Do you remember the first time you when you went to a professional football game? Do you recall the first time you were inspired to pick up the ball and trying to run like the players you watched? Do you recall those very first mini camps, trying to get up after every time you were hit? Do you recall coming home after practice, your face covered in bruises and your legs horribly sore? You must have asked yourself:

“Is it worth it?”

You were putting yourself through trouble and pain and seeing nothing in return. You could have given up right there and said you were done… but you didn’t give up, because you had a dream. You had a dream that you would play this sport and it would become something you would cherish. No matter where you started, be it a freshly mowed grass surface in America or a broken down field in Eastern Europe, nothing was going to stop you from pursuing that dream. This was what you wanted to do and no amount of bruises, scrapes or sore legs was going to stop from playing this sport.

As you grew, so did your skills. You got faster, stronger, tougher and taller. Football had become your favourite pass-time but you wanted to do more. You saw an advert for a local team or maybe its coach saw you practicing and encouraged your parents to sign you up. Do you recall those first brutal practices under a professional coach? Those sessions that made you feel like you had just started to play football? Do you remember how no matter what you tried to do, other players would just keep you in check or how you couldn’t get a single point on the board? Or make a single tackle? Practice after practice goes by, game after game and nothing works. You look at yourself in the mirror and that same insidious question comes back

“Is it worth it?”

You could still pursue other interests, other sports maybe? You were young enough to think these things, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if said you were done… but once again, you didn’t give up. You had a different dream from before, a dream that you would become a professional football player. That you would make the most famous leagues of them all, the NSFL and the DSFL. You would give it all in practice no matter what your coaches said and would prove the world wrong. It didn’t matter to you how early you had to wake up, how many drills you have to do or even if you had to move to a different country, you would make it work because this what you wanted to dedicate yourself to.

You persistence and hard work finally seemed to be paying off. You made it to the College. Whether you were heavily recruited by scouts, were a late selection or came as a walk on, you had made it to the pros. You could hold your head high as you suited up to play your first professional game… Do you recall how the trouble started again? How the game was faster than before and rougher to boot. How now you were dealing with players older than you who already had greater ambitions and weren’t going to let some newly signed punk get off scot free?

Points were scarce and at times non-existent for you, the training sessions were tougher than ever before and now, thousands of eyeballs were on you at all times. Scouts from the both of those leagues, analysts and sports journalists gathered around you like moths to a bonfire and the media’s very presence was everywhere. As the season wore on, you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and once again, the question arose:

“Is it worth it?”

Sure you had invested a serious amount of your life into this endeavour but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t pursue other options? You lived in the modern era of the internet and smart phones, you could teach yourself something new and become great at it. You could make it work, all you had to do was say you were done… but here, at this most critical juncture of your life, you made the most important decision of your life. Once again, you didn’t give up because your dreams had changed again. Being a professional was no longer your goal, you wanted to be remembered for Football. You wanted to become a star in the NSFL so that you could one day be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. You wanted to be one of the greatest to ever play the sport of Football.

Your hard work, your tenacity, your drive to succeed and to get back up when you were knocked down has finally brought you here, to the NSFL and DSFL draft. You put the miles in and finally made it this most important event. As you put on your best suit for the occasion, you catch yourself in the mirror one more time and a different question comes to your mind:

“Was it all worth it?”

But this time, there is no second guessing yourself, no indecision and no hesitation. You hold your head high as you confidently head out to the draft, proud of all you have achieved. The question that surrounds all of us, no matter what we do will always be the question of worth. Is what we are doing worth the struggle we put ourselves through? If you can find that inner strength to keep pushing on regardless of what happens, then nothing can truly stop you. So when we ask the question:

“Is it worth it?”

For these fine players who have dedicated their lives to getting to the most prestigious league in Football, they all have the same response:

“Yes!”
