*Official Dice of the Chicago Butchers - IthicaHawk - 03-14-2021

Hey folks, Ithica Hawk here presenting the first of what I hope will be a few Limited Edition ISFL Team themed polyhedral dice sets.

Each set is hand made by me (Ithica Hawk). I decided to make Chicago Butchers dice first because that was the team that drafted me and where I spent most of my ISFL career. I think next up I will attempt Copperheads but the colours there might be more tricky so we'll see.

First off, the finished product:

I started inking some of the numbers in Silver (you can see the 11 on the D12) but the shade I have isn't bright enough so I stopped. Plus I need to put them through a vibratory tumbler (and mine is broken) to clean up the faces and make them glassy. I thought I'd try them raw (i.e. just out the molds like you see here without any finishing) in lieu of finishing them but I think they look a bit too rough. I _could_ sand each face individually by hand but that is 70 faces and needs about 5/6 grits and about 2-5 minutes per face so I decided heck no. Also the D6 somehow got a bit squished. I'm not exactly sure how but the mold must have been squeezed or compressed at some point by accident. Looks funky though.

To make these, first off I cast master molds using a platinum cure silicone rubber around 3D printed dice masters. The molds I made are two part molds (sometimes called cap molds. Here is what the mold looks like: https://i.imgur.com/sOLlNR9.mp4

I then mixed up about 50ml of epoxy resin in order to pour the dice. I currently don't have a pressure pot to cure my dice in (which eliminates bubbles) so I have to take great care to make sure I introduce as little air as possible into the resin as I mix/pour. I do this by first warming the resin so it flows better (helps the air bubbles reach the surface) and then mixing carefully and slowly while gently heating the resin with a heatgun. Too much heat will start the curing process early so it's a delicate balance. I split the resin into two silicone cups, make 2/3 red and 1/3 black. I then slowly poured 2/3 of each dice with the red and then 1/3 with the black.

This gives a cool effect that when you look side on, you can see the clear line between the colours but when you tilt them you get this dark dice with red reflections. They take about 18 hours to cure enough to be taken out of the dice and then another 24-72 hours to be fully cured to the point where they could go into a vibratory tumbler.

I hope you find this interesting. Feel free to ask questions about the process and suggest what teams I should do next. Also, message to media graders, you should totally have an ISFL Arts & Crafts tier alongside podcasts/words/etc. Encourage people to make things.
