*A Completely Subjective Ranking of DSFL Teams by BOT Names (S27) - Mojojojo - 02-06-2021

Being a brand new member of a DSFL war room this season, I am learning to appreciate some of the behind-the-scenes creativity that goes into team management. After the DSFL draft, an important activity is figuring out how to fill in roster holes with bots, which the teams (usually GMs and war rooms) get to name. Each season there are some really fun bot names and I hope through this article, they can get a little bit more appreciation and exposure from the average user! This is meant to be fun, so please don’t take these opinions personally!

This is a couple collaboration. Please give 40% payout to "@slate" for collecting all of the bot names from the forum, for advising on rankings, and for helping with write-up!

Introduction
There are three types of bots in the DSFL:
  1. GM bots that can be any position, begin with 50 TPE that can be spent at the team’s discretion, and gain 10 TPE per league week;
  2. OL bots, which get 50 TPE that can be spent at the team’s discretion (no pre-specified build);
  3. Filler bots, which can be chosen from a set of pre-specified 50 TPE builds at different positions
For this article, we collected all bot names listed in each DSFL team’s roster subforum (usually pinned at the top of the forum for each season). The GM bots each have their own separate thread, with another thread or two for all of the OL and filler bots used for each team. Any bots that were purchased but aren’t being used in team depth charts as of week 4 weren’t included in this listing. So we are only ranking teams on the names of the bots that they are actually using! No extra credit for good names that never appear on the field.

While different teams have different approaches for naming their bots, there are a few common techniques used. Many bots are named after former players or users of the team. This can be done through:
  • Swapping first and last initials (spoonerism), i.e. "Let Charson" from Chet Larson (BBB)
  • Combining two player names, either the same user's multiple players like "Michelle Franchet" (Frank Michel and Mike Franchet of DeadlyPlayer; LON) or two different users' players like “Wasrabi Chainbreaker” and “Alejandro Gleel” (combining Wasrabi Gleel and Alejandro Chainbreaker, MIN)
  • Modifying a player name to make sense for a robot, i.e. “Maverick BOTie” from Maverick Bowie (TIJ)
  • Making a player name silly, i.e. "Suleiman Bamza" (NOR) from Suleiman Ramza
Others teams name their bots after NFL players, celebrities, or characters from movies or books (often using some of the same fun techniques described above for player names).

Team Rankings
And without further ado: the ranking of the DSFL teams by bot names! We will list the teams in order, list all of their bot names, and provide a brief description of what we like / dislike about their bot naming. We try our best to explain the backstory behind the bot names that we recognize, but some of these are such “inside” jokes we hope that GMs or other players will post here and let us know the thinking behind the names!

#1. Kansas City Coyotes KCC
GM:
Butteron Thebread - LB
Taco Bell - DE

OL:
Tua Isabust
Melly Eatscrayons
Brando Isabelter

Filler:
Blims Gank - FB
Wannabe Happy - DT
Numb Berrs - LB
Rean Schwarzer - LB
Kaworu Nagisa - S
Hen Tai - CB

GM’s @frazzle14 and @WhatAmUs clearly had a lot of fun with naming their team bots. They had a lot of bots to name, but they have provided us with a lot of variety in naming styles to appreciate here as well as some great individual names.

Their GM bots appear to be nods to former GM Buttersqauch who has worked at Taco Bell. But, we have learned that Butteron Thebread is actually a nod to Starboy (who also loves Taco Bell) who had a brain fart during draft stream and instead of saying a player would "sweeten the deal" said they were "butter on the bread" (whoops). We like the GM bot - former GM symmetry here. The OL bots are very clearly the work of Frazzle, who’s friend (user: Lewis Mellville, a.k.a. Melly; player: Jeeeeroy Lenkins) is apparently a rather obnoxiously vocal Dolphins fan. So with his naming of the OL bots Frazzle has embraced his inner troll with “Tua Isabust” and “Melly Eatscrayons.” Among the filler bots we see “Numb Berrs” named for the beloved founder of the Coyotes (user: 124715 a.k.a. Numbers; player: Eleven Kendrick-Watts) and “Blims Gank” named for GlimsTC (and his Bank?; player: Felix Archstone) another former GM of the team and all around great guy. This just in: their team stadium is Glims Bank, so yeah. Leaning into the Coyote’s reputation as the purple weeb dogs, we also see an appearance of “Kaworu Nagisa” (a character from the anime Evangelion) and “Hen Tai” (haha). “Wannabe Happy” is just cute and makes us smile.

A few we don’t get: Brando Isabelter and Rean Schwarzer.

Best Name: Hen Tai (very tongue-in-cheek)
Worst Name: Rean Schwarzer (?)

#2. London Royals LON
GM:
Michelle Franchet - TE
Juandrew Domison - LB

OL:
Banana Gato - OL
Catano Plat - OL
Mister Fridge - OL
Herr Bananenkatze - OL
Wing Wang - OL

Filler:
Tugg Speedboat - WR

Now you may call “bias” here and you may not be wrong, but we rank the London Royals bot names at number 2 this season (GMs @slate and @katarn22). Some might say there isn’t much diversity since all of the bots are named after former players/users; however, there is a lot of fun theming and variation to how this has been done. The GM bots are named after former team GMs who also had players on the Royals. First is the TE bot is named for DeadlyPlayer, one of the team’s founders. “Michelle Franchet” combines the name of his current player Frank Michell, which is often mispronounced as Michelle, and former player Mike Franchet (the reason behind Deadly’s alternate Discord moniker: “Franchy”). Second is the LB bot named for the two most recent and still beloved GMs of the Royals franchise: ABH89 and Maglubiyet. Taking parts of the first and last names from their two defensive players, Harrison Andrews and Juan Domine, gives rise to “Juandrew Domison.” For our single filler bot, “Tugg Speedboat” is a reference to Tugg Speedman, a recently called up WR from the team, whose last name was misspelled as Speedboat in many a S26 Mock Draft.

For the OL bots, all 5 are a callback to London icon platanocat and his player Marlon Alexander, one of the best OL that the Royals have ever had. “Banana Gato” and “Catano Plat” play with his name by swapping either the letters or the languages of his username. “Mister Fridge” is a reference to his render, a fearsome animate refrigerator. “Herr Bananenkatze” is what Google Translate turned up for “Mr. Banana-Cat” in German to get even more foreign language representation on the OL. And rounding out the OL is “Wing Wang”, which is a reference to plat’s playful term of endearment for anyone in the Royals LR when he wakes up and signs onto Discord each morning.

Best Name: Juandrew Domison (GM love)
Worst Name: Mister Fridge (but really they’re all great)

#3. Dallas Birddogs DAL
GM:
Ango Gobloggian - RB
Bork Rowlf - OL

OL:
Yeet Yoot - OL
Trogdor Gumbawumba - OL
Cee Shanty - OL

The Dallas Birddogs with GMs @Kyamprac and @r0tzbua take the number 3 spot. Dallas doesn’t have that many bots this year, but every single one of them has a quality name and just seems to reflect the fun-loving culture of the team. “Ango Gobloggian” is a reference to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and also works as an amusing set of sounds if you don’t get the reference. “Bork Rowlf'' plays into the Birddogs name with some classic and amusingly spelled dog noises. The creative onomatopoeic names continue to the OL bots with “Yeet Yoot'' which maybe loses a tiny number of points because yeeting doesn’t match with OL as much as one might hope. “Trogdor Gumbawumba” is another fantastic nonsensical name, with Trogdor being an obvious reference to the wonderful mid 2000s online shorts on HomeStarRunner.com (no idea why it’s here on an OL bot but it’s great), and Gumbawumba being another silly sound (maybe an offbeat reference to the band Chumbawamba?). And Cee Shanty rounds out the bunch with a clever joke that abbreviates well in the sim to C. Shanty.

All in all, what Dallas’s bots lack in quantity they make up for in quality of name. None of these names are references to any particular players, and only Bork really has anything to do with the Birddogs at all. The rest are just pure creative silliness, and we’re here for it.

Best Name: Trogdor Gumbawumba (lol)
Worst Name: Ango Gobloggian

#4. Bondi Beach Buccaneers BBB
GM:
Dacey Kream - CB
Let Charson - LB

OL:
Steve Irwin - OL
Sheep Cannon - OL
El Heffie - OL
R. I.P.DaxFrost - OL
Gonewild Johnson - OL

Filler:
Nicholas TheBad - DE
Crocodile Dundee - LB
U berSux - LB
Eep Eben - TE
Beo Loomfield - K/P
f r - FB

So there’s a bit of a drop here between the first three teams and these next two. But coming in fourth we have the Bondi Beach Buccaneers with their GMs @NicholasTheGreat and @Thor. So starting out with our likes, “Sheep Cannon” is just random and hilarious. Great name! We also enjoy the pairing of “Steve Irwin” and “Crocodile Dundee” with some fun Aussie vibes. “R. I.P.DaxFrost” as a nod to Frost having to change his player name from Dax Frost to Raphtalia Chan is clever but why the heck is the first name not “RIP” and the last name “DaxFrost”? It’s just weird how it is now even if this is what you have to do to make the joke work in the sim. Now on to our dislikes… the basic spoonerisms (like “Let Charson”, “Kacey Dream”, and “Beo Loomfield”) don’t do much for us but it’s always nice to see the nod to former team players. While “Nicholas TheBad” is a nice bit of self-deprecating humor from GM NicholasTheGreat, we’re not a huge fan of the negativity between that one and “U berSux”. And they just got super lazy with “f r”

Names we don’t fully understand are “Gonewild Johnson” and “El Heffie.” We’re guessing “Eep Ebens” is a play on Heath Evans.

Best Name: Sheep Cannon
Worst Name: f r (come on, guys)

#5. Norfolk Seawolves NOR
GM:
Paulie Walnuts - LB
Widden Pallets - CB

OL:
Ananda Rodgers - OL
Flash Delacour - OL
Second Ofyourlove - OL

Filler:
Magnus Ironside - DT
Dorfus Cross - DE
Suleiman Bamza - LB
Dogwood Jaxon-Waxon - CB

At number 5 we have the Norfolk Seawolves with GMs @Jimi64 and @ConnorM123. Norfolk has some very wholesome names based on combinations of previous players among their OL and filler bots. We like that they spread the like around many former teammates, even if they aren’t always the most inspired. A few are funny like “Suleiman Bamza” and “Dorfus Cross,” but there are also a few (especially the OL bots) that used players from completely different positions which disgruntled Slate in particular. Now we are assuming that the GM bots “Paulie Walnuts” and “Widden Pallets” are inside jokes we are not privy to… but having these other naming styles along with “Second Ofyourlove” adds texture to the list which we appreciate.

Best Name: Suleiman Bamza
Worst Name: Flash Delacour (why base an OL name on WRs?)

#6. Tijuana Luchadores TIJ
GM:
Maverick BOTie - LB
Adam MerBOT - DT

OL:
Fodo Baggins - OL
Samwise Gamgee - OL
Mariadoc Brandybuck - OL

Filler:
Bot Lorien - TE
Bot Bilbo - K/P

There’s another pretty large drop here to the last tier of teams. In 6th place we have the Tijuana Luchadores (GMs @Tonzy and @GuitarMaster116). So we have a clear Lord of the Rings theme here to the OL and filler bots, which is lovely. However, they definitely get docked points for not spelling “Frodo” correctly, which we can only assume is a lack of attention to detail rather than a purposeful play on the name given that the rest of the OL bots are exact to the characters. The sim team appears to have fixed it to “Frodo Baggins” in the sim, but the thread has a clear misspelling and we’re disappointed. We are also not keen on having the GM bots named after the players of the current GMs (Maverick Bowie for Tonzy and Adam Melott for GuitarMaster), when other teams usually use their player references to call back to other former GMs or players. Also, shouldn't it be "MelBOT" not "MerBOT"?

Best Name: Bot Lorien
Worst Name: Fodo Baggins (smh)

#7. Portland Pythons POR
GM:
Alexander Frogman - OL
Chuck Hamel - OL

Filler:
Jacky Rockman - WR
Andrew Christiansen - RB
Marty Matthews - LB

At number 7 we have the Portland Pythons (GMs @RDBSouthPaw and @zeagle1). None of the Pythons’ bot names are bad, but none of them really stand out in a good way either with the small exception of “Alexander Frogman” (a play on new war room member Hordle’s Discord pfp being a frog). The rest are pretty simple tweaks on previous players for the team. “Chuck Hamel” is a combination of former Pythons OL Chuck Roth and Marc Hamel. “Jacky Rockman” is a simple swap of “Rocky Jackman,” a former Pythons WR. “Andrew Christiansen” is the Americanized version of recently called up RB Anders Christiansen, which doesn’t work that well because Anders Christiansen was itself a play on Hans Christian Andersen so now that joke is lost. And Marty Matthews is a play on Matty Martinsson, a former LB for Portland. Not much variety or creativity in these names, we’re afraid, but at least there weren’t too many of them to slog through.

Best Name: Alexander Frogman
Worst Name: Andrew Christiansen

#8. Minnesota Greyducks MIN
GM
Frostsux Le'Map - LB
Fat Boija - DT

OL:
Conner Craig - OL
Konner Crayg - OL
Cawnah Kraig - OL
Kayanher Crayagh - OL
K’Nor Krayg - OL

Filler:
Tyron Shields Jr. - CB
Wasrabi Chainbreaker - LB
Alejandro Gleel - LB

Last and definitely least we have the Minnesota Greyducks with GMs @TheCC and @RussDrivesTheBus. We will give it to Minnesota that their naming is at least very on brand with their team reputation. Their GM bots are just league memes with “Frostsux Le’Map” and “Fat Boija” (which appears to be a season-to-season mainstay). While we like that their OL bots are themed, we’re pretty sure these are themed around the real name of someone on the team and they just get more wacky with each iteration. So I guess it’s nice to e-meet you Connor Craig. Finally the filler bots are rather uninspired variants of previous player names, with the LB bots just switching the first and last names of Wasrabi Gleel and Alejandro Chainbreaker.

Best Name: Frostsux Le'Map (we appreciate the extra class from the apostrophe)
Worst Name: Kayanher Crayagh

You may think those are combined names of former players, but we actually literally combined those players. They’re disgusting mutants.

Also Paulie Walnuts is from the Sopranos.
No idea what Widden Pallets is. Probly some weird Scottish thing
