Defensive Line Standouts: Week 5

Welcome to week 5 of our weekly look at defensive line performances across the league. After some stunning performances throughout the first 4 weeks of the season, week 5 pales in comparison. Offensive lines around the league worked hard to earn their paychecks this week. While there were a few stand-out performances, it really was a “down week” as far as statistics go. For the first time this season, everyone on this list has appeared at least once. We see the return of many very familiar faces this week, and some we haven’t seen for quite a while. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!

Defensive End Top Performers

O. Von Gerhardt PHI ($$) 6 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK, 1 safety
Von Gerhardt is making his first appearance on this list since week 1, and boy did he earn it. He led all defensive linemen this week with 6 tackles, as well as adding a tackle for loss, 2 sacks, and a safety. Von Gerhardt’s performance is a big reason the Philadelphia Liberty were able to pull off their first victory of the season. Von Gerhardt will have a tough test next week facing off against two of the best offensive tackles in the league in Winchester and Clegane of the Otters.

L. Thor OCO ($$) 4 TCK, 3 SCK
Thor was a defensive standout in a game where the Orange County Otters combined for a total of 7 sacks. Thor himself recorded 3 sacks, while also adding 4 tackles. He was a large part of the Otters victory this weeks and sets himself up for another possible great game against the porous offensive line of the Philadelphia Liberty next week. The Liberty have allowed 22 sacks this season so far.

F. Wozy COL ($$$$) 3 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK, 1 FF
Wozy is making his fourth appearance on the list this week, tied for the most amongst defensive ends with Hendrix of Baltimore and Tuck of Arizona. His 3 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack were enough to make the list on their own, but Wozy also added a clutch forced fumble in the fourth quarter that all but ended a possible come back. Wozy will take his talents on the road next week for a crucial away game against NSFL front runners, the Arizona Outlaws.

Other Top Performers
J. Tuck ARI ($$$$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
O. Taylor BAL ($$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
K. Hendrix BAL ($$$$) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
Tuck and Hendrix are both making their fourth appearance on this list with Tuck just narrowly missing the top half. There has yet to be a D-line Standouts list without Hendrix or Tuck involved. Taylor is making his second of the season and, like Von Gerhardt, he had not been seen on this list since week 1. Hendrix and Taylor will be facing a team that has allowed the third most sacks (19) and has the lowest number of pancakes in the NSFL with only 71 (tied with the Philadelphia Liberty).

Defensive Tackle Top Performers

J. Reigns OCO ($$) 5 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
The lone defensive tackle featured on the list with a sack this week, Reigns had himself a phenomenal game. His 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss showed that he was a solid disruption in the middle of the line. Between the play of Reigns and Thor, the Otters held the Legion to only 36 yards on 15 carries, a depressingly low 2.4 yard per carry. The Otters take their show on the road next week to Philadelphia against a Liberty team coming off their first win of the season.

B. Bot COL ($$$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
Bot had himself another solid game with 4 tackles and a tackle for loss. Although his performance didn’t translate into a win for the Yetis, he has no reason to hang his head. Bot will take his team on the road to Arizona for an incredibly tough test against a 4-1 Outlaws team that has yet to lose at home.

M. Ramrio LVL ($ x5) 5 TCK
Ramrio continues his streak as the only member of the NSFL to appear on this list every week of the season. While this is his least statistically impressive game of the season, his 5 tackles are the second most of any defensive lineman this week. Ramrio and his fellow Legion travel to Baltimore next week to face an offensive line that is tied for the least amount of sacks allowed in the NSFL, with only 7.

Other Top Performers
B. Metas BAL ($$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL
B. Bjornsson YKW ($$$) 4 TCK
J. Boom BAL ($$$) 3 TCK
Although there were no truly great performances among this group, the fact that they made it on this list proves that they exceeded the performance of a majority of their peers. Bjornsson and Boom are both making their third showing on this list but, took two very different paths to get here. Bjornsson was a first round draft pick by the Wraiths, whereas Boom has shown to be a phenomenal free agent pick-up by the Hawks. Metas, although having a bit of a down year when compared to last year is still showing that he is one of the best defensive tackles in the NSFL.

Team Appearances After Week 5
Arizona: 11
Baltimore: 11
Las Vegas: 10
Colorado: 9
Orange County: 8
San Jose: 5
Philadelphia: 5
Yellow Knife: 5

Baltimore made this biggest jump this week with all 4 of their starting defensive linemen making the list. Although no one from the Hawks had a truly stellar performance (as none of them made the top half), they did just enough to make the list. In complete contrast, for the second week in a row San Jose is the only team without a player appearing on this list. While their offensive line is universally praised as one of the best in the league, their defensive counterparts have been struggling as of late. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and comments below!
