DSFL Air Quality Report (DSFL Week 3)

Hey guys! Back again as promised for a super analysis of the DSFL passing game early on this season with some more advanced stats than in the historical season 1 analysis! This one looks to be shorter as I won't be completely explaining everything here again and instead that can be seen HERE in my previous iteration, which was a detailed passing analysis of season 1 of the ISFL and also used the new AW rating to determine who should be the QB of the year! We now shift to the DSFL here as my new QB, Joliet Christ Jr. is quarterbacking in the league, specifically for the current 3-0 Dallas Birddogs and now I can use this to compare my own player with other DSFL QBs and doing it live, I can look more in depth at some additional stats that are used to determine the quality of a quarterback. I will explain a few of the differences as well and keep looking to expand things as well as we go but we do have some additional stats to discover here that are more easily accessible when looking on a game by game basis, most importantly, some of the sack statistics and such.

Stats we added:

First, let's talk about the different statistics that we are adding compared to last time because we have a few that we are looking at now in terms of overall QB efficiency and effectiveness statistics!

Sacks Taken, Sack Yards Lost, Sack%:

This is our first new stat that is easiest to get from individual games and to add in smaller amounts over time and to my knowledge, not all of these are available in the game. Sacks taken and sack percentage might be but I don't think all three are easily available so we will do these here. Sacks Taken and Sack Yards Lost are pretty easy to know what exactly they are as they are the amount of times a QB was sacked and the total of how many yards are lost as a result of those sacks. Now, all of these sacks are not on the QB and we don't have a big way to know this but at a future date, we may look at the ones that are tied to OL/RB sacks allowed stats to see how many sacks may be caused by QBs holding on too long, but at the same time, maybe it is because receivers don't get open, there are factors we just can't ever know 100%. Sack Percentage however is a more telling of a stat and it is the amount of sacks a quarterback has taken divided by the total of pass attempts plus the number of sacks allowed. Sacks Allowed/(Pass Attempts + Sacks Allowed).

Drops/Throwaways/Spikes/Adjusted Completion Percentage:

This is another one that interested me when talking about quarterbacks as well and that is the stats leading to and the overall adjusted completion percentage as a result of those things. Not every one of a quarterback's incompletions are a result of a bad throw or decision at the hands of the QB and sometimes, some of the incompletions are good ones such as the throwaways to get out of a potential sack or even spikes to kill the clock at the end of a close game. There are also drops which are usually out of the QB's hands though a wobbly ball could affect this in some way but not much we have to see the quality of passes. The adjusted completion percentage takes out the drops, throwaways and spikes that would lead to a QB's regular completion percentage from being a true barometer of his skill and uses only the attempts in which a QB was just inaccurate or accurate on his throws. Did he get the ball to the pass catcher when he tried to, essentially. We compute this by taking completions and dividing it by pass attempts - (drops + throwaways + spikes).

Net Yards per Attempt (NY/A) and Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt (ANY/A):

Personally, this is likely the most important additions here as these have shown in the past, based on some research I have done online, to have a good correlation between good QBs and bad QBs or at least in terms of wins. The QBs with the better ANY/A usually win more games. So first, the NY/A which is not as important but it leads back to why we added sack data as this is pretty much the yards gained from a pass and lost from a sack divided by pass attempts and sacks. (Pass Yards - Sack Yards Lost)/(Pass Attempts + Sacks Taken). Adjusted Net Yards takes this a bit further and adds some extra factors and numbers like touchdowns and interceptions on to the NY/A. This accounts for extra touchdown yards as well as interception return yards as well essentially and adds it all into a bigger formula. (Pass Yards - Sack Yardages Lost + 20 * Touchdowns - 45 * Interceptions)/(Pass Attempts + Sacks Taken).

DSFL Passing Numbers Through Week 3:

First we will look at overall league passing numbers and averages so far through 3 weeks to set our baselines! These are per team numbers rather than per QB numbers as there is one team, London, who has used 2 but one QB has attempted just 8 passes.

Completions Per Team: 40.25
Attempts Per Team: 76.25
Completion Percentage: 52.79%
Passing Yards Per Team: 423
Touchdowns Per Team: 2.125

Yards Per Attempt: 5.55
Yards Per Completion: 10.51

Sack Percentage: 7.85%
Sack Yards Lost Per Team: 47.38

Now that we have our baseline, let's look at our overall rankings and quarterbacks who are above and below average in each category to set up for our ratings! The AW Rating:
Again explained:
Using the top half of the league (Top 3 for Season 1), assign points based off league leaders in certain statistical areas. The points will be weighted per statistic as follows:
Passer rating:
1st Place: 10 points
2nd Place: 8 points
3rd Place: 5 points
Yards Per Attempt:
1st Place: 8 points
2nd Place: 6 points
3rd Place: 4 points
Completion Percentage:

2nd Place: 5 points
3rd Place: 3 points
Touchdown Rate:
1st Place: 5 points
2nd Place: 3 points

2nd Place: 3 points
3rd Place: 2 points
Passing Yards:
1st Place: 2 points
2nd Place: 1 point
3rd Place: 1 point
We will also take away one point from any statistic that does not meet the league average for that season with the exception of passing yards as a few multi-QB teams early on can skew these numbers of league wide passing yard averages per team.
