RE: (S28) PT 4 - Back to School - negs - 04-19-2021

Although Negs went to an extremely small highschool who was never great at football until he came along, he was excited to get the opportunity to at least coach for a game. In the pregame locker room, in order to hype up the players Negs got them chanting in the locker room. He also took advantage of this being the game against their cross town private school rivals. He told the players that all those kids wanted to do was play for a scholarship for school and not to play for each other. They did not play football for the love of the game but the recognition that comes with being a private school. This sentiment got everyone excited to go out and play. In his first game coaching, Negs led the team to a stunning 35-33 upset over their school rivals where the quarterback played the absolute game of his life just like Negs did when he was in high school. He was offered the full time job at the end of the game, but Negs still wants to play a long career in the ISFL. He told the coach that once his career was over he would happily come back and be the head coach of the football team.

This concept honestly makes so little sense for Schell. He lives in Germany most of the year, yet is asked to go back and coach in Lexington, KY. But what you're not thinking about is that Schell is a sucker for this kind of thing. Investing in the next generation. So, even though it made no sense and he got in a little trouble for taking the gig, Schell made a quick trip to Kentucky to coach his high school team against a tough regional opponent. While Schell was unable to coach the whole team effectively, he gave a speech to the linebackers in the room. "You are the quarterbacks of the defense," he was heard saying. "They may get all the glory, but for half of the game, you are in charge." His coaching led to a new found intensity on the defensive side of the ball, and while the offense was unable to gain a whole lot of traction, they did just enough to earn a victory while the defense choked the life out of the opponents. The final score was 13-6 in favor of Schell's team. When asked if he would be willing to take the job full time, Schell said, "My time in the ISFL isn't done quite yet. My best years of my career are still ahead of me. But if the spot comes up when I'm ready to hang up my cleats, give me a call."

Longtime coach Brian Brazil of the local Hebron High School has turned in his keys and embraced retirement, oddly enough in the middle of the season. He turned to one of the star players he coached years ago in Cole Maxwell, who happens to be playing professional football in Dallas, to take over for one game in the interim while a suitable and more permanent replacement is found. In his lone game as coach, Cole will be leading his hometown Hawks during Homecoming Week against the nearby Colony High School cougars. A first time coach, but longtime fan of the game, Coach Cole's approach is to implement an aggressive 5-2-4 defense aimed at generating maximum pressure in the passing game and suffocating the run game. On offense the plan is simple, hand the reigns over to the existing offensive coordinator and let him do his thing. With the excitement of having a real pro on the field as their coach and the shift in defensive philosophy, the Hawks come out hot on defense and never slow down, holding the Cougars to only ten points in the game while generating four turnovers and a defensive touchdown on their way to a solid 23-10 victory. During the post game press Coach Cole insists on giving all credit to the players and the existing staff, citing their hard work during the off-season and their commitment during the season to this point as the reason for the victory and quashing any rumors that he would be continuing in his capacity as head coach for Hebron during this time. He did leave the possibility open for a return to the Hawk's staff after his playing days were done though...

Darren Pama's old high school, San Francisco High, is unlikely to call on him. He wasn't all that big a deal while there. That being said, if he was called on, he'd call on his long history of dealing with adversity and hardship to rally the team through difficult times. That being said, there's absolutely no way he'd take a permanent job coaching, that's just not his thing. He freely admits that he would be a pretty poor coach, outside of getting people hyped for gameday, but that's the job of a team captain more than a coach. In the course of a single game, however, he would definitely come up with 3 or 4 different plays, one of which might get used in the second half and would completely exploit the defense. If, of course, the players in the game managed to pull it off. That would be the worst part of being a coach for Pama; he doesn't suffer people making mistakes well, whether it is him or someone else on the team, and he'd need to do a pretty uncharacteristic job of tamping down his anger if someone drops an easy pass or fumbles the ball away to the opposing team. He's already yelled at his kicker a couple times for missing easy field goals, that would be a pretty big issue if he did that to some people just out of middle school.

After legendary WHS head coach Jim DeSarno retires, the high school is scrambling to find someone to replace him, even temporarily. Looking at their long list of distinguished alumni, they come across Albert Ruschmann. A current ISFL star and former player for the team, he fits the bill perfectly. His first opponent is the team's long-time rival, Plainfield. They have always been the thorn in Westfield's side, with Plainfield winning 9 of the last 10 matchups between the two. Albert Ruschmann is determined to win.

The game doesn't start out as planned. Westfield's quarterback throws two ugly interceptions and the team is down 17-3 at the half. Albert Ruschmann, to get the team fired up, puts on a tape at halftime. It's his own highlight reel from when he played at the high school, including the state championship game his senior year. Inspired by Ruschmann's sheer skill on the field, the team gets inspired and vows to come back and win. And sure enough, they do. The defense held Plainfield to just 6 points in the second half, while Westfield ran in 3 scores on the ground, resulting in a 24-23 victory. The school administration offers Albert the permanent job on the spot, but he knows that he is destined for bigger things, like an Ultimus victory.
