*Examining Bias - Modern_Duke - 07-29-2020 Well, with the reveal of individual votes we get our first glimpse of how the awards sausage is made. And some people didn't like what they saw. Cries of 'bias' have rang out. So I wanted to take a closer look at who could remain objective. What I did was compare voting position on team members to actual voting result. So, if a player came in 3rd in award voting, but their team voted them to come in 1st, there is some bias there. If their team had instead voted them 3rd, in line with the rest of the voters, they did not display any bias. Got it? Oh, and I only looked at player awards, not GM or MDM. About 'Actual Finish' - I used relative, rather than absolute, position. Rather than treat all award winners as coming in 1st, I calculated position based on number of points received. A unanimous award winner (48 points) would get an Actual Finish of 1.00. A player who got 1 point out of possible 48 gets an Actual Finish of 3.9375. Basically, all award winners were not treated equal. Don't about the calculation, its fine. Why do it this way? Because voting someone higher than a near unanimous winner like Austin McCormick, who got 46 out of 48 possible points to win Tight End of the Year, would show more bias than voting someone higher than Louisana Purchase, who barely won Returner of the Year (ayyy) with 29 out of 48 points. About 'Vote' - Pretty straightforward. I used 4 if a player was left off the person's top 3. About Difference - So, with that in mind, the difference between a person's Vote and the Actual Finish shows the bias in each vote. If someone's Average Difference is -1.00, they on average voted their team members one whole spot higher than they deserved. If a Difference is positive, the voter actually showed, I don't know, I guess you would call it negative bias. Basically, the more negative the number gets, the more bias. Just the data. Well done! *Examining Bias - Lightnoir - 07-29-2020 I would call negative bias "objectivity" but that's neither here nor there. Really interesting piece; I personally think it's a little strange to have people's votes under such scrutiny. I wouldn't have even passed that rule, but it happened so here it is. And don't think I specifically mean you, it's been a league wide talking point today lol. Still, I respect you just presenting the data rather than stating any real opinion and stoking a flame. *Examining Bias - gucci - 07-29-2020 *Examining Bias - Buttersqauch101 - 07-29-2020 (07-29-2020, 09:03 PM)Lightnoir Wrote:I would call negative bias "objectivity" but that's neither here nor there.
