RUNNING BACK

What’s new for Running Backs in DDSPF21?

TO KILL A BLOCKING BIRD BACK!!
One of the single biggest changes coming to Running Backs in Season 27 is the elimination of the Block Back archetype. The fact of the matter is that while the idea behind the Blocking Back makes sense, it just was not a heavily utilized player type. Don’t worry though, because it has been replaced with something that we think will be a little more enjoyable for everyone!

BIG BOYS GO ZOOM??!!
In DDSPF16 Running Backs that met certain combinations of Weight, Strength, and Speed received a boost to their running speed that greatly impacted how users built them. That quirk still exists in DDSP21, but we have removed the ability to meet the requirements. Don’t worry though, we have found ways to compensate the big boys so they don’t feel cheated.

POSITIONAL ELIGIBILITY!!
This was hinted at in our Tight End info drop, and it continues for Running Backs – no longer will you need to be designated as a Fullback in the sim in order to play in an outside WR spot. Do you happen to have a really good Receiving Back and not a lot of great Wide Receivers? Now you can feel free to throw your Running Back out wide and hope he’ll boost your receiving corps!

THERE CAN BE MORE THAN ONE!!
If you’ve been paying attention to these info blasts then you’ve most likely caught one recurring theme – we have been busting our butts to make sure there is no “best” archetype. Once again we feel this is the case for Running Backs. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, and each one is capable of being the best. It all will come down to your General Managers putting you in the best place to succeed!

What’s going on with my archetype?
If there is one glaring issue brought on from the limitations of DDSFP16, it’s that players really don’t feel any different. Thanks to the improved sim logic and the new Trait system, we have been able to create diverse Running Backs that fill different roles better than before. To that end, we have collapsed some old Running Back archetypes, and are introducing three for players to choose from. Each of these performs differently than others, so there will be some interesting choices for teams to make when it comes to creating their strategies and building their teams!

SPEED BACK
Ah, the old reliable, the Speed Back. Anyone who’s been around the league for more than a season knows the prevalence of the Speed Back archetype. In DDSPF16 speed is king, so it’s pretty obvious that the archetype with the highest speed cap is the best. Moving forward into Season 27 and beyond, the Speed Back returns as the archetype with the highest straight-line speed, but we’ve worked to make them much more singularly focused and more of a boom or bust type. If you get your hands on them you should have a good chance bringing them down; but, if a Speed Back gets to the corner you might be in trouble.

POWER BACK
Sometimes seen as the “other” Running Back, the Power Back has been overshadowed by the Speed Back for a long time in the ISFL. Heading into Season 27 those of you that love watching large men run over slight less large men can rejoice! We’ve been able to tweak Power Backs to not only fill a certain role but to also be scheme-diverse. They might not have the top end speed of the Speed Back, but they have a better chance of breaking out of tackles from pesky defenders and power through for extra yards.

RECEIVING BACK
Well, we’re three for three so far on bringing back existing archetypes for Running Backs. As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Receiving Backs don’t have the top end speed of the Speed Back, nor the size of the Power Back, but what they bring to table is an unmatched shiftiness and a strong pass catching ability. These types of players are just as comfortable lining up in the slot and running a slant route as they are lining up in the backfield and taking a handoff.

FULLBACK
As mentioned earlier, we have decided to collapse the Blocking Back archetype and have replaced it with this, the Fullback! The Fullback is a bit of a dying profession in the NFL, but these big fellas used to be a vital part of every offense. Players who pick Fullbacks will be able to specialize through their builds to become either a strong blocker for their backfield mates, a reliable receiving option coming out of the backfield, or even a dependable short yardage runner. Another very important note is that players using the Fullback Archetype are the ONLY players that will be allowed to be designated as a Fullback in the sim.

What are these Traits I keep hearing about?
New to DDSPF21 is the idea of Traits. As your player progresses and increases in ability, you will eventually unlock the opportunity to apply Traits to them. These will have real impacts on how your player performs. For Running Backs the available traits are:

SCAT BACK
The Encyclopedia Britannica defines Scat as a, “vocal style using emotive, onomatopoeic, and nonsense syllables instead of words in solo improvisations on a melody.” Player with the Scat Back trait bring that sort of style of movement to their running, meaning they become shiftier while running and better at evading tacklers. The trait also gives a slight speed boost when they have the ball in their hands.

RAW TALENT
Have you ever seen a player out there and think to yourself, “wow that person has so much raw talent!” That’s what this trait does! A player with the Raw Talent is simply faster with the ball in their hands. Okay, so I may have oversold it but it’s still a good trait!

ATHLETE
Makes your player more athletic, and for Running Backs it makes them faster when rushing but also gives them a slight speed boost after catching a pass.

ROLE MODEL
Role Model is the same for everyone – it makes your player less likely to commit penalties.

BLOCKING FB
This trait is exclusive to the Fullback Archetype and allows them to be a much stronger pass and run blocker. If your ideas of fun is being a Daryl Johnston type of player who runs over defenders to open up running lanes for their backfield mate, then this trait is for you!

TRAITS WE REMOVED
If you’ve been toying around in DDSPF21 then you probably have some familiarity with the Running Back traits, and you probably have noticed two that are absent from this list: Power Runner and All-Purpose Back. We have decided to make them unavailable for purchase because through extensive testing we determined that in some cases, they have no impact, and in worse cases cause players to perform worse. We didn’t want users to invest their time and valuable TPE in traits that did not make their players better, so we made the decision to remove them.

ONE ADDITIONAL NOTE OF IMPORTANCE!!
One thing we at Sim Transfer Central wanted to revisit was the TPE scale. One of our highest priorities has been to introduce more dilemmas into improving your player, and we felt that the TPE scale isn’t punishing enough at high levels (let’s face it, maximizing speed is a no brainer for most positions right now, especially if your max is 100 speed!).
As such, starting in Season 27, the TPE scale will work the same as it does currently for 1-95, but an extra tier has been introduced for 96-100 with each point costing 25 TPE to upgrade instead of the current 15. This means a Max 95 attribute cost is unchanged, but a max 100 attribute will cost 50 more TPE than it does currently. This has allowed us to buff up those non-100 Speed archetypes a little more.
Now, before you get up in arms and start chanting, “Heck HO” you should know that this change will only impact 34% of player archetypes. In addition, we have pruned a lot of TPE expenditures to make sure that your attribute and trait purchases are more impactful.

Have we already made it through the fifth day of the Eleven Days of Sim Migration? You users sure are spoiled! Make sure to check back tomorrow for more!
