*DSFL Primetime Week 1 Text Transcript: Kansas City Coyotes @ Portland Pythons - StadiumGambler - 01-29-2021

(Ridiculous overly produced and technical image of machinery colliding ensues, before an electrical storm explodes over metal to from the logo for DSFL Primetime, followed by the usual jaunty opening music.)

Beerman: WELCOME LADIES AND GENTLEMEN TO ANOTHER EPISODE OF DSFL PRIIIIIIIIME TIME. Week 1 of action kicking off in Season 27 for the final step before the big leagues, and we've got a lot to show you this week. I'm Chris Beerman, alongside me as always is the Hall Of Fame Linebacker, big Angus Winchester.

Winchester: Great to be here Chris....... we've sure got a good opening week of football to talk about.

Beerman: That we do Angus, that we do. First of all we go to Portland for our big matchup of the week. The Kansas City Coyotes coming into town to face the Portland Pythons in the Snake Pit. Last season the Pythons were 13-1 but fell short of the Ultimini in that brutal 20-17 loss to Bondi Beach. Meanwhile, last season Kansas City was 1-13, and used their high draft picks in a bid to retool and improve their record over that horror show from last season. This was a wild, wild game in the west coast. Who would come out on top? We would find out.

Beerman: As the Season 27 campaign kicks off for both teams, Portland regarded as heavy favourites to take that title that eluded them last year. Quarterback LeBron James the 3rd, looked great in camp, looks ready to take over that Sarasota starting job at some point. 4th round pick Troy Abed meanwhile, the rookie out of Greendale, won the starting job for the Coyotes and looked to make an impact in his pro debut, and on the first play its Abed...... hitting Ivo "Staying at the" Marriott for 13 yards for his first pro completion, but it was the ground game that took over early. Xander Creed....... pitchout to the right, 9 yard gain then, Busch Goose, long necks his way for 6 yards on 3rd and 1. Then its Abed........ hitting 1st overall selection Luke Quick for a QUICK 7 yard gain, then its Abed...... to Eleven Kendrick-Watts for 11 Kendrick-Yards and a first down, plus a penalty tacked on for a horse collar tackle Angus!

Winchester: Yeah watch Evan Jones the safety here, comes in and just horse collars Kendrick-Watts down while Kevin Morrison is making a tackle, 10 yard penalty, and it could've been worse, just a dirty, inexcusable play. I have no issue with hard-nosed football but you gotta keep it clean, and penalties hurt Portland a bit throughout this game.

Beerman: They had 9 of them for 50 yards, and that penalty set up Abed, to hit Kendrick-Watts again........ WHOPPPPPP! Gives two defenders the juke move and hes in for the touchdown! 9 yard job and the Coyotes are out in front seven-zip!

Beerman: But back comes Portland quickly...... Giovanni Bianchi........ conducts a 15 yard symphony offtackle to get Portland down near midfield then, Remus Roman, the converted safety goes WHOPPP! WHOPPP! Oh my goodness can this guy move! AND HE COULD........ GO........ ALL........ THE........ WAY........ 55 yards! Touchdown Pythons! We are tied 7-7!

Winchester: Yeah and just some terrible tackling form and defense there, Blake Bosworth on the edge has a shot at him and misses, then Butteron Thebread gets juked out of his cleats, then Siege Cameron the cornerback can't run him down. Taking nothing away from Roman though, good run and a good dunk on the goalposts there to celebrate his first ever touchdown at this level.

Beerman: Roman happy with his effort there as we go to the second quarter. Miserable punt by Cade York and a good battle for field position gave Kansas City the ball at the 36 to start the drive! Xander "Assassins" Creed...... 7 yards, first down, then Creed....... 7 yards and another first down to the 11 yard line, Then...... Ain't my faulllllt that I'm out here breaking loose~...... YOU GOTTA BLAME IT ON THE GOOSE! Busch Goose gets HIS first touchdown in the pros, and its 14-7 Kansas City!

Winchester: Yeah and give credit to the Kansas City offensive line for the success they had running the ball in that first half, especially outside, those tackles Bjorn Borg and Cheese Farley were really moving men backwards off the snap. You expect better from that Pythons defensive front, they invested resources in it converting rookies Xavier Walls and Gritt Gurdur over to the edge, and they got pushed around a bit in this game.

Beerman: But the Pythons have a deadly running game of their own, and it took them one play to show it! Giovanni Bianchi..... DUN DADADA DUNNN DUN...DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN, harmonizes his way his way up the middle and HE COULD! GO! ALL! THE! WAY! 80 YARD RUN! TOUCHDOWN PYTHONS!

Winchester: Yeah Kansas City once again with that porous defense that gave them so many problems last year, but they got some vicious downfield blocking from Phillip Weaver and Alexander Frogman on that one, just bowling over their men and giving Bianchi a chance to show that speed of his. Python running game got some big plays, even if they didn't get a ton of carries Chris.

Beerman: Meanwhile the Kansas City running game goes marching themselves, not for big plays, but enough to keep the chains moving. Creed, offtackle again, 11 yards, then Busch Goose....... to the outside, then back up the middle for 18 yards and a first, then Goose......eegh, eeeeeeeeegh, boom, beaks his way into the endzone for a 2 yard touchdown, 21-14. Meanwhile Portland, even though they broke off a couple big runs, they didn't go to the run enough, and James was throwing terribly in the first half, overshoots McGrady there...... then rookie Alexander Vasiliev with the drop... offense struggling to move BUT Pythons get the ball to start the 3rd quarter and its James...... looking for Shane Benjamin over the middle but its picked off by Kaworu Nagisa! 20 yard return down to the Portland 29 Angus!

Winchester: Nagisa not playing too deep in the safety role and just rushes up in a short zone, like he knew exactly where the ball was going from the start. Benjamin ran the slant route correctly, I can blame James a bit on this one for the throwing decision, but it's gotta be down to the playcalling here. Portland REALLY needed to use those big runs to open up the deep passing game more, and take shots downfield on that KC defense.

Beerman: KC with a big opportunity to extend the lead, but they have their backs against the wall on 3rd and 10 before Abed hits Eleven Kendrick-Watts for....eeeeeeeiya no, not quite eleven yards but still a first down, and then Abed...... hits a WIDE OPEN Luke Quick on the out route, Coyotes now up by two scores!

Winchester: Complete blown coverage in the redzone there, 3rd and goal from the 2, everyone's gotta be pressing up against the line, don't give them room underneath, force them to kick the field goal, no idea why Kita Chiasa the cornerback there was closer to the back of the endzone instead of just watching Quick and jamming him hard at the line. Quick's a great young talent and a good first overall to help build the passing game, but he better not count on any more easy touchdowns like that, cause that was a gimme.

Beerman: So KC up two scores with the Portland passing attack malfunctioning, and they're on the road to success, but here was a big play that started to turn things around a bit for Portland.... 4th and 2, just past midfield with 6 minutes left to go in the 3rd, Kansas City goes for it and Creed.......euuuuuugh, can't quite get there, turnover on downs!

Winchester: Yeah there certainly is an argument to be made out there by analytical-heads about how you should be more aggressive and go for it on 4th and short more often in certain situations, instead of just a shallow punt......... I liked this call here with the KC offensive line doing a good job paving the way for the run to this point, but right around here is when Portland started clamping down on the run a bit, they stack up well on the line and force the turnover on downs, and this was huge for Portland.

Beerman: Then finally the passing game starting to click a little for Portland after a slow start in the first half..... James..... hits Alexander Vasiliev, the rookie slot receiver from Mother Russia for 14 yards, then James has one of his favourite targets Quavious McGrady WIDE OPEN! Touchdown Pythons! 28-21!

Winchester: McGrady here got open by giving Siege Cameron the cornerback here a head fake, and Cameron gets all kinds of twisted there, falls down, and McGrady is wide open for six points. This was one of the first good touch passes I saw from James all day, and it was a sign of a turnaround.

Beerman: Then Portland gets the ball back after a three and out by KC but they're backed up....... James, looks for a receiver....... can't find one..... AND ITS THE PROFESSOR GODFREY GRAVITY! Applying several hundred Newtons of force there to get the sack! 30-21 Kansas City, and KC would extend it to 33-21 after a field goal by Armando Galarraga....... Sno now with 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter, this was where the game REALLY started to swing in Portland's favour as James.....drops back, and finds Saleem Spence, the rookie out of Canada, with his first catch in the DSFL for 8 yards, and there was more to come from him. 3rd and 9! James....... hits Spence on the hitch route, and he shakes his man off! He's got size, but hes got the speed too! AND HE COULD........ GO........ ALL........ THE........ WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYNO NOT QUITE, AS KAWORU NAGISA CHASES HIM DOWN AT THE 1 YARD LINE!

Winchester: And a good little bit of receiving play here, Spence catches the short pass, Logan Steele the cornerback drapes onto him, Spence just shakes him off with a twist and charges upfield, good hustle from the safety Kaworu Nagisa to save the touchdown, but Spence looked like a beast on this play, just taking a nothing short pass and breaking the game wide open.

Beerman: Then, Remus Roman charges in, 1 yard run, his second touchdown of the game, and it's 33-28 Coyotes! And the Pythons would get another big play! Abed...... throws a pump pass short over the middle and its picked off by Evan Jones the safety! Touchdown Portland!

Winchester: Yeah just a simple short pass to the tight end, Evan Jones just dissects it and charges up the middle of the field, and Abed barely completes his throwing motion before Jones is just charging past him on the pick six. Tremendous situational awareness there, just like that Nagisa pick the Coyotes got earlier in the game. Bad, bad time for Abed first real bad mistake of the game, often every rookie quarterback has one or two, and you can shake them off depending on when they happen, but this was a bad time for it.

Beerman: Portland goes for two so that KC only ties with a field goal, but Bianchi gets stopped short and its a slim lead, 34-33 for the Pythons. KC trying to get something going, QUICK bubble screen to Luke Quick, but Kita Chiasa breaks it up and KC has to punt. Then its James dropping back to pass........ oh my goodness its the rookie Saleem Spence again! AND HE COULD........ GO........ ALL........ THE........ WAY....... TOUCHDOWN PORTLAND! 41-33!

Winchester: Spence once again showing his power, just swatting Steele aside when Steele tries to jam him, breaks up the middle, and the safety help is completely sucked in towards the left side where McGrady and Vasiliev are, no one's there to keep up with Spence, and he houses it and puts the game out of reach for KC.

Beerman: KC desperately trying to get something going late, heres Abed to Kendrick-Watts on 4th down, but he drops the short pass, would've been short of the first down anyways, and Portland adds a field goal to win 44-33 in a wild one. Portland made the comeback courtesy of a 23 spot in the 4th quarter, James went just 11 for 27, but had 234 yards passing thanks to all those yards after the catch. Saleem Spence, the kid from the University of Manitoba, hailed as a questionable pick who didn't belong, showed he could belong with 3 receptions for 135 yards. Bianchi and Roman combining for over 150 yards in 15 carries. Troy Abed didn't have a bad debut, 19 for 34, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, but only 141 yards, Honolulu's first overall pick Eleven Kendrick-Watts had 7 catches for 76 yards. Xander "Apollo" Creed had 29 carries for 116 yards, and Busch Goose went 14 for 54 and 2 touchdowns. KC showed a lotta fight, but it wasn't enough, and Angus, wow, was that 4th quarter a difference maker for these two teams.

Winchester: Yeah it was an interesting game, you look at time of possession and KC had the ball for nearly 40 minutes, they controlled the clock, they honestly should've had this game after the first three quarters with how the team was playing, but the Pythons defense sorta woke up and stuffed them, and some of that inexperience on KC showed. They went 4 and out with 4 incompletions on the final drive, they had 5 rushing attempts for 7 yards in the 4th quarter, thats when you need your running game to take over and finish off a tiring defense, but Portland played BETTER despite being on the field more, and they had those two firemen in Evan Jones and Saleem Spence running in to save the day in the 4th quarter while KC had no one making plays for them in the 4th. I gotta say, I was impressed with Saleem Spence in the 4th quarter, he showed some power and some skill and even some speed, hes a big kid, 6'5, 230, real matchup problem evne for some linebackers, almsot a tight end playing wideout in a way, and when James started looking his way things clicked some more. Spence got criticized for being picked, some people felt he didn't belong in the league because he had some issues with his college ocach, well his college team fell apart after he left, due to issues with the playcalling, and then you had people ragging on him for coming from a Canadian college to start with. But he showed he could play, and he really helped Portland bigtime in pulling out the win.

Beerman: Not to mention Angus, you had that key interception off the short pass that Evan Jones returned for a touchdown, that gave them the lead when they really needed it to prevent KC from getting hold of things again.

Winchester: Yeah and really the defense and the defensive coordinator deserve some credit for turning things around in the 4th. Jones had a couple bonehead plays early in the game, but came through when it mattered, that defensive scheme Portland had struggled badly to contain the outside zone runs, but they came through when it mattered. I will say though, this was 44-33 but did not feel like a two score win in the slightest for Portland, and this is concerning for a team said to be a favourite to win the Ultimini, to win by 11 points over a team picked to possibly finish last again. And its worrying for Kansas City, because their defense tries hard, but has a lot of backups and role players and rookies...... they need the offense to be everything it can be for the team to win. They've got double first overall picks in Kendrick-Watts and Luke Quick, they've got a good running back duo, they've got a developing rookie quarterback Troy Abed, they need the offense to step up, and it disappeared in the 4th quarter. I think the coaches for both teams have a lot of questions that they need answered about their teams going into week 2.

Beerman: So with the win, Portland moves to 1-0 and they've got a road trip to Bondi Beach coming up in an Ultimini rematch, while Kansas City heads back home to face the Minnesota Grey Ducks, both games live on the ISFL Network at 9 Eastern, 8 o'clock Central, be sure to subscribe for notifications on gameday..... COMING UP NEXT! Would the Tijuana Luchadores come off the top rope against Dallas, or would they crash and burn? Would Bondi Beach's duck hunt be successful in their first step towards a repeat Ultimini? And would the London Royals royally crown the Norfolk Seawolves? FIND OUT NEXT ON DSFL PRIIIIIIIIIIME TIME!!!!!!

(OOC: fuck no actually I ain't doing all four games lmao)
