DSFL Playoff Contenders

Week 14 of the DSFL has just wrapped up and the playoff seedings are finalized. Let’s find out who's in the playoffs, what their seedings are, and what the future may have in store for them.

We will start things off in the SFC South division. The first seed team there is none other than our regular season champions the Norfolk Seawolves won the division with an impressive 10-4 record. This team had a knack for finding the endzone where their pair of quarterbacks Suleiman Ramza and Luke Skywalker combined for a league best of 21 passing touchdowns. No other team even comes close to the amount of points that these two have scored over the air. The Seawolves started the year by winning their first 5 games in a row. The team looked near undefeatable until a 3 game losing streak came along that saw the Seawolves go an entire two and a half games without scoring a single touchdown. However the Seawolves snapped out of their funk almost as suddenly as they entered it, winning their final 4 games and scoring over twenty points each time.

Challenging the Seawolves for the right to represent the SFC South is the Dallas Birddogs. The team is entering the playoffs for the first time in it’s 3 season history with its first winning record of 9-5. It’s the Dallas defense that really makes this team a force to be reckoned with. Linebackers Bradley Owens and Blade McCoy make teams think twice about running the ball and if they try passing then Cornerback Tomage McGullager is ready to teach them a lesson straight out of his old alma mater the Delaware College of Art and Design. This team really came together in week 5 where they won 6 games in a row and all but guaranteed their playoff spot.

So how do these two teams match up? Well what we have here is your classic offense vs defense matchup. If the Birddogs defense can bottle up Ramza and Skywalker then they should be able to secure their victory but if they can’t contain them then we end up with a shootout and I don't think the Dallas offense will be able to keep pace in that situation.

Moving on to the NFC North we have our first seed winners coming in at a respectable 7-7 record it’s none other than the Kansas City Coyotes. Anytime a team wins it’s division with a .500 record you kind of have to scratch your head and wonder “what’s going on over there” but in the Coyotes defense it was a closely contested series where the last place team was only two wins away from the first place team. As for the Coyotes themselves there is genuinely a lot to be excited for if you're a fan of this team. Reginald Covington III is the QB sensation that’s sweeping the nation. Nicknamed “TheGentleman QB” Reginald led the league in passing yards with 2,570. On defense the Coyotes are tied for first in sacks with 30. .500 record or no there is absolutely no reason to believe that the Kansas City Coyotes can’t win it all this year.

Speaking of .500 records that is exactly where the second seed team finished as well. The 7-7 London Royals are returning to the playoffs looking to win their first Ultimini. The team started poorly losing their first 3 games. By week 8 they were only 2-6 and looked to be out of playoff contention entirely but instead of giving up the team entered desperation mode winning their next 5 games in a row before stumbling in the final game of the season missing out on home field advantage. It’s safe to say that the London Royals would not have gotten here without the leadership of it’s coaches and owners along with that of it’s quarterback Colby Jack. The former second overall pick has been with the team since its inception but this will be his final year with the team before he moves on to the ISFL. This is his last chance to win an Ultimini and I know the rest of his team wants to send him off with a ring on his finger.

This game is going to be close one way or the other. Both of these teams are pretty evenly matched and play a similar style of football. Both of these teams struggled the most when their defenses failed to slow down the opposing offense and the offense was forced to do the heavy lifting. Both teams excelled when the offense and defense could establish a rhythm together where the offense scores points and runs down the clock and the defense shuts out the opposition. Finally from a glance I would have to say that while the Coyotes might have a slight edge on the Royals in most categories the Royals are a much more well rounded team overall. Will that be enough. We will find out soon.
