*Mascot March Madness - Round of 22 - Cklues - 03-24-2021

I hope you are all ready for the first round in the Mascot March Madness tournament because our competitors sure are. See the below link for explanations of the seeding and rules.

Last post

Our first matchup of this round is between the 4 seed Python and the 5 seed Liberty. This tournament is also probably the only time we will see an interleague matchup between the ISFL and DSFL, so it is sure to be exciting. This round will take place in a grassy swampland in South-East Asia, the natural environment of the Burmese python.

The python swims through the murky swamp waters, seething after being beaten in the postseason after a promising regular season. It needs need to find a place to hide and ambush its next meal. It was unsuccessful in its last attack against a coyote, so it needs the perfect spot to secure its meal before the long offseason. Head barely poking above the water, it notices a strange, stone-like structure. It is the Liberty Bell, that is sunk into the mire! This is an oddly fitting home for the Liberty after their last season. The python notices that if it can swim up into the bell, it can carve out a nice hidden ambush spot from the inside of the bell. The python is able to be underwater for up to 30 minutes so the bell being partially submerged is no problem for it. The python swims inside and curls up its long coils to wait for its next victim. The Liberty Bell is helpless to stop this, I mean, it’s a bell.

Winner: The Python!

The next matchup is between the 4 seed Hahalua and the 5 seed Hawk. This round will take place off the coast of Hawaii.

High above the pacific ocean, a hawk is circling hunting for its first win. Unable to achieve one in the regular season, it hopes to get its first in the offseason fight club. Seeing a dark shape below the water surface, it dives down to get a closer look. It is the manta ray, filter feeding near the surface! The hawk is desperate at this point in its lifetime and will pick a fight with anything so it dives down into the water (only a foot or two) and rakes its claws across the ray’s back. Surprised from actually being attacked by something, the manta ray bolts away and breaches, as they often do. Mid-jump the manta ray is hit by a passing speed boat, injuring several on board and hurting itself. Not exactly the win it was hoping for, but I’m sure the hawk would take anything at this point.

Winner: The Hawk!

The next matchup is between the 3 seed Outlaw and the 6 seed Grey Duck. This round will take place on a dusty Texan road.

A lone grey duck wanders down a Texas backroad, foraging for worms in the brush. It is startled by movement up ahead. It lifts its head and gets ready to fly away at the first sign of danger. Stepping out behind a boulder ahead, an outlaw appears, revolver at his hip. They sit, staring at each other, waiting for the other to make the first move. Suddenly the duck takes flight and attempts to flee! The outlaw whips out his revolver and takes a shot. There is a loud bang, a poof of feathers, and then silence.

Winner: The Outlaw!

The next matchup is between the 4 seed coyote and the 5 seed otter. This matchup will take place in a forest in West Virginia.

An otter hunts in a stream, catching small fish. Unaware of any danger, it casually floats down the river while occasionally giving chase to fish but mostly just enjoying the water. 20 feet above the water’s surface on a ledge, a lone coyote watches, its mouth salivating. It had just attempted to attack a birddog with its pack but was fought off in a narrow battle. Now, it is hungrily stalking its next meal, waiting for the right time to strike. The otter catches a fish and swims to the riverbank to enjoy it. It eats with its back to the coyote, who has now come down from the ledge and is sneaking up on the otter. It gets closer and closer until it steps on a twig, breaking the silence. The otter is startled and drops the fish and attempts to jump back into the stream. The coyote bites, but its jaws are mostly met with thin air. The otter leaps into the stream and swims away in a panic. The coyote attempts to follow but it is not quick enough to keep up with the fleeing otter. Discouraged, the coyote wanders off to find its next meal.

Winner: The Otter!

The next matchup is between the 4 seed birddog and the 5 seed copperhead. This matchup will take place in a grassy Ohio plain.

A springer spaniel practices its hunting skills by romping through a field and stirring up any birds nesting amongst the tall grasses. It manages to scare off a few birds and gleefully gives chase. It stops to take a drink out of a puddle from a recent rainfall and when it lifts its head back up, it is eye to eye to a glistening copperhead. It is coiled up directly in front of the spaniel, ready to strike. The spaniel, a very friendly and playful dog, treats this as a game and jumps back and forth in front of the snake and taking playful bites in the air. The copperhead strikes back at the birddog, latching onto its front leg. The spaniel yelps and tears the snake off itself. The spaniel then pounces on the snake and rips it apart. The spaniel sits, panting a moment before limping away.

Winner: The Birddog!

The last matchup of this round is between the 3 seed Luchador and the 6 seed Fire Salamander. This matchup will take place in a wrestling ring.

The luchador fixes his mask and gets ready for his next opponent. He turns around and is showered with the praise of his many fans gathered to see who he will demolish next. Much to his surprise, his next opponent turns out to be a tiny fire salamander. A small band of German fans sit behind the salamander, cheering fearlessly for their champion. They have no doubt that the fire salamander will win. The bell is rang and the two fighters head towards each other. The luchador is unsure of how to proceed at first, because normal wrestling tactics will not work against this salamander. Suddenly, he gets an idea. He climbs up onto one of the top ropes and jumps, full Randy Savage style, with a full elbow slam onto the salamander. The salamander is flattened, making the tiniest of squeaks.

Winner: The Luchador!
