Player Bio

James Gath took a very different route compared to most DSFL prospects, going to a Division 2 school in Grand Valley State University, mostly due to his parent’s generous donations to the school. There, he absolutely crushed the competition, seemingly bored at times with the simple offenses he faced in D2 football. After four seasons with the team, including a D2 National Championship title in his junior season, with him being named the MVP, Gath declared for the DSFL Draft

Analysis by Chigg Bungus, ISFL Draft Specialist

Draft Projection: Round 1

NSFL Comparison: Korrin Abernathy

Overview

Physically dominant in one-on-one coverage, an incredible mind for football, a great open field tackler and strong value in the run game, Gath is one of the best cornerback prospects in the entire draft. He has elite burst and speed to both cover and stop any extra yards after the catch, his press technique is superb and he has the physicality to break up any sort of pass thrown his way.

Strengths

Hands are superb, great at both breaking up passes and getting underneath opposing receivers to rip the ball out

Truly rare foot speed and turnover

Enough size and speed to cover any receiver you put him against

Eliminates safe spaces for quarterbacks to throw to on vertical routes

Elite recovery will allow him to take more chances as a pro

Incredible range in systems like Cover 3

Knows when to tackle and when to unload a big hit

Weaknesses

Remains to be seen whether or not he can transfer his college success to the pros

Very little competition at GVSU meant he could usually win on routes with little effort

Struggles in red zone coverage against taller receiving threats

Stays attached to blocks from wideouts too long

Uses his feet rather than overall fluidity to open up his hips

Further Comments

“Physically and mentally, he’s everything you could want in a corner. The only knock against him, the only one, is that he played at a D2 school. That lack of strong competition might end up hurting him later down the line, but at some point you need to look past the trees and take in the whole forest, ya know?” - NSFC CB Coach
