*S24 ISFL Draft Summary/Recap - abh89 - 08-01-2020

ARIArizona OutlawsARI
1.6 | Gunner Thorbjornsson | WR | 212
2.6 | Adam Schell | LB | 209
2.8 | Taro Raimon | WR | 237
3.1 | Charlegmagne Cortez | QB | 212
3.6 | Sergio Kitchens | RB | 207
4.6 | Mattress Cadaire | LB | 171
5.6 | James Pazos | CB | 78
6.6 | Alpha Centauri | DT | 59

Arizona started off their draft with a bang by selecting Gunner Thorbjornsson with the sixth overall selection. Thorbjornsson lead all rookies in receiving yards in his first season in the DSFL and looks to be another weapon for Jay Cue on the Arizona offense. The rookie WR was one of four skill position players the Outlaws selected with their first five picks in the draft. It would appear they are trying to establish their future at the playmaking positions and look to have gotten great value with those picks. Something else to note from this group is the presence of three London Royals. Are we seeing a potential London to Arizona pipeline forming?

AUSAustin CopperheadsAUS
1.8 | Zoe Watts | RB | 268
3.11 | Korbin Brown | WR | 224
5.11 | John Price | CB | 67
6.11 | Nessie Joans | CB | 50

One of three teams in the S24 draft to end the draft with only four selections, Austin likely walked away with the steal of the first round in Zoe Watts. It was very unexpected to see Watts fall to the 8th pick, but Austin saw their opportunity to acquire a player they knew and loved from the Dallas organization, and they seized that opportunity by trading up from the 11th pick to the 8th pick. Watts is a TPE monster, but also a locker room leader willing to assist wherever help is needed. Austin was also able to find good value late in the third round in wide receiver Korbin Brown. Their two other picks are rather undeveloped, and will be spending a good deal of time in the DSFL in hopes of finding their way to the ISFL roster.

BALBaltimore HawksBAL
1.5 | Maverick Bowie | S | 225
2.4 | Captain Rogers | RB | 195
4.8 | Myles Smith | LB | 133
4.9 | Mai Fukushu | RB | 246
4.11 | Sasha Medved | DE | 108
5.5 | Thomas "The Tank" Engine | S | 84
5.8 | Bob Smith | DE | 98
5.9 | Logan Hex | WR | 63
6.5 | Axel E. Ratione | S | 77
6.8 | Ruhu Rush | S | 57
6.9 | Jordan Waffle | CB | 57

While Baltimore certainly landed some talented prospects early on in this draft, they also took advantage of some trades late in the draft to stockpile draft picks in the later rounds. It appears they were looking to grab several lower tier prospects hoping to find a diamond in the rough with nine of their eleven selections being in the fourth round or later. With Bowie and Rogers, the Hawks looks to bring a strong presence to their locker room and add new cornerstones for the future to the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. They also appear to have found great value in running back Mai Fukushu in the fourth round. Fukushu was one of the highest TPE prospects in the draft and was considered a first round pick in most mock drafts.

CHIChicago ButchersCHI
1.1 | Juan Domine | LB | 246
2.1 | Icebox Riposte | OL | 154
4.1 | Oliver Sloan | S | 124
5.1 | Crowbar Theeks | RB | 202
6.1 | Eliajah Williams | RB | 50
7.1 | Jason Polinger | S | 50

Few were surprised when Chicago’s selection was announced to kick off the S24 ISFL draft. The Butchers selected the consensus top rated prospect, Juan Domine. To anyone paying attention, Domine was the clear-cut best linebacker in the DSFL in S23 and should help bolster the Butchers’ defense for the foreseeable future. Following Domine though, Chicago’s picks become a bit more questionable.as their second and fourth round selections are being considered reaches by many draft analysts. We’ll keep an eye on them to see if they can prove the doubters wrong. Chicago did manage to grab a talented running back in the fifth round, but there are rumors of a bit of baggage that caused Theeks to slide that far. The Butchers’ will work diligently to keep Theeks in the fold, but it’s a very low-risk high-reward move.

COLColorado YetiCOL
1.9 | Melvin Murder-Moose | K/P | 195
2.2 | Joel Drake | S | 203
2.9 | Mattathias Caliban | QB | 251
3.9 | Nerdy Name | S | 154

Colorado made multiple moves in this draft, moving up to grab prospects they valued and dumping picks for cap space. With only four selections, the Yeti were tied for the fewest total picks in this draft but they made the most of every one of them. While the selection of a kicker/punter in the first round may have been a bit of a surprise to some, it’s clear that Murder-Moose will be an impact player for the Yeti and great for the locker room. They also found great value with their two second round selections in Joel Drake and Mattathias Caliban. Both are arguably the best prospect at their respective positions and will lock down the safety and quarterback positions in the future for Colorado.

HONHonolulu HahaluaHON
1.3 | Asher Montain | DE | 265
2.3 | Sigismund Sternenstaub | DT | 197
3.3 | Ragnar Krashwagen | TE | 173
4.3 | Ajay Krishna | OL | 109
5.3 | Tre'Darius J'Vathon | WR | 218
6.3 | Greg Young | TE | 50
7.3 | Jay McCowski | DE | 57

The Honolulu Hahalua used their first selection on the extremely talented Asher Montain, who should be a monster at DE for them. Mountain also looks to be a locker room leader that can help bring a winning mindset and culture into the Honolulu organization. Along with Montain, the addition of Sternenstaub will help fill in two of the weaker positions on the Hahalua defensive line after they’ve been able to develop a bit more. With their fifth round selection, Tre’Darius J’Vathon, they have a potential candidate for steal of the draft. Being able to snag one of the top five wide receivers in this draft in the fifth round was certainly unexpected for Honolulu, but they were pleased to see he was still available.

NOLANew Orleans Second LineNOLA
1.7 | Quentin Button | S | 246
2.5 | Busch Light | LB | 234
2.7 | Azarius Ranger | DE | 157
3.7 | Lebong Simwell | DT | 200
4.7 | Woodrow Brooks | DE | 135
5.7 | Juke Thomason | K/P | 94
6.7 | Sebastian Low | DE | 57

New Orleans navigated the S24 draft carefully and found value with their selections early and often. Outside of specialist Juke Thomason, the Second Line went all defense with their draft selections. Their first two picks are proven defensive playmakers in Quentin Button and Busch Light. Though his S23 campaign was overshadowed by first overall pick, Juan Domine, Light was an animal at linebacker for the London Royals and plans to bring that energy to the Second Line. They’ll also have the benefit of free Busch Light after each game in the locker room as part of his endorsement deal. New Orleans also added two defensive lineman from Minnesota in Azarius Ranger and Woodrow Brooks. Though Ranger and Brooks underachieved a bit in the DSFL, they have tremendous potential that New Orleans hopes to be able to unlock.

OCOOrange County OttersOCO
1.10 | Joseph Joestar | QB | 257
2.10 | Ne Mo | TE | 200
4.10 | Chad Simpson | DT | 129
5.10 | Grummy Bear | S | 130
6.10 | Gary Winthorpe | S | 50

This was a rather lackluster draft for the prestigious Orange County Otters. The bright spot of their class is Joseph Joestar, a talented QB that looks to be their QB of the future once Armstrong hangs up the cleats.Outside of Joestar though, only Ne Mo is worth mentioning. You could argue Ne Mo is the top tight end prospect in the draft, but that’s not saying much in a draft that is extremely shallow at an already low value position. This draft looks to be one that Orange County will feel the impacts of in the future unless they are able to supplement the team via other avenues.

PHIPhiladelphia LibertyPHI
1.11 | Dorothy Zbornak | DE | 222
2.11 | Jeremiah Zelos | LB | 157
3.8 | Macaroni Elephant | OL | 151
3.10 | Thomas Rose | LB | 107

Similar to Colorado, Philadelphia also did some maneuvering in this draft to move up and secure additional cap space leaving them with a league low four picks. The Liberty focused on shoring up their defense, using three of their four selections on defenders, headlined by the physical specimen that is Dorothy Zbornak. They also were able to grab the best offensive lineman in the draft in Macaroni Elephant. No work yet on how they plan to accommodate an elephant in the locker room, but I will continue to check back on this.

SJSSan Jose SabercatsSJS
1.2 | Joshua Campbell | WR | 252
3.2 | Rickie Vaughne | CB | 176
4.2 | Rashad Hilliard | CB | 145
5.2 | Petra Sabor | LB | 94
6.2 | Michael Cera | DT | 50
7.2 | Ashweather Cett | OL | 50

With Action Jackson leaving the team via free agency last season and other receivers being a bit long in the tooth, the Sabercats wide receiver group was in need of an infusion of youth. That made the decision with the second overall pick in the draft an easy one for them. The addition of Joshua Campbell will provide the spark that San Jose is looking for. Following Campbell, San Jose selected four straight players from the defensive side of the ball, headlined by cornerback duo Rickie Vaughne and Rashad Hilliard. They look to develop the pair of corners for some time before leaning on them to help shut down opposing defenses in future seasons.

SARSarasota SailfishSAR
1.4 | Harrison Andrews | DE | 215
3.4 | Mike Boss Jr. | QB | 203
3.5 | Zack Mouse | S | 178
4.4 | Arlington Heights | DE | 180
4.5 | Thad Pennington Jr. | OL | 113
5.4 | Blago Kokot | K/P | 143
6.4 | Timothy Martins III | RB | 50

Sarasota came into this draft with the plan to grab some extra draft picks to add some depth to their roster, but in the first round they had one prospect in mind, Harrison Andrews. Andrews is a freak on the defensive side of the ball that Sarasota will look to move around on the depth chart and get him out of the defensive end position that he played in London. The opportunity to acquire more picks presented itself in the second round though as Baltimore offered their third and fourth round picks for Sarasota’s second rounder. With one of those third round selections, the Sailfish added their quarterback of the future, Mike Boss Jr. The bloodline is certainly there with this quarterback, but time will tell if he is able to live up to his father’s reputation. Sarasota also found nice value in Zack Mouse and Arlington Heights as they look to add more depth to their defense.

YKWYellowknife WraithsYKW
1.12 | Brach Thomaslacher | LB | 236
2.12 | Sam Howitzer | QB | 261
3.12 | Alejandro Chainbreaker | LB | 256
4.12 | Frank Michell | TE | 139
5.12 | Delta Airlines | LB50
6.12 | Nacho Davis | TE | 50

This draft class for Yellowknife appears to be an example of the rich getting richer. Fresh off of their Ultimus winning season in S23, the Wraiths came into this draft and knocked their first three selections out of the park. In the first and third rounds, they were able to grab two of the top five linebackers in this draft class. Usually known for their offensive firepower, Yellowknife hopes Thomaslacher and Chainbreaker will help shore up their defense to help the offense out. With the last pick of the second round, the Wraiths were also able to grab the top rated quarterback in this class in Sam Howitzer. This was an interesting selection as the Wraiths appear to be set at the position with Colby Jack set to start this season. It’s probably a bit too early to speculate, but we may be heading towards a quarterback controversy in Yellowknife.
