Philadelphia Liberty Week 1-3 Review
PHI PHI PHI

Week 1 vs. Chicago Butchers

Philly’s season opener at home against the Chicago Butchers could not have been a better game for the Liberty. Winning 51-10, the offense and defense were both dominant in this game. With a total of 458 yards of offense, 279 of which coming through the air, Philly pushed down the field with ease. They totaled 6 touchdowns, with running back Sam Torrenson carrying three of those in himself. The receiving core also put up great stats with 3 wide receivers and a tight end having over 50 yards each. Finally, kicker Lefty Louis made 3 field goals and tied the record for XP’s in a game going 6/6.

On Defense, practically every player managed to stand out. Matt “Son of Havoc” Cross started off his NSFL Career in a big way, getting 2 interceptions in the game. Fellow rookie Brandon Booker also secured a pick of his own, and was tackled 1 yard away from making that a pick six. Rookie Tristan Gronlie got a sack on the first play of the game, and Spike Suzuki got one as well later on. Not to be out done by the rooks, Wayne Howyanow also got 2 sacks for himself. The defense was making plays left and right, and paired perfectly with the high powered offensive performance.

Week 2 vs. Colorado Yeti

Hoping to carry the momentum from the previous week’s dominant performance, the Liberty took on the Yeti at home. It was a tough and hard fought game, but the Yeti won it in the end 17-14. This game was an all out defensive war. The Philly defense had 2 interceptions, one being returned for a touchdown by Howyanow, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 sacks. However, the Colorado defense had a strong performance as well with 1 forced fumble, 4 sacks and only allowing the Liberty to convert on 2/13 third downs. The Liberty offense struggled going down the field for most of the game, only putting up 195 total yards. Meanwhile, Colorado had 456 yards of offense, with QB Wolfie McDummy contributing to 300 of these yards, with 200 as a passer, and 100 with his own legs. While the Colorado offense was dominant, the Liberty’s ability to hold them to only 17 points is definitely commendable. The defense kept them in this game late, and despite being composed of such young players, really shined in this game.

Week 3 vs. Baltimore Hawks

Week 3 brought an exciting match up against the Hawks and a fourth quarter comeback for the Liberty. Down 7-15 entering the fourth quarter, the Liberty offense scored 12 unanswered points and won the game 19-15. For the third week in a row, the Liberty defense had a great performance, this time against the Hawks. The only turnover in the game was 1 forced fumble by Howyanow, but where the Liberty defense made plays was on third downs. Holding the Hawks to 3/11 on third downs, they did not allow a single touchdown and instead, forced the Hawks to kick 5 field goals, three of which came from inside the redzone. This bend don’t break defensive performance kept the game alive for the Liberty, and their offense managed to break out of their slump with repeated big gains from Randy Vuxta. With a 31 yard touchdown reception to start the 4th quarter, and a 46 yard catch and run, where he literally carried defenders on his back, to put the Liberty in perfect position to score and take the lead. This road win for the Hawks means a lot for this team, and its implications later on in the season could be very significant.

Final Word

Starting out the season 2-1, the Liberty have been very happy with their performances thus far, especially with their young defense stepping up in these games. However, they know they have some tough match ups ahead of them. Taking on the Sarasota Sailfish on the road today, the Liberty are looking for another away victory, this time against their new division rival. Later in the week is a home game against the other 2-1 NSFC team the Yellowknife Wraiths, and to close out the week is a double header where the Liberty will be travelling to Austin and then Arizona, to take on the Copperheads and the Outlaws. While those 2 teams may be 0-2-1 right now, they definitely won’t be easy games to win on the road.

I do like being 2-1 but you know what would be better? 3-1.
