*Grey Ducks week 3 analysis - ThunderTitan82 - 08-21-2020

The Minnesota Grey Ducks travelled to Portland in the second game of their double header. At this point Minnesota was winless, and the Pythons were 1-1 making it something of a must win for Minnesota. This week Im going to do things a bit differently. Im going to go over the scoring summary first, then breakdown the play of each teams best players from the game, as well as some honorable mentions from the Grey ducks. So lets get started.

FIRST QUARTER
The game started off slowly on offense with neither team being able to gain much ground. The first quarter saw three field goals and some stellar defensive play. The Grey Ducks scored first on a 45 yard field goal by Brasky. Pseudo QB then nailed two kicks through, from forty four and forty seven respectively. At first quarters end the Pythons had the lead 6-3.

SECOND QUARTER
The second quarter begins with a Grey Duck field goal, Brasky hits an easy one from thirty one yards out to tie the game 6-6. The Pythons responded with a 30 yard kick to retake the lead, 9-3 Portland. Then, with about a little over a minute left in the half, Minnesota QB Sim Snowbow hits WR Noah Akerele for the games only touchdown, a four yard pass. Brasky makes the extra point, 13-9 Minnesota at the half.

THIRD QUARTER
Portland scored the first and only points in the thrid quarter, a 44 yard field goal to make it a one point game, 13-12 Minnesota. Defense reigned supreme in the third quarter, a close game throughout, when the fourth quarter starts its anyones to win.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Grey Ducks scored first in the fourth quarter. A 47 yard fieldgoal by Brasky who made the score 16-12. The Pythons responded with a field goal from 43 yards out to make it a one point game yet again at 16-15. The Grey Ducks finally sealed the deal with a 45 yard field goal in the games final seconds.

FINAL SCORE : 19 -15 Minnesota.

Offensively the Grey Ducks continued to have trouble. Although they did manage to finish the game strong and win, capitalizing with touchdowns instead of field goals is a must have in the future. Starting at quarterback :

QB - both quarterbacks threw an interception, however Sim Snowbow had the games lone touchdown pass, completing 10/20 passes and throwing for 101 yards. He averaged 10.1 yards per pass, finishing with a rating of 60.6. On the Python side of the ball Howitzer was 17/35, 0 TDs and 1 Int with a rating of 51.2.

Grey Ducks get the edge at QB simply for the touchdown pass. Howitzer moved the ball slightly better and had more yards, but couldnt hit paydirt against the punishing Grey Ducks Defense.

RB : Rotchburns gets the win at the running back position this week. He had 18 carries for 82 yards and a 4.6 average with a long of 10 yards. He was a powerhouse all game, hammering the Pythons defense. Vermillion and both Python running backs had good games, all finishing around 15 carries and about 60 yards, not enough to edge out Rotchburns who was the dominant rusher in this ball game.

Edge : Grey Ducks Mike Rotchburns.

WR - the top reciever in this game actually came from portland with K. Brown. He finished with 5 catches for 78 yards and a long of 38. He was constantly open and making plays. However he just couldnt get to the endzone. A few honorable mentions go to Portlands Batista, who had 5 catches for 40 yards. Minnesotas Killian Chambers who had 3 catches for 36 yards, and Noah Akerele who had the games only touchdown pass. A few other players made a big impact to the passing game, like Minnesotas Cleg Manclaw, and Willy Weasel, or Portlands Cutta, however they didnt make as much of an impact as the others.

Edge - Portland WR K. Brown.

TE - Minnesotas Cleg Manclaw had 3 catches for 15 yards, he was. Reliable target, and made the catcg when called upon. He also had a pancake, helping out the line blocking. For portland Batista had 5 catches for 40 yards. If the yard totals were closer the help blocking would make more of a differenece, however Batista made it happen in the passing game giving them the edge.

Edge - Portland

K - Both kickers hit 100% of their field goals, and they both made one from 47 yards out so this is a hard one. Neither kicker played any better than the other, so Im going to give them a tie. Had one of them made a 50 yarder, or had a kick longer than the others id give them the edge, and yea, Pseudo QB hit one more field goal, but I cant say that Brasky would have missed that, he made an extra point from the touchdown instead. Both kickers played superbly and should be commended.

TIE

OL - This is another hard one to judge. Minnesotas line only gave up one sack, however they had less pancakes with 13 total. Portland on the other hand gave up two sacks but had 17 pancakes. In the end I feel that less sacks is better, and Minnesota had more rushing yards, so even though they arent pancaking defenders they are making holes and protecting the QB. The standout lineman from Minnesota was T. Shaft who had 4 pancakes. The best lineman of the day however was Portlands M. Hamel who had 6 pancakes and allowed 0 sacks.

Edge - Minnesota. Less sacks and more rushing yards = win

LB - it was a tough choice at linebacker. On Minnesota you have Chainbreaker who had another standout performance with 9 tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack. However on Portland who had Smith who had 11 tackles and 2 pass defense. They both made big impacts to the game in different ways, one more in rushing and pass rush, the other in coverage, so the edge is going to fall on the next LB begind them. Minnesotas Rookie Phenom Wasrabi Gleel had 9 tackles and a pass defense, while Portlands Martinsson had 7 tackles. Minnesota will get the edge at Linebacker because they ultimately had more linebackers generating more results in more ways.

Edge - Grey Ducks.

DT - For Minnesota the top DT of the game was Davis. He only had one tackle but it was a crucial sack. For Portland its between Cerilli and Haywood.
Haywood had 3 tackles, while Cerilli had 2 with a tackle for loss. Im inclined to give the edge to Cerilli because the TFL is more detrimental to the opposing offense. But both of these DTs for Portland played well enough to get them the edge.

Edge - Portland

DE - Two Minnesota DEs, Ranger, and Van Sanzo each had 3 tackles and a tackle for loss. In Portland Slayer had 3 tackles, and Hoffman had 2 tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack. DE is one of the closest positions so far, Im almost ready to give portland the edge because of the sack, but I cant look past the fact that both Grey Duck DEs had 3 tackles, and a TFL each. To me that is slightly more advantagepus to the team as a whole. The player edge goes to Hpffman here, but the team edge goes to minnesota.

Edge - Minnesota, But Hoffman played well.

CB - For Minnesota, Hilliard was the best cornerback. He only secured 4 tackles, but he broke up two passes. In Portland, Anabender wins it despite only having 2 tackles. He had a pass defense and the teams only INT. Even though Hilliard, Lenkins and Gath with the other Minnesota corners had more tackles, I cant look past the INT from Anabender. He gets the edge to Portland.

Edge - Portland and Anabenders INT.

SS - Minnesotas Strong Safety Sloan finished the game with 4 tackles, a pass defense and an INT. Portlands Lavigne had 6 tackles but failed to impact the ball in the air at all. This gives the edge to Minnesota. Both Stong Safeties played really well, however Sloans INT and impact on the passing game cant be overlooked here.

Edge - Minnesota and Sloans INT.

FS - Portlands Free Safety Drake finished the game with tackles. Damian Blackfyre of the Grey Ducks had two tackles and a pass defense. Part of me wants to give Minnesota the edge for the pass defense, but Drake had four tackles as opposed to two. That might not seem a lot but it makes a difference on the field. If Blackfyre had 3 tackles instead of 2, to tighten that gap is give him the edge. But as it stands, botg Free Safeties played an average game at best, but the edge goes to Drake and Portland.

Totals
QB - Grey Ducks
RB - Grey Ducks
WR - Portland
TE - Portland
K - Tie
OL - Grey Ducks
LB - Grey Ducks
DT - Portland
DE - Minnesota
CB - Portland
SS - Minnesota
FS - Portland

The game was close throughout with each team not able to get a True advantage in any one area. However the ducks running game having a slight edge, and Sim Snowbows touchdown pass, gave them the boost they needed to get the job done in the end. The Minnesota defense not allowing a touchdown was a big part of the win, however the Portland defense was effective against a mostly mediocre Minnesota passing attack. Both teams have a lot of areas to work on, but could be one of the teams to challenge Norfolk come the end of the season.
