S28 Charity Drive is here! - DarknessRising - 04-05-2021

WE ARE BACK WITH ANOTHER CHARITY EVENT AND IT IS MY HONOUR TO BRING IT TO YOU AND TO BE APART OF MANY SIM LEAGUES IN SPREADING POSITIVITY.

Why we’re doing this event:

A year ago our community lost a friend. Francis Gritzmacher, known to many of you as RedCydranth or Marc Spector, passed away from complications due to cystic fibrosis. While he may not have been as well known outside of the Orange County locker room in the ISFL, Francis left a positive impact on the lives of so many around him. Our community is a better place thanks to him, and he is greatly missed.

In his memory, we hope to give back to others who are struggling with cystic fibrosis. Many years ago Francis received a lung transplant in no small part through the help of The Children's Organ Transplant Association, and our goal is to help another [child or young adult] receive the same help he once did. Through COTA we hope the sim league community can help to give hope to someone struggling with this debilitating disease.

What/who is COTA:

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association provides support and fundraising assistance to families facing a life-saving transplant that they otherwise could not afford. COTA is a 501©3 nonprofit and is the largest organization dedicated solely to helping transplant families raise funds for transplant-related expenses, and providing fundraising assistance to community volunteers across the country. Since 1986, more than $110 million has been raised across the country for more than 3,400 children and young adults needing an organ, bone marrow or stem cell transplant. COTA also works with individuals of any age with single gene disorders, such as Cystic Fibrosis, Polycystic Kidney Disease and Sickle Cell Anemia.

In the last three years, more than 650 new families have benefited from COTA services. During this period, COTA has paid more than $12 million dollars to help these families with transplant expenses ranging from fuel bills to food expenses at a hospital to medical bills in the transplant unit. These figures demonstrate some of the complexities families face through a transplant experience.

This past year, COTA earned its 10th consecutive 4 star ratings from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator is a company that reviews and rates charities based on their financial health, accountability, and transparency. A 4 star rating is the highest that Charity Navigator goes, with those charities receiving at least a 90/100 in their rating system. Only 2% of all charities have this honor of receiving a 4 star rating for 10 straight years.

Their website is here: https://cota.org/

COTA Hope Fund:

The money that we raise through this charity event will go to COTA’s Hope Fund which allows them to distribute money to patients and families with the most urgent needs.

The COTA Hope Fund provides a safety net for families who are facing the financial and emotional challenges of raising a child who needs a life-saving transplant. Donating to the Hope Fund enables COTA to continue to serve every transplant family that comes to us to ensure no child is denied a second chance at life due to financial issues and continue to provide services to families at no cost.

Which leagues are involved:
Pro Baseball Experience (PBE)
Simulation Hockey League (SHL)
International Simulation Football League (ISFL)
Super Casual Football Sim League (SCFSL)
Elite Football League (EFL)
World Football Alliance (WFA)

We are extremely excited to bring this charity drive to you and to have it be a joint effort across the leagues posted above.

This event will start April 12th and last 4 weeks until May 10th, although some leagues may have different start and end dates. You can donate at any time during that period but individual leagues may run their own events with different deadlines. We will be having our own customised donation website made by the folks at COTA and we will announce when that is ready, it may be after the 12th, so please don’t donate until that is up and running.

When I first joined back in S24, everything surrounding the donation drive was insanely fun to witness and be a part of. It's a great thing all around and I'm glad to see we're doing it again!
