*History of the NSFL- Retired Numbers #4 - Cheech65 - 05-20-2020 Over the course of the NSFL’s past 21 seasons players have set such a standard that, out of respect, no other may don their jersey number. There are currently 21 such retired numbers across 6 NSFL teams. The Yellowknife Wraiths have retired 3 numbers in their team’s history. Number 5- Mat Akselsen Mat Akselsen started out as an OL prospect out of LSU, drafted in the 6th round by the Yellowknife Wraiths in the S1 Draft. He would gain prominence due to his occasional stint as a quarterback. Akselsen won the NSFL Defensive Player of the Year and the NSFL Defensive Back of the Year in S6, and the NSFL Most Outstanding Player Award in S7. He made 7 Pro Bowls in his career, and even though he sits on the charts for Most Sacks Taken and Most Interceptions Thrown, Akselsen is still honored as a legend. He was inducted into the Wraiths Ring of Honor, therefore retiring his number 5 jersey. Number 82- Eric Kennedy Eric Kennedy started his career at LSU, and was drafted by the Yellowknife Wraiths in 12th round of the S2 Draft; pick 93. The running back saw action immediately, starting at fullback, eventually taking on the majority of the rushing load. However, his natural talent for catching led him to transition into a wide receiver by the end of his career. A statistical monster, Kennedy’s best would come in S5. That year, he hit milestones for annual stats: 130 receptions (2nd all-time), 1655 receiving yards (3rd all-time) and 14 receiving touchdowns (7th all-time). In that year, Kennedy would also win the NSFL Breakout Player of the Year, NSFL Offensive Player of the Year, NSFL Most Valuable Player, and NSFL Offensive Player of the Year Awards. With the Wraiths he won the S8 Ultimus and played in 3 Pro Bowls. With his induction into the Wraiths Ring of Honor, his number 82 jersey was retired. Number 40- Dermot Lavelle Dermot Lavelle was a cornerback out of Arizona when he was drafted 1st overall by the Yellowknife Wraiths in the S2 Draft. He would play there his entire career, and what a career it was. His only Ultimus win came with the team in S8, but his personal achievements are legendary. He was the S9 NSFL Defensive Back of the Year, NSFL Defensive Player of the Year, and NSFL Returner of the Year (with a repeat win in S10). He is still charted in every aspect of a cornerback’s duties, and then some. Annually, he is 9th all-time in Interceptions (8 in S9) and 8th all-time in Pass Deflections (28 in S9). Moreover, he holds the 2nd, 7th, 8th, and 9th spots on the Annual Punt Return Yards and sits 5th all-time for annual Kick Return Yards (1312 in S11). However, his career records are what really seal the deal for this legend of the game. He is still 1st all-time in Interceptions (57), Pass Deflections (249), Punt Return Yards (3452), Kick Return Yards (9093), Kick Return Touchdowns (5), Defensive Touchdowns (10), and Games Played (182). He also holds the record for most Pro Bowl appearances with 13 (every season of his career). Lavelle was inducted into the NSFL Hall of Fame in the S17 class. He was also inducted into the Wraiths Ring of Honor, and his number 40 jersey was subsequently retired. In their history, the Austin Copperheads have only retired 1 jersey. GM- Charlie Law Charlie Law started his football career as a tight end at Boise State before getting drafted by the Arizona Outlaws, with whom he would win his first Ultimus (S3). He was traded after S6 to the New Orleans Second Line, where he would win 2 more championships. And following his 9th year in the NSFL (S11), he retired. S15 brought about expansion, and Charlie Law would take the helm as GM of the newly-formed Austin Copperheads. And, under his experienced leadership, the team would win the S20 Ultimus, only 5 years into their existence. Because of his dedication to his team and drive to win, Law was the first man inducted into the Austin Copperheads Ring of Honor, in honor of their founder and first leader, the GM jersey was ceremoniously retired. Only 1 number has been retired by the Orange County Otters. Number 32- Marc Spector Marc Spector was drafted out of Rice by the Orange County Otters in the 4th round of the S2 Draft. The cornerback became one of the best at the position, building an impressive stat sheet. He is 2nd all-time in Annual Pass Deflections (31 in S10), 2nd all-time in Career Pass Deflections (187), and he holds the Single-Game record for Most Passes Defended with 7 in the Otters’ opening game of S10. Spector played in 7 Pro Bowls and won 3 Ultimus Championships with the Otters in his career. He was inducted into the NSFL Hall of Fame in the S16 Class. The Orange County Otters do not traditionally retire jerseys, but in the case of Marc Spector, they took exception. The decision to retire his number 32 jersey came following the untimely passing of his creator, user RedCydranth, earlier this year. May he rest in peace.
