*S23 NSFL Draft Review - RansackTheUniverse - 06-10-2020

With the S23 NSFL Draft now in the books, I figured I take a look back at who was taken in the first couple of rounds.

1) COL S - Greedy Sly
After going number one overall in his DSFL Draft, Greedy Sly gets take number one yet again, this time by the Ultimus winning Yeti. Colorado is a team without many holes on their roster, and that afforded them the luxury of taking who many thought was the best player available in the draft. Sylphreni has been extremely active since joining the league, amassing a large bank account and becoming GM of the London Royals. Sly has already accumulated an impressive 266 TPE, and can be expected to continue max earning. With that said, the Yeti currently have three safeties on the roster with a higher TPE total. Like last year’s first overall pick Colt Mendoza, expect Greedy to spend a second season in the DSFL as he continues to build his TPE total. Even while his player is in the DSFL with the Royals, Sylphreni will likely be a valuable contributor to the Yeti war room from day one.

2) BAL DT - Tyler Montain
Tyler Montain of the Dallas Birddogs gets taken second overall by the Baltimore Hawks, and with an already impressive 257 TPE, Montain will provide an immediate boost to the Hawks defensive line. After Montain, the drop off at defensive tackle in this draft class was extremely large, so this was an easy decision for the Hawks here at number two. Amidships is another user that has been extremely active since joining the league, building up a large enough bank account that he should not have any troubles maxing out equipment for seasons to come. He will be a great addition to the Hawks locker room, adding to what is already a very young team, and like Sylphreni with the Yeti, he will be a welcome addition to the Hawks war room. Look for Montain to become one of the top defensive tackles in the league from the moment he steps onto the field.

3) HON LB - Heinrich Kackpoo
At pick number three, the Honolulu Hahalua get the best linebacker in the draft, Heinrich Kackpoo. A player that many were projecting to go number one overall, the Hahalua will be happy to add Kackpoo to their team. Kackpoo should compete for a day one roster spot, as Honolulu currently has a handful of inactive or no longer updating veteran linebackers on the roster. Whether or not he spends an extra season with Portland in the DSFL, expect Kackpoo to be a leader of the Hahalua defense for seasons to come.

4) ARI S - DB Jadakiss
After a tough offseason for the Outlaws secondary that saw Tyler Oles Jr leave in free agency and co gm and safety Quinn Hughes go inactive, the Outlaws add a talented young piece to that secondary, in safety DB Jadakiss. Even with the aforementioned losses, Jadakiss joins an Outlaws team that has arguably the largest collection of young talent in the league. With only one other safety on the roster, expect Jadakiss to join the Outlaws immediately. While a week ago this would have been seen as the final piece to the best young secondary in the league, this is still a great pick for Arizona and fills a big need for them at safety.

5) PHI DE - Tycker Om
With the fifth pick of the draft, the Philadelphia Liberty select defensive end Tycker Om. In a pick that was a bit of a surprise to some, the Liberty decided to pass on the higher TPE DE Son Goku, selecting Om instead. The Liberty were obviously impressed in their scouting and interviews with Mysa, and feel that he will be great addition to the team’s locker room and possibly war room as well. Tycker should be a day one starter for Philadelphia and will arguably be their best player on a defensive line filled with inactive veterans and low earning youngsters.

6) SJS WR - Tychondrius Hood
Ty Hood gets taken at number six overall by the San Jose Sabercats. After losing star wide receiver Action Jackson to the Yellowknife Wraiths in free agency, receiver was a big need for San Jose entering the draft. The S23 class was pretty stacked at wide receiver, and because of this many people were projecting that San Jose would wait to grab a receiver with a later pick. Instead, San Jose decided not to risk it, and made sure they got their guy here at number six. Hood will likely be an immediate call up for the Sabercats to play across from their breakout star receiver Deondre Thomas-Fox. With the retirement of QB Dan Wright, it remains to be seen how San Jose’s passing attack will fare under rookie QB Monty Jack. While they may experience some struggles this season, this is a young offense that should be among the best in the league in just a few seasons, and Ty Hood will be a big part of that.

7) SAR DE - Son Goku
With the first of back to back Sailfish picks, Sarasota addresses a big need at defensive line by taking DE Son Goku. At 262 TPE, Goku is one of the TPE leaders in his draft class. As the Hahalua only have one other DE on the roster (plus fellow S23 draftee Mike Karpaasi), it is likely that Goku will get called up for his rookie season. Honolulu will be counting on Goku and 2nd year DT Cuco Clemente to anchor their defensive line for many seasons.

8) SAR S - Raphael d’Alcott
With pick number eight, the Sailfish elected to help their defense even more, selecting safety Raphael d’Alcott. Secondary was a reasonably big need for the Sailfish as they do not currently have a nickel cornerback on their roster, and one of their two safeties on the roster prior to the draft is a fairly casual earner. d’Alcott will likely step in for Sarasota from day one, allowing the Sailfish to play one of their three safeties at nickel back. After the latest update, d’Alcott is 2nd in TPE in the draft class behind only Greedy Sly, having passed DB Jadakiss and L’Carpetron Dookmarriot (for now). d’Alcott has built up a solid bank account and should be a great addition to the Sailfish locker room. Sarasota will be counting on d’Alcott and Jamie Nikiah to form one of the top future safety tandems in the league.

9) HON CB - Ray-Ray Jackson
At pick number nine, we have our first corner taken in the draft, as Ray-Ray Jackson joins the expansion Hahalua. After the S22 draft which saw an unprecedented amount of CB talent available, there is high end talent available at the position again in the S23 draft, however there is quite a large drop off after the elite corners are taken. After failing to grab a corner that has remained active in last season’s draft, the Hahalua have just one cornerback on their roster, inactive Victor Moreno. It was clear that they would be looking to address that in the draft, so I’m sure they were quite pleased to have Ray-Ray still available for them at pick nine. Along with S22 safeties Shawn Dawkins and Buck Thornton, Ray-Ray Jackson joins a Honolulu secondary that will be a nightmare for quarterbacks in just a few short seasons.

10) YKW S - L’Carpetron Dookmarriot
L’Carpetron Doomarriot joins the Yellowknife Wraiths at pick number ten. The Wraiths are another team that doesn’t exactly have a lot of holes on their roster. While safety isn’t a huge need for them, you could argue that L’Carpetron represents the best player available. With S15 safety Chase Jensen inactive and now dealing with regression, the Wraiths will need to find his replacement. They did draft two safeties in the S22 draft, in Johnny Hellzapoppin and Magnus Valdyr, and both players remain active to this point. Valdyr’s TPE earning has been on the lower end of things however, and Dookmarriot can be expected to pass him in TPE in the next season or two. If all three of these safeties remain active and with the Wraiths, Yellowknife will likely look to play one of them at CB, as they do not currently have a nickel back on the roster, and they will additionally need to find the eventual replacement for S13 draftee Johnny Snuggles. Dookmarriot will likely spend one more season in the DSFL with Myrtle Beach before joining a Wraiths team that should be competing for Ultimus titles for seasons to come.

11) OCO S - Bob Bob
At pick eleven we have yet another safety being taken as the Orange County Otters select Bob Bob. Bob is the fifth safety to be taken in the first round. Bob Bob is the recreate of user nickyvmlp, who has a fairly decent bank account of over $200 million. Orange County is another team, like the Wraiths, that just don’t have a lot of holes that they need to address on their roster. They already have the best secondary in the league, with five players over 650 TPE and only one already dealing with regression. However Bob is a player that many were projecting to be drafted by now, and it appears that the value he presented here was just too much for the Otters to pass up. Bob will undoubtedly spend another season down in the DSFL but will help keep the Otters secondary strong down the road. It is picks like these where the Otters address a position well before it becomes a need, that has allowed them to compete for the Ultimus trophy season after season.

12) COL OL - Dick Thruster
With the final pick of the first round, the Colorado select, offensive lineman Dick Thruster. I believe this is the first offensive lineman taken in the first round in 10 seasons, so it truly is a great day for fair rubs. After taking Greedy Sly with the number one overall pick, and without many holes on their roster, the Yeti decided to add their first human offensive lineman to the roster. Recent work has been done by iSteg and others highlighting the value that human offensive lineman can bring to it team, so it should be no surprise to see them valued accordingly in the draft. Dick is one of only two high end o line prospects in the draft, along with Julio Jones. With an offensive line full of bots, there’s no reason to expect Thruster to remain in the DSFL. Expect him to begin anchoring the Yeti’s offensive line straight away.

13) CHI LB - Hingle McCringleberry
After trading away the first overall pick, the Chicago Butchers have their first pick of the draft as we enter round two. The Butchers have done a good job with their rebuild, and actually don’t have all that many holes on their roster. With that said, the Butchers added another linebacker in Hingle McCringleberry. This was a somewhat surprising pick, as Chicago already had three young, active (or at least semi-active) linebackers on their roster. The Butchers obviously liked what they saw in Hingle, and he will likely pass Perry Tucker Jr in TPE soon enough. McCringleberry should be a good addition to the Butchers both on and off the field as the franchise continues to try to turn things around.

14) PHI S - Eugene Smoothie
After helping their defensive line in round one, the Liberty select safety Eugene Smoothie here in round two. After drafting two corners and two safeties in last season’s draft to join veteran safety Richard D’Attoria V, Philadelphia did not exactly need secondary help. However, with corner Jonathan Altidor going inactive, and D’Attoria V well into regression, the Liberty will possibly look to move one of their talented young safeties over to corner. It looks as though Smoothie will be called up to the Liberty immediately, so there is a good chance that we will see him spend some time at corner this season.

15) ARI OL - Julio Jones
After drafting a couple of offensive linemen last season in Bruce Buckley and Calvin Golladay, the Outlaws are at it again here, selecting Julio Jones. The Outlaws are now the only team in the league that has more humans on their o line than bots. The Outlaws have had a massive haul of draft picks these past couple drafts, and it has allowed them to spend high draft picks on their offensive line. It will be interesting to see how this pays off for Arizona down the line. As mentioned earlier, there is a massive drop off in o line talent after Dick Thruster and Julio, as the best remaining OL has yet to hit 100 TPE.

16) AUS LB - Griffin Porter
Griffin Porter becomes the 3rd linebacker off the board as the Austin Copperheads select him at pick sixteen. The Copperheads don’t have too many holes on their roster, however they do only have one active linebacker, so Porter definitely fills a need for Austin. At 275 TPE, Porter has been earning steadily and should fit right in as he joins the Copperheads for his rookie season.

17) BAL S - CJ Riley
At pick seventeen, the Baltimore Hawks select safety CJ Riley. This is the first of four GM picks here in the second round. Riley started out as a defensive lineman, however he position switched to safety as the Hawks only safety on the roster was Walt Green, who still has a healthy TPE total, but is now deep in regression. CJ may not have the same TPE totals as some of the top safeties in the class, however huskies is a proven user in the league. His player can be expected to end up as one of the top safeties in the draft. Riley will join the Hawks for his rookie season and will be expected to be leader on this defense as he continues to improve. Riley joins a talented young secondary that is being built in Baltimore.

18) SJS DE - Water Chestnut III
Here we have another GM pick, as defensive end Water Chestnut III joins the Sabercats. Like CJ Riley, Chestnut does not quite have the TPE total as some of the top picks in the draft, however it is likely that we will see Chestnut close that gap as the seasons pass. With Chip Otle being inactive, San Jose did not have a single active DE on the roster, so this pick addresses a big need for the Sabercats. Chestnut will be an immediate call up for the Sabercats, who hope that he will be able to anchor their d line throughout his career.

19) ARI RB - Joseph Petrongolo
After already adding a safety and an offensive lineman here in the draft, the Outlaws look for more help on offense here, taking the first running back of the draft, in Joseph Petrongolo. Petrongolo is the top TPE running back in the draft, with only Nicholas Ayers right behind him, and a large gap after those two. With Baby Yoda being the only running back on Arizona’s roster, Petrongolo with definitely have a role to play on this team, forming a 1-2 punch with Yoda that the Outlaws hope they can ride for the foreseeable future. While Petrongolo will likely spend a second season in the DSFL to develop, he will be a big part of the Outlaws offense from the moment he joins the team.

20) BAL CB - LeSean Paris Crooks
With the 20th pick of the draft, the Baltimore Hawks select cornerback LeSean Paris Crooks. This is the third pick the Hawks have spent on defense and the second they’ve used on their secondary. Crooks is just a few TPE behind the leading TPE earning corner in the draft, Ray-Ray Jackson. While Crooks will spend one more season in the DSFL with the London Royal, when called up he will join S22 corners Ben Stackinpaper and Eldrick Avery to form one of the best younf trio of corners in the league. Add in their other second round pick CJ Riley, and this secondary should be a major strength of Baltimore’s for many seasons to come.

21) HON CB - Bane Ka’ana’ana
Another GM pick, and this time with a name that I can’t pronounce. After adding cornerback Ray-Ray Jackson in the first round, the Hahalua double dip at the position, adding Bane Ka’ana’ana to a young, talented secondary. This seems to be a trend around the league. With the number of high end defensive backs that were available in the S22 draft, we are seeing more of the same in this draft. As a result we have a number of teams that are building formidable secondaries. Honolulu is no exception with the additions of Jackon and Ka’ana’ana.

22) YKW WR - Kai Sakura
After adding secondary help in round one, the Yellowknife Wraiths select wide receiver Kai Sakura with the 22nd overall pick of the draft. Now this pick was a bit of a surprise. As I mentioned after their first round pick, the Wraiths don’t exactly have a lot of holes to fill on their roster, however wide receiver is a position that they are absolutely stacked at. Nate Swift has been one of the top receivers for years now, though he is now deep into regression. Bender Rodriguez and Willie Hardagain are both pre-regression receivers that have been waiting for their chance to step up as Swift gets older. On top of that, the Wraiths went out and added star receiver Action Jackson. After looking a bit closer, this pick starts to make a bit more sense. Hardagain is the youngest of the above mentioned receivers, however his TPE earning has been rather slow. After that, Bender is the next youngest, and he is a full five seasons older than Sakura. So while Sakura will definitely spend at least one, if not more, seasons in the DSFL, he is the top TPE earning wide receiver in the draft, and one of the top overall. He will likely pass Hardagain in TPE within a season or two, and by the time Jackson and Rodriguez hit regression, he will be ready to step in and be a star for Yellowknife.

23) OCO DT - Carl Wheezer
With pick 23, the Orange County Otter select defensive tackle Carl Wheezer. While the Otters already have two good young DTs on the roster in Big Edd and Rapid Eagle, their only defensive ends are inactive players with low TPE. It is likely that the Otters will look to play at least one of their three young DTs at defensive end. Wheezer is among the TPE leaders in his draft class, and represents the last of the elite defensive linemen available in the draft. After Wheezer, the best remaining defensive lineman is nearly 100 TPE below Wheezer. While he will likely spend one more season down in the DSFL, Wheezer’s user is a veteran in the league, and Orange County will be counting on them to be a leader both on and off the field.

24) NOLA LB - Adelie de Pengu
With the final pick of the second round, we have our final GM pick of the draft, as linebacker Adelie de Pengu joins the New Orleans Second Line. This is the first pick of the draft for New Orleans, and they will be happy to add to their linebacking corps here. With Quenton Bode suffering regression, Adelie de Pengu and Ugarth the Dissector will be relied on to quarterback the Second Line defense before too long.

Congrats to everyone that was drafted!
