*S22 Expansion Mock Draft - RussDrivesTheBus - 04-12-2020

The Expansion Draft will be arguably the single most influential event in recent league history. Some teams have been lucky to have fantastic inactive players bolstering their ranks, but that won’t be the case for much longer. There’s a ton of strategy that goes into something like this. Expansion teams don’t have to think about positional need per se, so they can focus on taking major pieces away from some of their conference rivals, if they choose. But, that isn’t to say that they should heavily focus on that over taking whatever the most promising player available is. Something else to consider is the value of older inactive players versus younger actives. There are some inactive beasts with over 1000 TPE who will no doubt be taken in this draft, but where? Teams also have to take into consideration the three-player limit. If two players have already been taken from one team, and they still have a desirable player left, they may not be able to risk waiting to get them. The drama of this draft may well outshine that of the upcoming S22 NSFL Draft. But, enough talking! Let’s get into the picks.

SAR 1.01 – Laszlo Forty-Two, WR COL - Protect Thor Kirby
While there are some standouts, the Receiver class in the upcoming S22 draft is not especially loaded. Therefore, Sarasota will take one of the best Receivers in the entire league, Forty-Two. This also steals a huge impact player from a conference opponent, which is a major boon for the Sailfish. Quarterback Zack Vega will be more than happy to throw to this weapon.

HON 1.02 – Lucas Knight, CB ARI – Protect Ruff Ruff
Knight is an incredible player, no matter how you look at him. He will enter regression this season, but with 1100 TPE and a loaded DB draft class, Honolulu are more than happy to hold onto him for the next few seasons.

HON 2.03 – Dexter Banks II, WR OCO – Protect Jaylen Storm
Both of Honolulu’s opening picks in this draft come from conference opponents. This time, from the perennial powerhouse Otters. Leaving Banks unprotected for this expansion draft puzzled some, but the Hahalua are ecstatic to get their WR1 for the foreseeable future. Banks is in his prime and, with veteran Corvo Havran at the helm of the offense, he should see plenty of the ball.

SAR 2.04 – Richard D’Attoria, S PHI – Protect Avon Blocksdale Jr.
This Safety from Philly comes with almost 1200 TPE, 100 Speed and the bonus of being from another conference team. Both the expansion teams have shown a solid grasp of the strategy involved in this draft early on.

SAR 3.05 – Ryan Leaf Jr., RB CHI – Protect Beat
Sarasota may well take Leaf with their first pick, but I could see them risking it to grab Forty-Two. Leaf comes with his controversy and will be retiring after one year, but if the Sailfish do well enough in this draft, they could compete for the Ultimus right away.

HON 3.06 – Xavien Adams, CB NOLA – Protect Mark Arianlacher
Entering his prime, Adams will be the perfect complement to Knight in the secondary. While he isn’t the highest earner, he is active and will be a solid base for this new defense. Look for Honolulu to take advantage of this deep S22 DB class, in order to secure their future secondary star.

HON 4.07 – Givussafare Rubbe, OL NOLA – Protect Deon Taylor
The Secondline takes a second hit in a row, this time to their O-Line. Rubbe is a massive lad with incredible strength and blocking abilities. The best lineman in the draft will be a rock in front of Havran, and the Quarterback after him.

SAR 4.08 – Lanzer Grievous, LB OCO – Protect A. Dasistwirklichseinnachname
Grievous is the best Linebacker on the board and one of the best in the league overall. He is inactive and hitting regression this season, but his 1200 TPE will see him as the backbone of the front seven for a few years yet.

SAR 5.09 – Edmondov Emoji, CB PHI – Protect Venus Powers
The Sailfish take their first Corner, and what a player he is. Emoji is yet another 1000 TPE player that’s hitting regression. But, with the pieces they already have in place, Sarasota is drafting with a more “Win-Now” mentality. That’s a big gamble, but with the amazing players that are available to them, they see it as a real possibility.

HON 5.10 – Rod Tidwell, WR AUS – Protect Pete Larson
While Honolulu are looking to build more with the future in mind, they cannot let Tidwell pass them by again. He racked up 1100 yards, yet he was let unprotected for his younger teammate Gains. This will prove to be a chip on his shoulder this season, as he looks to prove to Austin that they shouldn’t have let him go.

HON 6.11 – Tony Gabagool, LB COL – Protect Steco Ocewilder
Gabagool was the second leading tackler in the NSFL this season, and he isn’t looking to slow down. Regression may start to take a small hold, but with the fantastic pieces already in Secondary, Tony should still be a menace for a few more seasons.

SAR 6.12 – Brave Ulysses, OL NOLA – Protect ALL
The Secondline lose a second lineman. Sorry, had to. Ulysses is inactive, but has all the necessary tools to protect Vega as he grows into his new offense. This does, however, protect the rest of the Secondline from poaching.

SAR 7.13 – Fabricio Baldari, DE BAL – Protect Terry Taffy
With 11 TFLs and 4 Sacks, Baldari showed his ability to be a game-wrecker. This pick serves to weaken an already depleted pass rush for the conference rival Hawks, and simultaneously create a foundation for the Sailfish pass rush.

HON 7.14 - Chase Jensen, S AUS – Protect Jacoby Clay
Jensen is another inactive secondary player, but he’ll be a starter from the jump while Honolulu loads up with young talent in the S22 draft. Jensen is a well-rounded safety who can also play corner if needed.

HON 8.15 – Jammerson Irving, TE ARI – Protect (Couldn't find an eligible player)
Yet another weapon for Havran, Irivng is one of the most productive players in the NSFL. He led all players in receiving yards with 1281 this season and added 22 pancake blocks. He will serve as a fantastic safety blanket for Havran and an extra blocker in some formations.

SAR 8.16 – Ricardo Morris, DT PHI – Protect ALL
The Sarasota front seven adds another member in the veteran Morris, thus locking all other players in the Liberty locker room. Morris recorded 8 sacks this season, so he will be a strong piece to build on for this defense.

SAR 9.17 – Guy Nikko, LB BAL – Protect ALL
Speaking of defense, Sarasota goes right back to defense and takes Linebacker Nikko to pair with Grievous. This locks the rest of the Hawks, notably Bakshi, from being selected. Nikko filled the stat sheet this season, including 110 Tackles and 2 Sacks. Both of these Sailfish Linebackers will enter regression this year, but they have plenty of fight left in them regardless.

HON 9.18 – Orien Drake, RB YKW – Protect ALL
This young RB isn’t necessarily an RB1, but the sim likes him and he’s young. Honolulu is fine with the value here after having more of a heavy focus on defense early on. If the Hahalua can hit on one of the young Running Backs in the upcoming draft, they could have an excellent tandem on their hands for many seasons.

HON 10.19 – Silver Banana, P/K COL – Protect ALL
This pick may surprise some, but you cannot have a championship caliber team without a championship caliber kicker. Banana is just that piece. The Yeti will hate to see him go, but Honolulu are happy to jump on this valuable piece. Banana has only been in the league for 2 seasons, so he’ll be kicking for years to come. The rest of the Yetis are protected, but this is still a huge loss.

SAR 10.20 – Victor Moreno, CB AUS – Protect ALL
Moreno could be one of the best selections in this entire draft. Inactive for only a month, this Corner is young and built well. His 93 Speed is more than capable of keeping up with most Reveivers, and, in his last update, he increased his tackling ability by 11 points. Even if he doesn’t increase his abilities any further, he will be a fine member of the secondary.

SAR 11.21 – Stevie Vassallo, DE CHI – Protect Diego Espinosa
The Butchers are not in the best of situations, and this pick does not improve that. Vassallo has been inactive for two months, but Chicago’s pass rush is weak as is. Losing Vassallo puts them in a dark place, which serves to improve Sarasota’s contention chances.

HON 11.22 – Joseph Wozniak, S SJS – Protect Caleb Beck
Of the remaining available players, Wozniak fits in the most versatile role for Honolulu. With incredible speed, this safety can play deep or in coverage as a Corner, if need be. He’s young as well, so he can fit into the secondary as it builds up over the next few years.

HON 12.23 – Gary Lazer-Eyes, DE OCO – Protect ALL
Honolulu’s final pick will go toward further filling up their front seven and taking a chunk out of the Otters yet again. Losing Kwame to retirement and now Lazer-Eyes to the Sailfish, the Otters are going to have to reload their pass rush this off-season. These kinds of picks are double decent for the expansion team because it serves to further protect their Quarterback.

SAR 12.24 – Oswald Grimnir, S SJS – Protect ALL
With the final pick in the Expansion Draft, Sarasota take another member of the San Jose Secondary. Grimnir is inactive, but his Speed and build will see him become a contributor on this defense regardless. Honolulu will be pleased with this pick as well, because it further softens their conference opponents.
