*What difference does a season make? - huck24 - 11-24-2020

I wrote an article after last seasons (S25’s) ISFL draft.  I looked at the previous DSFL draft and compared where these players got drafted in their ISFL draft.  I wanted to see what changes, major or minor, happened between the two drafts.  Now that my player has gone through both drafts, I wanted to re-visit this and see what a season in the DSFL did for all of my fellow S26 draftees.  So here goes:

1st overall – Berlin Fire Salamanders – LB - BamBam McMullet

BamBam is a great player and showed that during his rookie campaign in the DSFL.  The linebacker from the Tijuana Luchadores had a very impressive season and all of the ISFL noticed that.  It also helped that BamBam’s user, manicmav26, is legendary in the league and Berlin wasn’t going to let him get away.  Being picked 1st overall, McMullet moved up 5 spots between the two drafts, with Tijuana selecting him with the 6th overall pick in the DSFL.

2nd overall – New York Silverbacks – S - Dogwood Maple

Dogwood Maple was drafted in the 7th spot in the DSFL draft, so it seems fitting that he followed one spot behind BamBam McMullet again.  Dogwood was drafted first by the Norfold Seawolves and had a very solid rookie season as a safety, with 84 tackles and 6 sacks.  Just like McMullet, Maple moved up 5 spots between the two drafts.

3rd overall – Baltimore Hawks – DE – Ernest Lover

I’m starting to see a trend here.  Lover was picked behind Maple, who was behind McMullet for the second time in a row.  Ernest was drafted 8th overall, with the last pick of the first round, in the DSFL draft by the London Royals.  This time around, Lover went 3rd overall, after a season in which he had 75 tackles, 11 for a loss and 8 sacks.  Like the two players above, Lover moved up 5 spots in the draft.

4th overall – Yellowknife Wraiths – WR – Arthur Naught

Bucking the trend that we’ve been seeing, Naught is the first player to move more than 5 spots up in the draft.  Naught was drafted by the Kansas City Coyotes with the 5th pick in the 2nd round (13th overall) in the DSFL draft.  Naughts play in the DSFL caught the eyes of the Wraiths, his 63 receptions for 720 yards and a TD was enough to move him up 9 spots from one draft to another.

5th overall – New Orleans Second Line – LB – Vincent Jones Jr

Here we go again, Vincent Jones Jr was selected 14th overall (6th pick of the 2nd round) in the DSFL draft, right behind Arthur Naught, who was selected one spot ahead of him in the ISFL draft as well.  The Tijuana Luchadores selected the linebacker, just like the #1 overall pick, BamBam McMullet.  Jones had a solid rookie season, leading all rookie defenders in tackles  (110) and sacks (9).  His close ties, from Tijuana, helped him land a spot in New Orleans.  And just like Naught, he moved up 9 spots in the draft order.

6th overall – Philadelphia Liberty – QB – Ryan Negs

Ryan Negs was the first overall selection in the DSFL draft, having been picked by the Minnesota Grey Ducks in the number one spot. Negs showed the league what he could do, throwing over 250 completions for just under 2500 yards for the Ducks.  The Liberty liked what they saw and selected the first QB of the draft in the sixth spot, which means Negs is the first player to drop spots between the two drafts, he slipped 5 spots.

7th overall – Honolulu Hahalua – RB - Cobra Kai

Here we go again, guess who got drafted right before Cobra Kai in the DSFL draft, none other then Ryan Negs.  Cobra Kai was taken 2nd overall in the DSFL draft by the Dallas Birddogs.  Kai performed well for Dallas, with 278 carries for just under 1500 yards and 8 TDs.  He also sported the best average yards for a carry for all RBs with over 50 touches.  Unsurprisingly, Corba Kai dropped 5 spots just like Negs.

8th overall – Chicago Butchers – OL - Alexander Franklin

With the 8th overall pick, the Butchers went with offensive lineman Franklin.  In the DSFL draft, Franklin was picked by the Minnesota Grey Ducks with the first pick of the second round (9th pick overall).  Franklin impressed the team from Chicago enough, with his 47 pancakes (2nd among all OL rookies) and one sack allowed.  Being selected with the 8th overall pick, Franklin moved up one spot from his previous draft position.

9th overall – Arizona Outlaws – S – Moe Skeeter

The Outlaws selected the 2nd safety of the draft with their 9th overall pick, Moe Skeeter played for the Portland Pythons in the DSFL, the team selected Skeeter in the 3rd round of the draft, the 5th pick of the round (21st overall). Skeeter had a very nice season with the Pythons, with 67 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 interceptions and 2 touchdowns, the most for any defender in the DSFL.  His solid play in the DSFL lead him to make the biggest jump so far in the draft order, moving up 12 spots from one draft to the other.

10th overall – Sarasota Sailfish – DE – Demon Jaxson

The Sarasota Sailfish selected defensive end, Demon Jaxson.  Jaxson was a late addition to the Portland Pythons squad, joining the team after the DSFL draft.  Even though Demon was undrafted in the DSFL (from what I can see), he impressed Sarasota enough to get selected in the top ten. With 24 tackles, 9 for a loss and 3 sacks.

11th overall – Berlin Fire Salamanders – S – Derek Wildstar

With their second pick of the first round, the second year team selected safety, Derek Wildstar, from the Kansas City Coyotes.  Wildstar was the 3rd overall pick in the DSFL draft, and had a decent season for the Coyotes, recording 62 tackles, one for a loss, one sack and one pass deflected.  Having gone 3rd overall in the DSFL draft, Derek Wildstar drops down 8 spots to be picked 11th overall in the ISFL draft.

12th overall – Yellowknife Wraiths – LB – Leonard Taylor

With the third linebacker selected in the 1st round, the Yellowknife Wraiths selected Leonard Taylor with the 12th overall draft pick.  In the DSFL draft, Taylor was selected by the Bondi Beach Buccaneers (formally known as the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers) at 5th overall.  Taylor had a very solid rookie season with the Buccaneers, finishing 2nd for all rookie defenders with 108 tackles, he also had one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to go along with an interception and 2 passes deflected. Taylor slipped 7 spots from the DSFL draft to the ISFL draft.

13th overall – Colorado Yeti – DT – Redbeard McFredbeard

The Yeti owned lucky number 13 in this season ISFL draft, and with it, they selected one of the best named players in the league, Redbeard McFredbeard.  Redbeard was selected in the DSFL draft at #19, which was the 3rd pick of the 3rd round, by the Kansas City Coyotes.  McFredbeard recorded 37 tackles, 1 for a loss and one sack on the season.  From draft to draft, Redbeard McFredbeard moved up 6 spots.

14th overall – San Jose Sabercats – WR – Tugg Speedman

With the final pick of the first round, the back to back Ultimus champions selected wide receiver Tugg Speedman.  Speedman was drafted in the DSFL by the London Royals at #16, the 8th and final pick of the 2nd round.  Tugg played some great football for London, en route to their second straight Ulitimini appearance, catching 73 passes for 841 yards and 4 touchdowns.  With being selected at #14, Tugg Speedman moved up two spots in the draft order.

So there are your S26 ISFL first round picks and where they were drafted in the DSFL.  Our biggest mover this season, not including undrafted Demon Jaxson, was Moe Skeeter, who moved up 12 spots from the DSFL draft to the ISFL draft.  And just in case you were wondering, this DSFL draft saw the following positional breakdown for their first 14 picks:

DSFL – S25 draft
QB – 2
RB – 0
WR – 1
TE - 0
OL – 2
CB – 2
S – 2
LB – 4
DE – 1
DT - 0

And for the first round of the ISFL draft:

ISFL – S26 draft
QB – 1
RB – 1
WR – 2
TE – 0
OL - 1
CB – 0
S – 3
LB – 3
DE – 2
DT - 1

Thanks for reading, and good luck to any of my fellow draftees who are making the immediate move up to the big leagues!  And for you that will be spending another season in the DSFL, watch out for Vincent Jones Jr, he’s ready to help defend Tijuana’s Ultimini title!
