S28 Offseason Patch (Thread 1 of 2) - slate - 03-05-2021

Hi everyone! As previewed in the February 22 newsletter, we have a few balance changes to make to the sim. This coming Sunday, we'll be announcing tweaks to blitz ratio limits and position skill formulas as well as backend fixes to help the unpredictable RB performances and DSFL penalties that will take effect next season.

But today, we wanted to get the archetype changes announced to make sure you have as much time as possible to make any necessary adjustments to your builds. The player template pages for the affected positions have already been changed in accordance with these changes, and the Player Builder will be updated shortly to reflect them as well. So without further ado...

Power Back Archetype Update

What is the change?
The Power Back archetype will see adjustments to both the minimum and maximum values for the following attributes:

Endurance: MIN increased from 50 to 60. MAX increased from 90 to 95.
Intelligence: MAX decreased from 80 to 75.
Hands: MIN increased from 35 to 40.

Why?
The Endurance changes were made to allow high-end Power Backs to be more appropriate for a workhorse back role than the other archetypes. A Power Back with max Endurance will see their speed reduce by a smaller amount compared to other archetypes when reaching a large number of carries later in a game. The Intelligence and Hands adjustments were made to mitigate the increase in total TPE needed to cap. We believe that these changes, along with other backend changes to make the run game a more consistent offensive presence, will allow for Power Backs to have a larger competitive niche.

Action Needed
ALL POWER BACKS will need to have their latest update post adjusted to account for the changes. More details will be posted soon about what to do if your player's current archetype is affected and you do not wish to swap to a different archetype.

Power Backs may switch to another RB archetype for free this offseason.*

RBs of any other archetype (Speed Back, Receiving Back, Fullback) may switch to Power Back archetype for free this offseason.*

Safety Archetype Updates

What is the change?
The cost of Athlete trait for all 3 archetypes is reduced from 100 TPE to 50 TPE.
The sim rule around having a maximum of 2 FS on your roster will be removed.
Specific archetypes will also have weights as well as minimum and maximum attributes adjusted as follows:

Center Fielder
Must be designated in the sim as FS, cannot be designated as SS.
Weight: Reduced from 205 lbs to 195 lbs.
Speed: MIN increased from 55 to 65. MAX increased from 95 to 100.
Agility: MAX decreased from 90 to 85.

Ball Hawk
May be designated at either FS or SS in the sim.
Weight: Increased from 200 lbs to 210 lbs.
Speed: MIN increased from 55 to 60. MAX increased from 90 to 95.

Enforcer
Must be designated in the sim as SS, cannot be designated as FS.
Strength: MIN increased from 40 to 45. MAX increased from 75 to 80.
Tackling: MIN increased from 40 to 50. MAX increased from 80 to 85.

Why?
This change was made with three goals in mind: to boost the prominence of safeties in the sim, to make the archetypes more distinct, and to help reduce the prevalence of huge rushing and passing plays. The FS rule is being removed because while they still have an inherent advantage for interceptions, SS now have built-in advantages to tackling and defending run plays, so having many FS is not an automatic advantage like it was in the previous sim.

The Center Fielder changes should allow these players to keep up with faster receivers, limiting big pass plays and allowing them to intercept more passes. The weight and agility changes, as well as the forced FS designation, will ensure that they perform comparatively worse against the run than other safety archetypes to maintain competitive tradeoffs.

The Ball Hawk maintains its role as a flexible safety which can adapt to fit a variety of team needs, with its speed increased to give it a small boost in power level that all safeties needed. Meanwhile, the Enforcer changes ensure they are the best run stopping safety archetype as the other archetypes get faster to defend the pass better.

Action Needed
ALL SAFETIES will need to have their latest update post adjusted to account for the changes. More details will be posted soon about what to do if your player's current archetype is affected and you do not wish to swap to a different archetype.

All safeties may switch to a different Safety archetype for free this offseason.*

Free Archetype Swaps

* Free archetype switches do not require payment and will not count against or affect your career limit. You may also redistribute all TPE, not needing to adhere to the 50% of TPE rule. These free switches are only available for the first update of the S28 season. Once you have been updated on Saturday March 20th, the free switch will no longer be available. Position (not archetype) swaps to or from any of the affected archetypes will not have any special exceptions made.

ATTENTION SAFETIES AND POWER BACKS!

All players who were Power Backs or Safeties as of the last update should rebuild their players from scratch to fit in with the rebuilt archetypes.

Make sure to use the templates in the Create A Player section to get the up to date min/maxes! GMs may also rebuild their IA players who fit into this category.
