms off and beats me to death with them, please give me a chance to explain. Yes, both the Coyotes and Luchadores were able to pick up good linebackers in Fawn Dillmiballs at 69 (nice) and Fisher at 48. The reason I give both these teams the negative grade on this though is due to earlier picks that missed. The Coyotes took Sean O’Donohue at 37 and the Luchadores took Devaunte SackPieder at 45, neither of which ended up breaking even 100 TPE on the season. While these two teams surely don’t regret their later linebacker picks, they would both most likely to have those two top 50 picks back.

The Good

DAL

This was a tough one. I couldn’t decide whether to put Dallas in the good or bad column for this one. One the one hand, they only ended up drafting one CB in a loaded CB class that ended up breaking 100 TPE. On the other hand, that one CB ended up being the one and only Colt Mendoza, better known on the forum as iSteg. The value on this pick was insane, as he somehow slid all the way back to 147. Besides his 200 TPE, which indicates he’s a great earner, Colt/iSteg is one of the few S22 rookies I recognize right off the bat because he’s been extremely active on the forums creating media that is so in depth it makes my stuff look like child’s play.

The Bad

MIN

The Grey Ducks retrospective at this position looks eerily similar to the one at Defensive End. In this case, they spent 3 of their picks in the top 100 on cornerbacks. Of those 3, the highest earner was 115. The Grey Ducks again took a shotgun method approach here and missed spectacularly.

The Good

TIJ

This one was a tough pick for me. If you look over the teams that selected safeties and the eventual TPE of those safeties, everyone kind of falls exactly where you would expect them to. There weren’t very many reaches in this group, but there weren't any real steals either. The reason I gave this one to the Luchadores (other than blatant homerism of course) was because they knew when to step in to grab value. There was a run on the top safeties early, but the Luchadores were still able to get value of their two safety picks LiterallyJust A. Hexagon and Magnus Valdyr. After those two picks, which ended up around 150 each, there were only two more than broke 100 TPE. While neither Hexagon or Valdyr are what I would call “top earners” based on their TPE’s, they both seemed to become more active later in the season and have bright futures if they continue to stick around.

The Bad

None

Try as I might, I really can’t say any team had a bad draft at the safety position. As I said in the good section, everyone sort of fell exactly where they should have. The one thing that jumps out is the Jimmy Cooks pick at 55 by the Buccaneers that only generated 67 TPE, however Myrtle Beach made enough other great picks including top safety Johnny Hellzapoppin that I couldn’t in good faith give them a bad grade.

The Good

KCC

Have to give this one to the Coyotes. Throughout this evaluation, I’ve used 150 TPE as sort of a benchmark for what I would consider a “good” earner. Only one kicker in this class has broken that threshold, which is Kansas City’s Matthew McDairmid. Honorable mentions go to the Seawolves, Buccaneers, and Luchadores for grabbing the only other kickers in this class to break 100 TPE.

The Bad

POR

Pythons are the natural choice here for what is a somewhat puzzling choice on picking up Pseudo QB. While the TPE tracker shows activity for Pseudo QB on April 9, it remains to be seen if he can turn it around in the upcoming seasons. Either way, it all comes down to Portland spending the second highest draft pick on a kicker who ended up not updating for the rest of the season.

Overall Reviews

Draft Winner

DAL

Looking back over each position, my opinion is that the Dallas Birddogs had the best draft of S22. They consistently hit on each position and were able to find great value across the board. Really the only criticism I have of this team’s draft is at the cornerback spot, and even there they were able to find a late round steal to prevent the CB position from being a total wreck. I believe the fact that this expansion team was fighting for a spot all the way to the last week of the regular season is a testament to how good of a draft they had.

Draft Loser

MIN

I want to start off by saying that I don’t think Minnesota had a “bad” draft per se. In fact, I think all the teams drafted pretty well. What set the Grey Ducks apart from the rest of the teams for me was what I had highlighted in the DE and CB sections. Looking back over these the top 100 or so picks were where most of the high earners (think 150+) were, and at these two positions the Grey Ducks spent 7 picks in the top 110, and didn’t really hit on a single one. This is especially puzzling considering CB ended up being the deepest position in the draft, and they still didn’t manage to have any of the top CBs fall into their laps.

Hot and Cold

KCC

I want to highlight this for the Coyotes, because when I looked back over each position it made me laugh. More than any other team, it seems Kansas City either absolutely nailed the position or completely blew it. For every botched early pick at QB and RB, there was a homerun at WR or DT.

Quietest Team

NOR

The Norfolk Seawolves ended up being the team I found I paid the least attention to while looking back at this draft. They for sure had some good picks, but they didn’t really land any of those late round steals to win the draft. On the other hand, they also didn’t really blow it with any of their picks, other than wide receiver. All in all, Norfolk had a solid draft with no major mistakes, which sometimes is all you really want.

First off this is some extremely great content man. I've been interested in seeing how the draft shook out for all the teams. @Exilizer and I were talking about earlier today in fact. Thanks for compiling it all.

Super glad to see so many Birddogs up there too. Gucci and Kyle did an outstanding job of building a great locker room environment. Good environments are invaluable - they encourage you to stay active and engaged, which leads to more earning. I think this is a great representation of the good stuff going on in Dallas and the great decisions our GMs made.

I'll be cold and in the ground before I recognize kickers as people.

Definitely an intentional choice and not because I forgot to include them...
