Lets talk about the trio of linebackers for the Portland Pythons, because at least one of them deserves some hardware and its still too close to call who is in the lead at this point. All three of them have been stalwart and dependable members of the defense, and without their contributions the Pythons' defense would be in deep, deep trouble. Let's take a look at all three here and see if we can't decide the order.

Myles Smith, S24: 53 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 1 interception, 5 pass defends
The leading linebacker when it comes to the pass game, Smith also leads the team in sacks and is near the top in pass defends. His coverage skills have been crucial in stopping the pass attack of a number of teams, and he's even contributed an interception to the cause. However, because he's a S24 player, the list of awards he's eligible for is lower when compared to the other two primary linebackers for the Pythons, who are rookies. Those three forced fumbles lead the league, but Myles will need to be able to further distance himself from players like Chainbreaker if he is going to win some hardware for himself, but a few more interceptions and some sacks to his his name should help.

Matty Martinsson, S25: 52 tackles, 1 pass defend.
Our first rookie on the list, Martinsson had a slow start to his first season in the league. However, he's come on strong in recent weeks, leading the team in tackles in several games. He is only one tackle behind Myles, though does need to work on his contributions in other areas of the field. Martinsson is skilled, but unfortunately he's matched up with a pair of linebackers that might be hogging the spotlight and some of the big plays that he'd like to make. If he can find himself some sacks or more action in the coverage game, and keeps on his recent tackle pace, he could factor into the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Donald McBobby, S25: 42 tackles, 1 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 interception, 2 pass defends
What a beast. Donald McBobby started the season like he was shot out of a cannon, with impact plays happening all over the field. Since then, McBobby has seen his tackle numbers slip a bit, which may be due to the ascendance of Smith and Martinsson on the field. McBobby is still able to find himself on the stat sheet however, contributing sacks and some help in the coverage game as well. When the season started, McBobby was a basically a lock for at least Defensive Rookie of the Year and potentially the big boy Defensive Player of the Year, but he's going to have to keep this torrid pace and start making more noise in the tackle and sack department. if he can get back on track to his earlier form, the rest of the league is going to have to watch out.

All in all, Myles Smith is probably having the best season right now out of these three, but its very very close and you can probably convince me easily to give the nod to McBobby's contributions outside of the tackle department, and Martinsson's strong play in recent weeks. We'll need the rest of the season to see where these talented linebackers finally land, but they are all off to great starts and may have some hardware coming their way in the future.

Question: Is Mai Fukushuu in the running for Offensive Rookie of the Year? Short answer: No. Long answer is obviously more complicated because it’s the longer answer. You see, Fukushuu is a true rookie, which means that she has significantly less TPE than her peers. The thing about the NSFL is that when it comes to the lower ranges of TPE, a small difference in TPE is a lot of difference in ability. Once the player gets up to around 900-ish, that difference becomes minimal. But despite this massive disadvantage, Fukushuu is actually doing pretty well when it comes to offensive rookies. The only “rookie” with more rushing yards is Nicholas Ayers, a player who is a full season ahead of her and almost 100 more TPE than her. She’s over Joseph Petrongolo, who has even more TPE. And even outside of the running back position, Kai Sakura may be having an excellent season, but they also have that massive TPE advantage over Fukushuu. So at the end of the season, will Fukushuu be getting any individual awards? Probably not. She’s not a starter, she’s got fairly average numbers for a backup, and she’s got the stigma of having this asshole behind the keyboard. But does she have an argument? I think so.

The London Royals really do have an overwhelming amount of talent on either side of the ball. For the purposes of this write-up, I will be focusing on one player from the offense, and one player from the defense.

Offense

Gunner Thorbjornsson, WR: 32 receptions (DSFL-leading), 457 receiving yards (DSFL-leading), 1 touchdown

While Gunner's touchdown numbers might be lacking when compared to some other receivers in the league, do not let that distract you from the integral role that he has played in the Royals' passing offense. While they certainly are not lacking talent at the running back position, the Royals have opted for more of a passing offense this season, which through a combination of volume and talent, Gunner has made the most of. He leads all receivers in the DSFL in both receptions and receiving yards, an impressive feat. Gunner is the lifeblood of the Royals passing game, and if he can see more touchdowns come his way then he makes a very strong candidate for DSFL wide receiver of the year.

Defense

Juan Domine, LB: 45 tackles, 5 TFL's, 5 sacks, 4 passes defended

For anybody who watched Juan Domine play last season, his performance this season should come as no surprise. The first overall pick in the S24 ISFL draft, Domine returns to London this season as the quarterback of the defense. London's defense has been stout this season largely thanks to players like Domine. While not leading in any one statistical category, Domine puts up numbers across the board; he can really do it all. Domine could very well repeat this season as a DSFL award-winner, and not on name recognition alone. Simply put, the dude is a stud.

The standout leader for any postseason award on the Coyotes has to be rookie offensive tackle Clay Stallworth. The 7th OL drafted in the most recent DSFL draft at this point has to be the favorite for offensive lineman of the year. Stallworth leads all offensive linemen with a whopping 30 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed through six games. That first number puts him on pace to just beat the all-time DSFL record for pancakes in a season - 70 vs. the existing record 67. This leads the DSFL, with only 1 player within 5 of him. The Coyotes have run the second fewest offensive plays of any team, meaning that on a per-snap basis Stallworth's results have been even more impressive. While nothing is certain with 8 games left to play, I would be quite surprised if Stallworth didn't win this award.

Another strong contender on the Coyotes is a potential repeater in S23 Tight End of the Year Rigby Raccoon. Rigby had a great year in S23 with 58 catches for 656 receiving yards (11.3 ypc) and 2 touchdowns, plus 17 pancakes and 1 sack allowed in the blocking game. This year he is on pace to beat all of those already impressive marks as the KC passing game has taken a leap forward. Through 6 games, Rigby has 32 catches (tied for the DSFL lead among all players!) for 356 yards (11.1 ypc) and 2 touchdowns, plus 11 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed. There is no other tight end in the DSFL who has had such an impact both catching and blocking as Rigby, so it will come down either to great performances by other players or to voter fatigue if he doesn't repeat.

Rookie of the year is an award where you only get one shot, one opportunity, to win the award in your career. Right now, the Offensive rookie of the year looks to be coming to Yellowknife, but the player who wins it is still to be determined.
Although rookie QBs often struggle in their first season in the big leagues, Colby Jack has not had that issue. The young QB has racked up over 2000 yards through the first 9 games, a very respectable total and is currently leading the league in TDs, 3 above the next QB. His competition as other rookie QBs are Ben Slothisberger and Luke Skywalker. Although Sloth has a marginally higher passer rating, he is 7 TDs behind Colby Jack which should make a big difference to the selection committee. Skywalker is closer at 14 TDs but has almost 500 yards less even at this stage of the season.
The other high performing offensive rookie this season is Kai Sakura. The young wide receiver is keeping up with some veteran names and is in contention for leading receiving TDs, only 1 back from the lead. His 623 yards show he is already a true WR1 and the rookie to rookie combination has been vital for Yellowknife’s rejuvenated offence this season.

As far as awards go, I thought it would be worth discussing the easy award winning performance of the year that Dermot Lavelle Jr. had Week 8 against the Wraiths. To start, he would have an 83 yard punt return for a touchdown in the 1st quarter. This putting Austin up 14-0 fairly early in the game. With 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Dermot would have an interception to add to his amazing game. This all but putting the game away as Austin began to run up the lead. Not stopping there, Dermot would have another interception only 3 minutes later. This interception was returned for a touchdown, his second of the game! Not too shabby for a defensive player. Throughout the game, Dermot was still adding chaos to the field when not ball hawking. He would tally 4 tackles and break up 2 other passes. If this performance isn’t the best we will see defensively throughout the season, it is going to take quite the game for someone to break it. Many in Austin’s locker room had been demanding Dermot to be traded prior to the game however he would silence all of his doubters with this amazing performance. All of the fans lucky enough to be there will truly never forget it and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this being another award to his great season.
