*DSFL recap weeks 9-11 - LB3737 - 11-08-2020

Since I have fallen seriously behind on my recapping of the DSFL, and the playoffs are now almost upon us, I have decided for this media I’m going to fast track it and write a 3-in-1, of weeks 9-11, as it is just too much work for me to write 3 more separate media’s, especially if I want to have this series completely finished by the time the playoffs roll around. Obviously that means there’s going to be a trade off in the formatting of my articles. I’m going to be cutting out the awards sections aswell as the power rankings, as I am under time pressure, and the actual recaps themselves will probably take a hit in length too.

WEEK 9

Game 1 : Minnesota Grey Ducks MIN (4-4) @ Dallas Birddogs DAL (1-7), Birddogs win 23-7

Minnesota went to Dallas already looking ahead to their week 10 matchup against Myrtle Beach, which turned out to be a big mistake as the Birddogs ended up beating them, convincingly enough as well. This loss is a big blow to the Grey Ducks playoff aspirations in their already very tight division.

An excellent rushing performance from both teams backs, with Rotchburns getting 106 yards and a touchdown for the Grey Ducks and Kai getting 121 and a touchdown for the Birddogs. On defense Leaking and Chainbreaker both had double digit tackles, with 11 each, but no other stats. As well as this Gleel forced the only turnover of the game, forcing running back Miglaskems to fumble and than recovering it himself.

Game 2 : Norfolk Seawolves NOR (2-6) @ Kansas City Coyotes KCC (5-3), Coyotes win 23-3

A much expected win for Kansas City at home to Norfolk here, which brings them 2 games ahead of 3rd and 4th in their division in the race for the second playoff spot. They dominated the game against a pretty poor Seawolves side, and the scoreline hardly does it justice, as they completely outclassed their opponents on both sides of the ball.

Again in this game there were a couple of monster rushing performances. For Norfolk Mr. Forty Two was trying to it all for his offense, rushing 32 times for a massive 150 yards, while on the other team the carries were more evenly distributed, with Tutankhamun getting 20 and Kitchens getting 17. That earned them 211 rushing yards between them, with a Tutankhamun getting 2 touchdowns to boot. On defense the Coyotes had a blast as well, sacking Norfolk qb Rune 5 times, each sack coming from a different player.

Game 3 : Portland Pythons POR (4-4) @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers BBB (6-2), Buccaneers win 20-18

It was a devastating loss for Portland in Myrtle Beach to give them a negative record for the first time this season, and their fifth loss in 6 games. The Buccaneers will be happy that they got their 7th win of the season, however might be a bit disappointed at how close they left the game, as on offense they out-gained the Pythons by over 110 total yards, but turned the ball over twice.

Rookie Pythons receiver Rocky Jackman was easily his quarterbacks favourite target in this game having 6 catches for 106 yards, including a 48 yard grab to set them up in position to score a touchdown. Opposing quarterback Jackie Daytona also had a great day, with more than 250 yards passing plus 2 TDs. Pythons tackle Chuck Roth also had a great day getting his teams only sack and a safety as well, while for MB Hoffman got his teams only sack.

Game 4 : London Royals (6-2) LON @ Tijuana Luchadores TIJ (4-4), Royals win 30-9

Royals put on another show of dominance, this team showing up the Luchadores in their own house, rather emphatically. The Royals racked up 430 total offensive yards, 161 more than their opponents measly 269. This win basically secures a playoff spot for London, and luckily for Tijuana, their division isn’t great, with 3rd and 4th both having just 2 wins, so they are also very likely to be playing postseason football this year, despite this loss.

Royals quarterback Cortez had a nice day, completing 18 passes for 246 yards and 2 TDs. 7 of those passes went to receiver Speedman, who also played well, turning those receptions into 102 yards, including a 7 yard touchdown. On defense for London, Sarrasin got a very nice defensive touchdown, a three yard pick six. On the bright side for Tijuana, two of their defenders, McMullet and Jones, had more than 10 tackles.

WEEK 10

Game 1 : Norfolk Seawolves (2-7) NOR @ London Royals LON (7-2), Royals win 14-3

Coming off the back off of a big away win for the Royals, everyone expected them to go out and blow the Seawolves out of the water. Despite still getting the win, this game was not the fireworks everyone thought it was going to be, but instead a rather drab, 3 score affair. Neither offense could get much going all game and combined for 19 punts between them.

Neither teams quarterback managed above 155 yards passing in this game with the only passing touchdown of the game coming from an 8 yard connection between Cortez and Speedman. In contrast to that both teams main running backs were great with Forty Two getting 128 yards and Yaki getting 123 yards and a touchdown. The defenses on both sides played considerably better than their offensive counterparts, racking up 10 sacks and 9 PDs between them, however neither unit managed to force a single turnover.

Game 2 : Myrtle Beach Buccaneers BBB (7-2) @ Minnesota Grey Ducks MIN (4-5), Grey Ducks win 48-10

I’m beginning to notice a trend between all of Myrtle Beaches losses, which is that when they lose, they get absolutely blown out. In week 2 they lost by 34, in week 8 they lost by 17 and this week, number 10 they’re after losing by a whopping 38 points in a complete football schooling courtesy of the Minnesota Grey Ducks, who were looking to right the ship after taking a tough beat down from Dallas just the week prior.

It was an uncharacteristically bad performance by the Myrtle Beach offense, with qb Daytona throwing 2 interceptions their 2 running backs only combining for 105 yards. It was a dream offensive performance for the Grey Ducks however, with both Ryan Negs and Rotchburns getting a hat trick of touchdowns each. The Grey Ducks defense also played well, albeit not as fantastic as their offense, recording 4 sacks and 8 PDs.

Game 3 : Kansas City Coyotes KCC (6-3) @ Portland Pythons POR (4-5), Pythons win 31-13

This was a must win game for the Pythons if they wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive, as a loss would put them 3 games behind with just 4 left in the season. They didn’t succumb to the pressure and managed to boss a very good Kansas City team, cruising to an 18 point victory over the Coyotes.

The Kansas City offense were not able to get anything going all game, converting just 2 third downs and racking up only 215 total offensive yards, less than half that of Portland’s. Their only touchdown of the game came on special teams, a 60 yard punt return by Wildstar to the house. On the bright side for KC they had 3 defenders with 10 or more tackles, but that can probably be attributed to Portland having the ball for over 40 minutes. Portland on the other hand, played great football, with their two workhorse backs getting 254 yards rushing between them on 47 carries. Wide Receiver Mario Messi also had a great game, with 10 catches for 97 yards and 2 TDs.

Game 4 : Dallas Birddogs DAL (2-7) @ Tijuana Luchadores NYS  (4-5), Birddogs win 15-10

Despite losing the week prior, a win against one of the worst teams in the league in a Dallas would basically secure postseason football for the Luchadores, yet a win is not what they finished with, losing by just 5. Dallas managed to get their first winning streak of the season after last weeks victory, and all of a sudden, being only a game behind, the Birddogs look like they could potentially qualify for the playoffs, despite losing their first six games of the season.

The game overall was not particularly eventful and not many players had great stats, with the index giving OPOTG to Dallas kicker Catmas. The usually solid running back Cobra Kai had an uncharacteristic 3.8 YPC and qb Caliban threw for just 89 yards. Neither defensive unit managed a turnover, despite Mann forcing a fumble. There were however, 2 players who had 10+ tackles, 1 on each team.

WEEK 11

Game 1 : Kansas City Coyotes KCC (6-4) @ Dallas Birddogs DAL (3-7), Coyotes win 27-14

Despite leading by 11 in a game that would have done wonders for their playoff push, the Birddogs allowed 24 points in the fourth quarter to a Coyotes offense that had not done much else all game and ended up losing. A big win for KC in their attempts to make the playoffs, as well as making a statement that they can come back from a deficit and win.

The Kansas City offense didn’t play excellently, but were efficient enough get the job done, with quarterback Peterson throwing for 2 TDs and running back King Tutankhamun rushing for 106 yards, including a massive 64 yard touchdown. They will be delighted with their defense, who forced 2 turnovers withthe only INT of the game coming from Clark, and Maine recovering a fumble forced by Rose. Birddogs back Kai returned to his usual form with 116 yards rushing with a touchdown to boot and on defense their main man Leaking forced and recovered a fumble, their only takeaway on the day.

Game 2 : London Royals (7-3) LON @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers BBB (7-3), Buccaneers win 17-9

London travelled to Myrtle Beach for what looked like one of the best fixtures of the season, and a good chance of being the Ultimini matchup. The game failed to meet expectations, and was rather boring, resulting in an 8 point win for the Buccaneers, giving them the lone best record in the league at 8-3.

Neither offense was particularly good on the day combining for just 594 total yards and the qbs throwing for 102 and 173 yards respectively. Despite London not registering a single turnover they just could not manage to get the ball into the endzone. On defense they failed to register a single sack, with Burfict getting the only takeaway on either side, an interception. Myrtle Beach did what London could not, and scored two touchdowns. One was a 4 yard rush from running back Chungus, aswell as a 72 yard punt return from Zach Crossley, easily the games highlight play.

Game 3 : Minnesota Grey Ducks MIN (5-5) @ Norfolk Seawolves NOR (2-8), Grey Ducks win 20-0

The Grey Ducks went to the team with the worst record in the league, Norfolk, and managed to shut them out, a win that was vital in their playoff push, with all the other teams in their division playing well.

Grey Ducks running back Rotchburns had an incredible game in this one, rushing for 160 yards on 21 carries, an average of 7.6 YPC, including a 59 yard touchdown rush in the first quarter. Quarterback Negs had another average game, passing for 170 yards, but got a touchdown on his feet however. On defense the Grey Ducks sacked the opposing qb 3 times and forced an interception, coming from Blackfyre. For Norfolk, their quarterback Rune had a very bad game completing just 9 passes for 86 yards and an interception. Despite only having 1 turnover, the offense was forced into 9 punt and had the ball for just over 20 minutes. Their defense did get better stats, registering 8 PDs, aswell as Tenners having 13 tackles, however there’s simply nothing they could do when their offense can’t score.

Game 4 : Tijuana Luchadores TIJ (4-6) @ Portland Pythons POR (5-5), Pythons win 24-6

Portland needed a win when Tijuana visited them, as all the other teams they are competing for a playoff spot won as well, and they did manage to triumph over the Luchadores, who are not out of the woods just yet with regards to the playoffs, as Dallas are just a game behind them.

The Tijuana offense had a very rough day, especially quarterback Mike Boss Jr. who threw 146 yards and an interception, and nobody on the offense managed a score, with their only points coming from their kicker. The defense did manage to force a turnover, an interception from Triplet. For Portland LeBron James III did have a slightly better game than his rival qb, throwing for 8 yards more as well as a TD to receiver Mario Messi. The defense played stellar football, getting 5 sacks, between 5 different players, as well as safety Moe Skeeter getting an interception which he returned 45 yards to the house.

That concludes Weeks 9-11, hopefully I’ll be able to get 12-14 out before the playoffs, and to anyone who read this far and enjoyed, thank you, this will probably be the format for these media’s going forward, if I decide to continue them next season, except they might include awards sections and power rankings.
